Steve Jobs is $300 million richer
His net worth shot up to $5.4 billion Wednesday, only partly thanks to Apple
In September, Steve Jobs' $5.1 billion earned him the No. 43 spot on Forbes' list of the 400 richest Americans. Since then, Apple's shares have rocketed to a new all-time high, closing Wednesday at $204.92.
So Jobs was a lot richer Wednesday than he was in September — $300 million richer, at least on paper — but only 3/5 that increase is thanks to Apple (AAPL). The rest is Disney's (DIS) doing.
[Jobs was even richer before the market gave up most of its gains in the last hour of trading. See below.]
According to the two companies' proxy statements, the bulk of Jobs' net worth is in the form of preferentially owned stock:
- 5.426 million shares of Apple (most of it from a 2003 grant of 10 million shares, later reduced to pay taxes)
- 138 million shares of Disney (from when Disney acquired Pixar)
In the six weeks since Forbes took its financial snapshot, Apple has gained 32.42 points (as of Wednesday's close) while Disney inched up 87 cents. But because Jobs' net worth is so much more closely tied to Disney than to Apple, those 87 cents carry a lot of weight in his portfolio. Bottom line: by Wednesday night, Jobs' holdings had increased in value …
- from Apple:Â Â $180 milion
- from Disney: $120 million
- total:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â $300 million
Shortly after 2 p.m., before the market tanked, Apple was up 9.71 points to an all-time intraday high of 208.62, and Disney was up .36 points to $29.71, together adding $103.5 million to Jobs' bottom line.
Apple closed the day at $204.92, up 6.16 points. Disney closed at $29.23, down 12 cents.

I would like to know why our soldiers that fight an die for this country don't get paid like that? I uess since they didn't make your listening and talking more enjoyable then they don't deserve it. Oh wait, they did indeed, by giving you a country that is free to "roam". It sounds to me like alot of people are just jealous. Its that simple. Colleges open their doors everyday so you can have the chance to advance. I myself am happy that I am a middle-class American. While Steve is doing photoshoots and interviews I am doing something that really matters, spending time with my kids. It may not be on a yacht in the Carribean but my backyard is just as good to us. Cherish what you have and strive to get more if you choose but don't blame this man's fortunes on your unfortunates. Everyone have a great day and don't forget to hug your kids when you get home.
Why are so many of you worried about Steve Jobs and his money? The real question is what have YOU done today to help the poor in this world?
This just isn't right. That money should given to the taxpayers of this country. No one person should see his wealth increase by that much. It needs to be given back to the country's citizens.
great for him, hope he can used it where is going. Tesla developed these wireless system in the lates 1897, so over 100 years ago, Tesla was killed in order to get his inventions to others people names……THE AIM OF THE DEVIL

ex ped: That's the most bizarre comment I've read all week.
As the World Fortune Owner and Court Precedented "Intelligent Designer", I personally know that steve jobs personal stock holdings only amount to $334,454.34 and that's all. I thought the New York Attorney General's Lawsuit against Moody's and the S&P put an end to all that "false reporting"! Corporate Credit Purchases of Stocks with my World Fortune Government owned Coporations and Businesses is "my money" get real!
I am happy for Mr. Jobs for his wealth and his health. I am curious about one thing though. Why couldn't those beautiful Iphones have come with shatterproof glass? My daughter has her phone 3 months and one mishap has shattered the glass so bad she can hardly read it and to repair it is a small fortune for these kids.
Wow, those are a lot of digits in "net worth" but only if he "cashed out". I'm sure Apple pays its employees pretty good too but wonder if they get any yearly bonus to share in the success ? Today, the stock market is a daily yo-yo contest and the majority of Americans don't have the investment portfolio Jobs has. So the new People's Financial Stimulus Plan is tarting for the rest of America's citizens, especially in response to the government's bailout of major faltering businesses (at the taxpayers' expense). All who participate will benefit nicely too. It's on a private website. We need to united and make America strong again – and the sooner the better ! Frank, Cheywy2007@aol.com
I don't think the US government (we the people) bailed out Steve Jobs so why should we the people have any say in what Steve Jobs makes?
There are some typical "Ugly American" comments on this website. Literally idolizing some "SLOB" who has made millions of dollars doing nothing, probably illegally, paying NO taxes. I guuess like that "PIG" in Washington State!!!
Jobs is rewarded by hard work, creativity and innovation–the things that I wish I had done in my life. Unfortunately the comments I have read ignore the single most salient item regarding the loss of jobs in our country: that is most, if not all, of job loss results from implementation of new technology that REDUCES manpower needs and keep companies afloat! So where do we go from here? How about creating and producing the new technology—hmmm. think about it.
