Brit blog names iPhone 'world's worst'

In June, Apple's smartphone was the editors' choice at CNET UK. How times have changed.

CNET UK's award

Source: CNET UK

"The iPhone may be the greatest handheld surfing device ever to rock the mobile Web, and a fabulous media player to boot," writes CNET UK's Flora Graham in a mock award citation posted Tuesday. "It may be the highest-rated mobile phone on CNET UK, rocking the pockets of half of our crack editorial team. It's certainly the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. But as an actual call-making phone, it's rubbish, and we aim to prove it."

What follows is a litany of complaints no iPhone owner hasn't heard — or expressed — before. But to read them in a publication that four months earlier named Apple's (AAPL) device the "world's best touchscreen phone" is unexpected. And in Ms. Graham's voice, sort of fun.

To quote a few of her sharper lines:

  • Say what? Call quality on the iPhone is pathetic, and it's mostly because of the tiny speaker. It has to be aligned with your ear canal with the accuracy of a laser-guided ninja doing cataract surgery, or else the volume cuts down to nothing as the sound waves bounce uselessly around your ear shells.
  • Dropped calls and data gaps. If, like Will Smith in Enemy of the State, you're trying to avoid the eagle eye of Big Brother, the iPhone could be for you. It drops calls, fails to connect and doesn't even ring sometimes — not for everyone, but more often than any other phone we're currently using.
  • You can't answer if it doesn't ring. Perhaps the worst of the iPhone's problems is its ability to sit there stealthily and ignore incoming calls. With no ring or vibrate to clue you in, your friends and family are redirected to voicemail… or just treated to silence. If you're in a two-iPhone family, it can be a case of the deaf leading the mute.
  • The iPhone might burn your face off. According to our ultra-sciencey test, it is extremely unlikely that the iPhone will burn your face off… Nevertheless, pressing a large, flat surface to your cheek is always going to be sweaty…  Thus the current trend for people to walk down the street with their phones on hands-free, yelling into the mike at the bottom while they hold the rest of the phone away from their faces.
  • iPhone battery life. A couple of hours of Google Maps over 3G and you'll be lost in the woods without even the possibility of phoning for help. Compare that to the good old days when your phone would last a week without charging, and you'll wonder why you ever bothered to switch.
  • The iPhone sucks — so what? If the iPhone is inaudible, unconnected, on fire and out of battery, why is the thing so popular? The fact is, although the iPhone is the worst phone in the world, it's the best handheld computer there is.

At least until CNET UK's editors name a new one.

What nonsense. You can tell especially with the over the top BS about heat / burning your face! The majority of responders to this CNET blog posting (it was not a review) stated clearly that the majority of the problems are with the carrier (sound familiar?) which has experienced an 18X (that's 1,800 % ) increase in 3G traffic in the last year due mostly to the popularity and high usage rate of the iPhone. In reality, the UK CNET full iPhone reviews stated as follows:

iPhone 3G (2008) – "greatly improved call quality" and total rating 8.9 out of 10

iPhone 3Gs launched this summer, 9.3 out of 10.

Some friends have stated these concerns as well; however, my iPhone is my one and only phone and I have not encountered any of these issues! I've had a couple (rare) of dropped calls, but nothing more than I've had with other phones or carriers.
Battery life could be an issue, but not that big of one since I've always carried a charger with me (and the usb connection makes it a lot more universal). Also, in my opinion, folks are expecting too much for what all the crap they load on their phones. Battery life varies upon applications in use and I have not yet read a review that mentions this or compares smartphones using the same apps. Also, I've observed a lot of people don't realize that many of the apps they add are "always on", so changing that setting is hugely beneficial; just like turning off the lights when you leave a room. So ultimately, as with an most reviews, this is just one person's opinion; treat it as such.

I think the iPhone rocks. I do have problems texting tho and cracked up over ZJ's comment! While the texting is far more cumbersome than it should be, the phone overall is amazing!

Personally, I've not had issues with the reception, sound or heat. The O/S works and I've had Motorola and Samsung in the past. Motorola phone did burn my ear and Samsung MS O/S crashed a number of times leaving me unable to communicate until reloading the O/S which was frustrating. Granted there are always new phones available on the market hoping to compete and beat out the competition and personally I've had phenomenal success. As always a review is an opinion based on what the vendor experience is and perhaps promotion of products based on specific demographic.