Amazing – all the liberals voicing support for Steve Jobs' earnings & in their next breath, condemning those 'evil Wall Street fat cats' & calling for Obama to fix their wages. You can't have it both ways – if the Wall Street fat cats are bad, then Steve Jobs is bad.
HUUUUGE LMAOs @ john in KY…..
only an imbecile with SEVERE mental, emotional and self-esteem issues would WANT more respect????
this country is pitiful in its ability to warp the minds of humans…
since when is being respected ANY sign of value in life?
since when it is any sign of intelligence?
since when is it prove ANY ability, skills or knowledge???
the answer…..NEVER!
respect is for those that NEED it….
you know the ones i'm talking about…
self-centered, always talking like they know it all, always demanding people 'respect' them…
i can go on naming the loser types that fall into the 'need/want' respect catagory but my life is too full of the good things that matter to waste anymore time on the subject!
you iTards that need, demand, want or require respect are just that…..iTARDS!
get over it…..any respect you think people have for you will DIE with you so it really means nothing in this universe of life!
perhaps if you focused more on just being a good person, helping others and not trying to RAPE resources from others to line your pockets….then you may know how little respect means and how ONLY the biggest losers live with morals that revolve around respect you want, need or have!!!
Profit is largely dependent on increasing the productivity of capital. Labor is capital, and much of the increase in profits is from working people harder, for more hour and lesss money. Unless this increase in profit is shared with the workers, they will no longer have the money to buy the products they produce. We have seen this take place under the "trickle down" theory. Of course by cutting the taxes if corporations, they have been encouraged to keep that money rather than invest in their human capital. When this occurs, the whole thing comes to a halt. Capital hoarded by corporations, banks, the uber wealthy and such does not lead to economic growth. It leads to economic stangulation .
"Everyone on this forum have spoken freely with different points of view. We all share one thing. Wanting some of that pie or wanting more respect."
This is exactly where you, and all the other socialists out there, don't get it. Steve Jobs didn't "want some of that pie." He made the pie. And, he didn't "want more respect." He did a lot of things that people respect.
Seriously JD Decatur from IL? If the iPhone and iPods were made in the US, they would cost 4 times as much!
People moan about jobs going overseas but still want a big screen for $199!
"Has anyone worked as a slave lately. Well for all those who purchased an iPhone from an Apple Store only saw one thing. Great Customer Service. What you did not see was the suffering we go through. Our customers are the best and worst. We are treated as slaves to a company that hords 30 billion in the bank. Some of us don't get a lunch or a break. After 5 hours of abuse from customers you can really loose your mind. Then you put up with disrespectful supervisors. All along hoping a customer dosen't piss you off enough that you react inappropriately and end up being fired. Has anyone any dignity. Steve has a great team, but we are bringing him the bacon and hoping that we are not frying in the pan. As for 35000 employees don't forget the thousands that were fired over the years by Apple."
"Yeah for you bottom of the barrel retail employees. Maybe if you were an engineer you'd get more the pie. LOL. You = FAIL!'
I don't think you would be saying that if you worked at an Apple Store. I have more than 35 friends working at over 15 stores and they repeat the same sentiment. We all know retail is hard and some make a choice to do that while others have no choice because of the limited employment prospects in our country. What we should remember is everyone deserves to be on fair playing field. From a company that not only makes good products, but also cares for those who help sell, manufacture, develop and using them. So many of my friends can't leave because health concerns and financial reasons. Some own homes. If they lost their jobs we would have more people who will foreclose or file. Let's look at the bigger picture. Everyone on this forum have spoken freely with different points of view. We all share one thing. Wanting some of that pie or wanting more respect.
So many haters want a piece of the pie. Knock a man for doing well in this world. It goes for anyone who actually makes it to be successful. Why don't 90% of the people who posted go an actually do something with their life instead of settling for "mediocre" and saying it's not fair he has so much money. I'm sure if you spent the time you spend complaining and put that effort towards your daily life you would be in a much better situation.
Hey way to go Steve, think about all of the American jobs created manufacturing all of those iPhones and iPods, oh wait a minute, those aren't made in the USA, sorry, my bad
Steve earned that $300 Million the old-fashioned way… He EARNED it!!! Love for Apple every time my iPhone completes a call. AT&T? We need to do some serious 'quality time' in the nearest woodshed.
Way to go, Apple, Inc.
Te 'Conservatives' p*ss and moan about high taxes on the uber-rich. Here is Steve Jobs, putting out a good product that middle-income, middle class families can use and make a sh*tload of ca$h. Am I offended? Are you kidding me? What have you got for us next, Steve? I'm paying ca$h next time!!!!!