JIM, Denton, Texas is an idiot. Everybody is entitled to a thought without being labeled by a myopic, follower. Whenever anyone calls anything the best they are prejudiced. You have not seen or tried ALL the phones out there and everyday there are new one popping up. So not so quick to judge and call names, simply because your experiences are not shared by everyone. Quit blowing your iphone, it really is not the best phone, but rather as was already said the best hand held computer.

The statement "IPhone "World's Worst"" does not make sense.

I would like to see Flora Graham's credentials because it sounds to me she does not know what she is talking about.

IPhone is the most popular phone in the modern world. If the IPhone had that many issues, then why is it that people continue to purchase it?

Don't say it is because of a hype! Many movies are marketed, and hyped up, and shortly have opening, it is rated, and then everyone waits for the DVD to hit the rental store.

Don't say it is because people are dumb, and don't know what they want. People make sure the IPhone is what they want prior to spending all that money to purchase it.

So the IPhone's battery life does not last? Well, that is probably because people can't stop using this devise because it is so useful.

I think that Flora Graham deserves an Award.

This article is hilarious! Mostly because it is so accurate. I was actually reduced to tears reading the line about the iPhone sitting there stealthily ignoring incoming calls! Someone commented on that it is AT&T, but if you call AT&T (which I have had to do on many, many occasions) they say that each phone is made differently and that the phone is the problem, not their service. I do love the Verizon commercial with the maps because I too agree that the AT&T map provided there is far more accurate than the one AT&T itself provides. I knew about the battery life before buying the phone. What I was unaware of was the near complete lack of service. There are periods of time (days strung together) where I have all my antenna bars, but cannot make or receive calls, cannot access e-mail or the internet. Phone seems to be "searching" frequently, or just flat out says "no service." Keep in mind I am typically right in the middle of a large downtown city where service should be great.
I also agree with the speaker comment, and even worse than having the phone directly to your ear is the speaker phone function. Next to no volume on that!
I am very disappointed in the iPhone as a whole. I waited specifically until the 3Gs came out to get the phone, now I am stuck with it, or stuck paying to get out of the contract.

This lady must have been dropped on her head at a very early age. First, a phone dropping calls and not receiving calls isn't the phone. It is the carrier. How can you blame the phone for that. The same goes for data gaps. This isn't the phone. This is the carrier. The author of the blog lives in the UK and I am not sure of the carrier for iPhone there, but here it is AT&T. They flat out suck. The new Verizon commercial disparaging the 3G coverage of AT&T is dead on. This is something AT&T needs to fix, but that isn't the iPhone's fault.

The lady must be deaf to not hear the phone because I have never heard of this. We have two iPhones and I know about 10 people that have them and none have experienced this issue. I think, M'AM, it might be time to get your hearing checked.

Burn your face off? HUH? Pretty much every smart phone on the planet is flat. They all share this issue. If you don't like this feature, BUY A BLUETOOTH HEADSET, moron.

The battery part is misleading. Yes, if you use the iPhone for a handheld computer it sucks. However, the whole article is talking about how iPhone sucks as a phone. It admits it is a great handheld computer. If you shut off all the computer features and never use any data items, and use it as a phone only, the battery life is average. It is when you use the computer features the battery life sucks. So isn't this a knock on the computer feature and not the phone feature? It is easy to ovvercome the battery issue. I have a charger at work, in my car, at home and in my briefcase. I never have to worry about battery life because I can charge it wherever I am.

My suspiciions are raised on this article. It makes me think this woman is a shill fir RIM or some other competitor.

Lol. Mocking the iPhone on the Internet is the equivalent of mocking Jesus in a crowded church. If I were you I'd go into hiding immediately.

First of all a few years back, when we didn't even have a iphone, PEOPLE STARTED COMPLAINING ABOUT THE LACK OF FEATURES ON THEIR PHONES. now that we have such a phone with so many features, WHY ARE U COMPLAINING. IF U DONT LIKE AN IPHONE DONT BUY IT

Posted By GKB, Cupertino CA: November 5, 2009 8:43 PM

Couldn't get an incoming call for almost a day because of the Problem no 3. I usually get irritated with 5 (worst battery ever), 4 (sweat), 1 (no volume in conference calls). I faced few other problems like apps close itself instantly , and phone switches off on its own. Even though iphone is the best invention, these problems need fix to become best from being worst.