Has anyone worked as a slave lately. Well for all those who purchased an iPhone from an Apple Store only saw one thing. Great Customer Service. What you did not see was the suffering we go through. Yeah for you bottom of the barrel retail employees. Maybe if you were an engineer you'd get more the pie. LOL. You = FAIL!
Jobs, like every other American has the right to do, makes gaggles of money off of investing AND working. Why can't people get that through their thick skulls? The Neanderthal below who says he worked at Apple for 19 years (forgot to tell Steve thanks for paying his bills for that long, ungrateful prick) can only point out that he is a total loser and didn't cash in on buying company stock (like everybody else who retired by now fabulously wealthy). When will people wake up and take responsibility for their own actions? Huh, you think jackasses that say things like "It depends on what your definition of is is" are going to lead us out of this? Not unless they support euthanasia for dumbasses.
He is like the Michael Jordan of tech. Revolutionized the industry & made a ton of money, yet it almost feels like he is underpaid…
Het Brian from Kalamazoo – You must bee too young to remember the economics of the late 70's. Unemployment in the mid 70's, followed by price controls, gas lines, then double digit inflation and interest rates.
It is not uncommon for innovators to arise from opportunities arising from recessions and tough economic times. Just one of the silver linings of recessions. That is, unless the federal government gets in the way.
Surprising to hear that less than 20% of his wealth is in Apple and that more than 80% is in Disney. Why did he divest of Apple shares?
ex ped: He didn't divest his Apple shares. He used a portion to pay the federal taxes on the 10 million options he was granted, but without actually selling them. He owns a lot of Disney shares — 7.4% of the company — because that's what he got when they bought Pixar from him.
I see a lot of Angry people here.. Steve Jobs is a business person, inventor and innovator. Bottom line is he makes great products from great ideas. He makes money for his shareholders as well. Way to go Steve…
Great job Steve Jobs! I only wish I could be as successful as you. Truly a remarkable CEO and it will hard to replace him.
I find the conservative arguments here silly.
Steve Jobs created Apple and the Personal Computer industry when the top marginal tax rate was 65%. And introduced the MacIntosh Computer along with the Graphical User Interface when the top marginal tax rate was 50%.
High taxes did not stop Steve Jobs efforts or his innovativeness.
Low tax rates have only brought avarice and high unemployment.
He deserves it. His insight, work ethic and drive have lead him to change the world. Look here, for those green with envy. Wait until the iTablet comes up and replaces text books at Universities. Students will loan eBooks on iTablets and come to class – see here: http://www.rorylewis.com/docs/02iPhone/10_iTablet/10_iTablet.htm

Now Jobs can buy a few of those slaves he supports to harvest his new organs from. YAY for this brainwasher, child labor supporter.
And dont hack your iPhones, or your going to jail. They are arresting people quietly who are doing this for others. Same with xbox modding. THEY ARE ARRESTING PEOPLE FOR THIS…NOT FOR BOOTLEGGING…LOOK IT UP
See capitalism is based on free market. Steve did something that created value in the real world. People voluntarily trade their money for something that he delivers. This is the basis for a successful society. I know all you 1/2 wits out there think that people who are ignorant and uneducated should get a bone tossed to them…however, our society breeds stupidity. If you do nothing extraordinary, you should get nothing but a life that is commensurate with your efforts.
Unless of course, all you folks like your tax money going to welfare for people to have babies and sit on their butt.
Steve Jobs is a world class A**hole, and a very greedy one at that. Unlike Bill Gates or Warren Buffet, who've both shown they possess an altruistic and philanthropic attitude regarding their immense fortunes….Jobs has never shown the same attitude. Indeed, for many years he refused to even acknowledge his daughter, born out of wedlock, and did next to nothing to help the mother and daughter financially. I worked for Apple Computer from 1983 to 2002, and I can recall many instances where Steve Jobs took total credit for the ideas of others, brilliant and hard working individuals who were eventually forced out of Apple, by Steve Jobs, I suspect because of guilt on his part. So when I read the laudatory and glowing comments left here by people who only admire Jobs because they own Apple stock and are happy with the profits they've made….they obviously don't know the real Steve Jobs, for if they did, they would be as dissappointed in him as a human being as I became after years of knowing the man.
I think you guys are all idiots. You can write about starvation all day, you do understand why starvation exists in the first place? because people spend their time writing about it, instead of doing something about it.
its time people stopped being keyboard warriors, and just did something.
ps, money doesn't solve problems, people do.