Posted By sam, San jose, CA: November 5, 2009 5:46 PM

I'm sorry author, whoever you are, but you are an idiot. It is the best phone on the market, can you get any other phone that works like it and works as well as it? NO!! Can you find any other phone that is nearly as simple and easy to use? NO!! You are over exaggerating the downsides that only a few experience. It's so popular because it is the best phone on the market!

the touchscreen face that launched a thousand apps. . . that is possibly the greatest reference I have ever read in something as mundane as a cell phone review

I love my iPhone. Yes, the product is reaching maturity. Yes, battery life is an issue. So? There are so many great features that make this device great.

Posted By Ben, Dallas TX: November 5, 2009 12:58 PM

Why does everyone try to blame AT&T for the crappy reception on the iPhone? I have a Blackberry Bold on AT&T and maybe 1 out of 50 calls drop. I also support about 150 AT&T BBs in NYC and LA that nobody complains about, but guess what phones we get lots of service complaints about? Yup, the iPhone.
Did it dawn on anyone that the antenna sucks?

Posted By JD NYC, NY: November 5, 2009 1:00 PM

I read that review earlier this week and really can't understand 90% of the issues raised.

The only point made that I found correct is the battery life issue which I knew about before buying it and I'm perfectly fine dealing with it.

Posted By Chris – Nottingham, England: November 5, 2009 12:35 PM

This guy was really angry at this phone when he wrote the interview… I've never had any of these problems myself, but there is always a defective device in a bunch, nothing is perfect. This review totally blew out of proportion minor glitches and problems that the carrier is at fault and not the unit itself.

ex ped: Flora Graham, who wrote that CNET story, is a woman I believe. As it happens, she also wrote the June 19 review that called the iPhone 3GS the "world's best touchscreen phone." Go figure.

Posted By Jaime, San Juan, PR: November 5, 2009 12:20 PM

I don't understand the people that are complaining about CNET reporting their findings. Should they ignore what they've found? CNET is a resource people go to, to find relevant information on technology. You say, if you don't like it, don't buy it. I say, if you don't like what you hear then stop listening and complaining about a report that most people find valuable. I want to get an iPhone but I'm not going to until I stop hearing about these ongoing problems.

Perhaps we've all been too easily distracted by shiny things ever since we were helpless little babies in the crib.

Even as we grow up, perhaps some of us still too easily impressed by designer-labels on overpriced designer versions of products that are available more cheaply elsewhere.

Posted By Tim Acheson, London, UK: November 5, 2009 11:52 AM

I don't own an iphone and probably never will… But do have extensive experience with it as most of my friends and colleges own it and I am definitely affected by it's wrath. With that disclaimer out of the way I have to say that many of the problems are not really with the phone itself but with the service provider that apple has blundered into giving it to.. thus making this article a bit misguided. In the states it is contractually bound to at&t. This is by far the worst service provider hands down. Dropped calls, data gaps, and not ringing are all related to the service provider and are undoubtedly the worst part of owning the phone… so to say the phone is the worst phone ever is just flat out wrong. For apple to link it to the worst networks makes it in the most simplest terms the most deceptive/frustrating phone to own… but not the worst phone.

Posted By Anonymous: November 5, 2009 11:43 AM

Ditto. They're trolling for page views because nobody would give a crap about CNet.

Posted By J Davis: November 5, 2009 11:39 AM

You sir, seem to have a defective unit!

I had none of thoses problem after 1 and half year.

sound like a iphone hater because it had to be Apple to come up with such a great device!

Nothing's perfect, but this thing is near close, so unless you got REAL facts, it will always be the perfect phone for me. I just wish everyone had one, the world be a better place if so.

Posted By Bojean, Quebec, Canada: November 5, 2009 11:37 AM

I don't know about the uk but the iPhone literally is the greatest phone ever made. The only thing I agree with (other than it being the best handheld computer) is that the battery life does suck. But considering all it's really doing and the size I'm pretty amazed it lasts 8-12 hours a day. And honestly you can't blame the dropped calls or no calls on the iPhone, that's the carriers problem. I wish the iPhone was on verizon, if it was everyone would have an iPhone under the age of 35.

Posted By Bejan: November 5, 2009 11:11 AM

It cracks me up how everyone wants to bash the Iphone. I know that it's not the Jesus phone everyone things it is. But the simple fact remains that it's as close to being the perfect phone than anything that's out right now. No device is perfect, but the Iphone changed the game. If you don't like it then don't buy it, simple as that. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean that everyone wants to hear your complaints about it. Let's move on people. It's a phone, nothing more, nothing less.

Posted By Steven Terry, Louisville, KY: November 5, 2009 10:54 AM

It's funny how people are commenting on the iPhone. It's a 2 year old device and its only now other Phones have clocked on, only goes to show how good it really is. What did samsung, nokia, blackberry have in 2007 to even compare (HTC aside)? its only now that they have brought out compareable phones. Pathetic really.

They might as well call it the iGame or iTouch, because as a phone it is horribly crappy. The iPhone is definitely geared towards gaming, mp3, and not much else. As phones go, its probably about as bad as it gets. Yet another reason its not used in the business world (just like Apple's computers, but thats another story for another day!)

Posted By Steve, Sacramento CA: November 4, 2009 11:54 PM

Hack journalism at its worst. (Not you, PED. You're OK) About what i would expect from a Brit.

The most pathetic thing is that had she known even the tiniest little bit about the iPhone Developer environment, she could have written a REAL article about what sucks in the State of Apple. And what will suck in times to come…

Here is a hint: Pretend you are a developer and you want to make use of the iphone's "fantastic" ability to plug into third party hardware via the connection port.

OK, now go find out what is involved in learning how to get that job done. Call out BINGO! when you find yourself in a crazy situation where Apple nazi's are acting like CIA operatives, and asking you really, really weird and invasive questions about every aspect of your business, your finances, your aims and your known associates.

Anyway, I have a question for the PC children on this thread: I come read this blog because I like Apple products (sometimes) and I work with them.

Why on earth do people who hate Apple products come to comment on a blog about Apple?

Epic failure of the human being, PC folks who come here to sneer. Your parents hate you.

Posted By cynik, Switzerland: November 4, 2009 10:41 PM

I don't understand why anyone would want their phone to do all this. Why not get the far superior iPod Touch and a regular phone or smart phone.

Using a touchscreen phone to text or constantly smudging the screen against your face means your more likely to scratch or otherwise damage the device when you try to clean it.

Besides the keyboards on slidephones and smartphones are far more responsive and useful for texting.

Having two devices for entertainment and communications is not exactly a hardship in a world where most people have more than one pocket.

Best of all, if you get an iPod Touch, PSP or whatever for video and games you don't need to tie yourself to AT&T for the rest of your natural born life to make it an affordable purchase.

The iPhone is like a fashion accessory! I'm surprised more people don't wear it around their necks. If you want reliable smart phone get a BlackBerry! Sure it doesn't have as many apps as the iPhone but ask yourself "Do I really need a phone that plays pinball!!!"

Posted By Dean, Montreal,QC: November 4, 2009 10:28 AM

Flora Graham's comments are the exact opposite of my experience with the exception of web surfing, which is spot on.

I hardly ever get dropped calls. The frequency is no better or worse than what it was when I was with Sprint. In fact, my reception is actually better with AT&T where I currently live because AT&T's network is better here than Sprints.

I do still get dead zones in places; that is true of any cell phone. It depends a lot on whose network you are on.

I have no trouble hearing my caller, and I don't have to speak any louder than I do with any other cell phone I've used.

I only miss calls if I have it on vibrate–it doesn't vibrate hard enough for me to feel it or hear it, but since I don't care if calls go to voicemail it doesn't really affect me.

It never gets hot. The battery is no better or worse than other cells phones I've had. It depends a lot of how much I use the device. If I'm not using the 3G network much, it'll last me a week. If I do a lot of surfing, or am making lots of calls, it lasts about a day.

I love how the address book works; very easy. I love iCal and the fact I can sync it with both my Mac and my PC. I have loads of medical apps that I use daily in my job.

It's the best tool I've ever owned.