I suspect ninety-nine percent of those people posting negative remarks about Mr. Jobs fortune don't have two nickels to rub together and are just plain green with envy and consumed by jealousy. Steve Jobs is a brilliant man with many accomplishments that have benefited humanity. I, for one, congratulate and applaud him on his many achievements. His naysayers, on the other hand, should concentrate on acquiring a couple of nickels.
Nobody can argue with the reality that Apple is a successful company–largely on the back of ipod product success. The issue I have with Apple and many other companies is that the ground upon which these companies lie on is so fragile that big swings in their stock price are clear red flags that you don't want to be hit hard in your retirement vehicles. Big risk–big reward (or failure) when you play the game. I don't like apple's products and never owned any (they lost my perspective interest in the mid 1980's). Apple's success with the ipod hysteria is a prime example of how easily the consumer & public are manipulated/swayed into being loyal customers at boutique prices. It shows a dark conformist side of capitalism. Maybe you can't compare it with the damage done by banks, oil companies, the auto industry, or even telecom– but the style of company over consumer in that top-down style (we make it, you must buy it mentality) can and will have it's bad days, eventually. IMO, some day Apple will feel the kind of backlash from consumers that Sony is going through with its products and not be so hot a company or commodity– so enjoy it while it lasts.. because it WILL end. Hopefully 2010 can start a decade of non-conformist consumers so that there will be more healhty competition in technology, energy production, and throuhout the economy! I can only pray for this to happen! Wake up consumer!
I would like to thank all the liberal democrats who posted on this site today for not blaming George Bush for Steve Job's wealth. It is refreshing to hear that democrat's have not blamed everything (including the depth of their ignorance) on George Bush. And to those liberal democrats who ranted about financial reform let us not forget that it was Bill (I did not have sexual relations with that woman) Clinton who repealed Glass Steagall.
This is an interesting blog entry, especially the responses.
I think a point which gets made but then lost in the mire is that Steve Jobs made a vast sum of money TWICE.
Not just with Apple, but also with Pixar. He made a world beating company and brand with Apple, and then when he got kicked out by the ivy leaguers for being the wrong sort, he went and did it again.
So that is curious. Once, maybe lucky. Twice?
Actually, three times is the charm. Cause he made Apple twice. It was a wreck when he came back to it, as everybody knows.
But what strikes me about Steve Jobs, insofar as he is what I call a great American, is that he made his name by helping folks.
Steve's whole philosophy is centered around the customer experience and solving everyday problems for everyday folks. That was woz's kick, too. The "personal computer". Not the corporate tool.
You Americans forget how special that is in the world, because you are spoiled with a society that has a universal work/business ethic and is not consumed by a entrenched class system (yet).
Let me tell you guys, as a non american, how impressive it is that a man can rise to genuine fame and fortune by being useful for ordinary folks.
It doesn't work like the in Russia or Europe, or South America, or the UK.
The UK has a Queen, and Lords (literally) who are born into political office. The Europeans and the Russians have replaced their aristocracies with political regimes. If you belong to the party, you are one of the former aristocrats.
And the party (formerly the communist party, now the EUSSR's SDP and CDP) that controls the wealth and law of Europe is precisely the same as the aristocracy it replaced (not least because the communist party was made up of aristocrats: Lenin signed his cheques in Zurich "heriditary nobleman Uylanov", and he had contempt for the uneducated lower orders).
If you have a good idea in Europe, it gets appropriated. If you don't belong to the party, you don't get the contract.
If you believe in helping common folk in Europe, you are basically a diseased loser who is of the wrong class entirely. That goes especially for socialists. Socialists and communists don't want to serve common folks with solutions, they want to save them with great advice and 100% party control of the economy. They have the same jesus christ delusions as there grandfathers, the dukes, the lords and the barons. And the viscounts, the counts, the knights of the garter, the knights of the round table and so on.
You talk about Jobs being a democrat like it is something nasty, but you guys don;t know just how special he is, and how good he makes america look to guys like me who despise both socialism and the class/caste systems of Europe and Asia.
Jobs is an icon of a service culture, of a willingness to work for common people and to listen to their problems and help them do the stuff they want to do.
And he got rich and famous!!
He is everything that is so fantastic about the USA, compared to most of the rest of the world. He is what people mean, when they talk about the shining light on the hill.
Not Steve Jobs specifically, but rather that fact that "only in America" could someone have his story.
Awesome guy, awesome work, awesome culture. You should all be so proud of a country and culture that can make a hero of such a man.
Of course, you guys do profound stupid and ignorant really well too, but it is a package deal and a big country.
Jobs is special. Show me the Chinese Steve Jobs. Show me the Russian Steve Jobs. Show me the English Steve jobs. Here's a laugh: show em the French Steve Jobs!!