The iPhone is nowhere near the "greatest web surfing handheld device there is"… It doesn't come close to many other phones. People seem to think the iPhone was the first ever touch screen phone or the first ever of its kind, which isn't the case. It was the first phone to offer the ability to add applications of your choosing, but beyond that, it really wasn't and isn't anything special. The one thing I like about the iPhone is the brilliant display… other than that, I'm not impressed. I've owned 3 HTC phones in the last two years that perform far better on every single level than my friend's iPhone. The iPhone is too large, doesn't offer complete user customization controls that one would expect, and doesn't allow you to see which programs are currently running, how much operating system memory is in use, etc. If you're going to buy a phone like that, why wouldn't you go for a pocket pc phone? They offer far more than the iPhone ever will.

I haven't experience anything this article claims, or at least not inordinately. Dropped calls and calls that go straight to voicemail I have also experienced with my Windows Mobile phone before this. So where these perceived problems may be legit, I would suspect it has more to do with the provider than the phone itself. This article is unduly harsh on what I consider the best smartphone ever made. And I have experienced quite a few.

Posted By David Berry, Chicago, IL: November 3, 2009 6:38 PM

look folks, just because it doesn't happen to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I live in an area where my phone will not connect frequently, go from 5 bars to call drop in an instant, and have my voicemail light up when the phone doesn't ring. And I live in one of the tech centers of the country and the home of the first 4G network rollout by Sprint (Research Triangle Park, NC).

It doesn't mean i don't love the device. I do. But it's pretty average as a phone. It blows me away that any criticism of Apple releases such vitriol. If it has always been so perfect, how is it possible for Apple to keep making it better (followed by the sound of many folks here racing to their keyboards to state how unbelievable Apple is for improving the device).

The progression of the iPhone is iterative. The thing ain't perfect, it will improve, but for goodness sakes stop slaughtering people who point out facts and obvious issues.

Posted By Alechemist, Chapel Hill, NC: November 3, 2009 6:13 PM

Philip Elmer-DeWitt, Microsoft troll extraordinare.

Try using the iPhone with the 3 way earbuds. They hear you, you hear them, its hands free driving (like many states requrie) and when your calls over, its right back to music galore.

PS, I am sure that every other smart phone out there is so really great, especially if it runs Windows Mobile 7…… er its not out for a year, maybe Windows mobile 6.5, even thought everyone says it sucks.

PS, battery units that act as a case are already out there and work great.

Tell Steve Ballmer that he needs to pay you more money.

Just a thought.

I totally agree with this article. I come from a family of Apple devotees…. having owned nearly every Apple product ever – including the Newton. I love yet hate the iphone. I am actually considering buying ANOTHER phone a year before my contract is up because 40% of my calls drop, and countless times my phone just freezes up, doesn't answer a call, etc. I would be more amenable to these problems if Apple/AT&T didn't lock me into a 2 year contract. 2 years of service where i barely come close to using my minutes because I rarely make calls.. because its so dang frustrating.

I'm in St. Louis MO USA and much of what the British writer says is true for me! I have several times per week experienced the phantom call problem: calls that never ring yet I have 5 bars and have not moved in several hours. The battery life sucks. I charge overnight and it barely makes it through the day with minimal surfing and just a few calls.

But have you every used a Windows Mobile phone? They suck WORSE!

Really poor tech journalism from a Dorothy Parker wanna-be. Any device that you want to use and do use fully will be criticized for short battery life. Heavy use and running out of battery just go together. As a user of the original and now 3GS iPhone, I have seen more dropped calls, but the 3GS works well in more places and is no bigger than the flip part of my original analog Motorola Flip Phone. This idiot has no perspective as well as few measurable facts to write from.

Pretty pathetic that Philip Elmer-DimWitt's blog has reached such low traffic levels that a fine tech "journalist" like him has to resort to trolling for hits with garbage like this.

Sad.

I have to agree that this is a stupid article. It's your basic hack job, and could have been written by any number of Apple haters that've been posting of late. No news, and not amusing.

Huh. Sort of like Fox News….

I've owned lots of different model cell phones include several Motorola Razors, wiith the iPhone having the best audio quality of the bunch. I also use it in frig areas with much better results than other cell phones I've owned including the Motorla Razor. I've owned an IPhone for almost 2 years, an have not had the drop call isuue claimed in this article. I personally think this article is rubbish. I love my IPhone, and my friends who have iPhone have told me they love theirs too. If you don't have an iPhone, get one. You will wonder how you ever got by without it.

Composed on my iPhone.

I really don´t agree at all. Ok the battery life time sucks but that is all

Really silly review. I've been using the iPhone for over one year and have yet to experience most of the issues mentioned. I have has some dropped calls but those are when I pass through the dead zone on the country backroads around here

Well, I don't think Apple cares much about this review. And consumers obviously don't either. The iPhone is a phenomenon, not a phone. It will undoubtedly continue to sell and outperform all competition… Did the editor of this blog just type this in an effort to garner attention? I think so. Oh btw, I typed this on my iPhone, in record time. Because of the great keyboard. And awsome screen. And superior touch screen. And great 3G connectivity….

who did M$ bribe this time?

Who paid her to damage Apple reputation and do damage to Apple share price? This is slander in the first degree. This isn't beneath Apple competitors.

To summarize this article: buy an iPod touch and just use a regular cell-phone (not a smart phone). Sounds like decent advice to me.

could you please name a cellphone which isn't flat????

As a Windows user and former SonyEricsson and HTC user, I have to say I am thrilled. My iPhone works perfect and I have no trouble with it what so ever.

Posted By Mike: November 3, 2009 10:32 AM

Are you kidding? The Iphone is awesome. I have very rarely dropped a call and I was with Verizon which has great service prior to getting the iphone. I switched from the Blackberry to the Iphone and I love it. I couldn't be happier. My blackberry use to freeze up often and i would have to reset it. The calls worked well all over the country as I travel for business. But I have to say since switching to the iphone I am thrilled. Faster internet, email is great. More applications to choose from and its like having a mini computer in your hand on the go. To the writer of this article, I think perhaps you need to reconsider your comments.

Link bait, pure and simple.

Posted By Frank, Parker, CO: November 3, 2009 10:01 AM

All basically BS. Look I carry both the Blackberry and the IPhone and so do a few of my friends one most notably who is a pilot and travels internationally on a weekly basis and I can tell you without reservation that we both rely on our phones. We cannot notice any difference. But, my face wasn't such a winner to begin with so I really don't miss it all that much. Perhaps Doctors Without Borders will help me out. (DWOB is a great organization and certainly worthy of any charitable giving.)

those analysts must live underground because thats the only place i have trouble using the iphone. after all it's a cell phone and none are near perfect!

Posted By RV in Detroit, mi.: November 3, 2009 9:25 AM

totally agree, more uncompleted calls and voice messages than ever! phone doesn't ring half the time and drops calls regularly.

Posted By larry houston texas: November 3, 2009 9:22 AM

Yet another click whore puffing up traffic from saying something bad about Apple.

Pavlov would be so proud.

Posted By TimboM, Madison, WI: November 3, 2009 9:21 AM

The writer does make it clear that the iPhone is only ment to be obtained by intelligent people that can hold a phone to their ear, can find the sound adjustment switch, and don't plan on accidently jumping out of a plan into the middle of the amazon.
This is obsured, when any one knows of a phone that is drop call resistant, please fill us in.

I agree. For me, the iPhone has been an incredible phone experience (much better than my previous AT&T phone), that just happens to be the most awesome handheld computing experience, ever. I'm not sure what phone the author is reviewing, but it's not the iPhone I use. Then again, I live in the wilds of Idaho.

Posted By SCAScot: November 3, 2009 9:12 AM

had my iPhone over a year and I have never had a problem except the five minutes I ran 2.0 out of the box. considering most normal users don't use many phones to review like cnet they won't notice a difference. My iPhone is certainly
better than the crappy Sony erricson I had before. sure I understand the battery concerns. My one year old battery is terrible. Won't even last a day. Although normal use for me
is pretty much all time so that is to be expected. I'm no apple fanboi I can recognise that the iPhone isn't perfect and it isn't. still better for me though than the competition. Thanks

True! The worst connections ever- and the worst network ever… at least in the US. Great email device, tho.

I own an iPhone, live in northern Virginia, and the phone Ms. Graham describes is completely unfamiliar to me—except for the part about the iPhone being the best handheld computer there is. The iPhone as a phone works perfectly for me.

i own an iphone and unfortunately i totally agree with writer. terrible phone. good handheld device. have to conserve battery at all costs. thx