Jobs is a common man with a common touch and he is worshipped by the multitude.
Only in America, folks. Be grateful for what you have.
Ughhh? or should I say duh? The wealth are responsible for the economic collapse..if you believe that, you are ignorant and will always be a failure. Barney Frank and HUD are to blame. They forced Fannie and Freddy to lower their standards so more lower income people could own a home and qualify. the goal rose from 30% to 55% home ownership for middle class and below. Once your relieble goverment enabled the poor to get over their heads, they lost everyting their house and all they own. Barney Frank and Bill clinton got their way, afordable housing, they just had no idea it was not a sustainable idea and would lead to economic failure
Anyone in his position cares nothing about money (unlike with some of the comments suggested otherwise), Steve Jobs just want to do something he loves and it happens to make money. I bet that, besides his health, Power and Passion are the only two things that he cares the most.
@Joe in LaCrosse
Last time I checked, the biggest tax cheats in the country are currently working for the Obama admin. You should also check your stats on the political persuasion of bankers before posting.
@Joe LaCrosse
I am sure Steve Jobs will be punished for his success just like every other individual regardless of his political affiliations.
Thank you Proud American.
The objective is quality. Quality of product, quality of industry and quality in way of life for employees and all that benefit from the various interactions.
Money and stock options will never be a good measure of quality.
I agree that this conversation has taken a very political turn. Where do I get off saying that ALL DUMBOCRATS want to take from the rich and give to the lazy. That is not always correct. I apologize.
But then again, I see posters below refer to the fact that having health insurance is akin to a God given right (I don't see it anywhere in the Constitution). And if people are too lazy to get it themselves, then some rich person should buy it for them. And if you decided not to go to college, well then some other rich guy should buy you food. In the event that you are not a real go-getter and can't hold down a job, there must be another rich person around the corner waiting to pay for the roads/libraries/parks/etc that you want to use. Additionally, screw that saving for retirement thing, there's gotta be some other rich folks around that can pay for SS. And on and on and on.
So, call it what you want, but folks' political affiliation is not on trial here. You can sure tell a lot about a fella by how he responds to comments in a forum such as this. There are basically two camps…one congratulates someone on their success and tries harder to emulate (regardless of what type of laptop they own) and the other camp bitches, whines and moans about not getting their free stuff and how stuff sucks and things aren't fair (as if they would know) and why rich people aren't giving them more, etc.
I know which camp I am in.
We wonder how some people know if Steve Jobs donates to causes. We donate anonymously..it does not HAVE to be made public.
We know that Steve Jobs is a tremendous family man and cares deeply about his employees.
We know that he is makes a boat load of money…which helps to pay for all those who feel "entitled" to free rent, free health care, etc.
We saw Apple hit 7.75 in 2001, did we buy… no. In October, 2008 we watched it skid it $75.00 per share..did we buy it no..shame on us. Kudos to Jobs for building such a super company named Apple!!!
Watch which kids in America are getting the top scholarships, winning spelling bees, taking first prize in science fairs….gosh, could it be all those great kids of Eastern cultures have a far better attitude and work ethic…HMMMMM.
Interesting NEGATIVE reactions. Too bad these people don't have response-ability instead of living in a reactive state.
How would you want YOUR money considered if you were the person in this "wealthy" position?
Apple and PIXAR are companies, built and run for a specific purpose. A purpose that benefits many. If you don't like the products or movies fine, but don't profess to have the RIGHT answer all the time and don't try to dictate what others should do or believe.
Money, paper or otherwise is a reflection of value. Someone, somewhere considers these companies and their products to have value.
In the world of "wealth" contribution is the goal. In the world of aimless desire self-serving want is the goal.

It's always a shame to reduce successful individuals like Steve Jobs to a mere tally of their net worth. Visionaries like Mr. Jobs demonstrate over time that they aspire to higher ideals and believe the world might be made better. Starting in 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak saw a unique promise for personal computing and inspired others to share that dream. Through all his ups and downs, Mr. Jobs has held fast to his vision for "the rest of us." The true measure of America is that it helps dreamers like this realize their dreams. I like to think that Mr. Jobs, unlike the selfish and conspicuously wealthy so common in the world today, wakes up every morning thinking about how to make Apple and Pixar even more successful — and not about how much more money he made while he slept. I buy Apple products to keep that dream alive. Best wishes, Steve!
@Mike. S
Liberals like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet don't dodge taxes like their republican counterparts. They pay thier fare share and without complaint. Meanwhile their repub counterparts, mostly corrupt bankers, fleece the country and expect handouts for doing a crummy job.
Thanks for all the great Comments about a Great LIberal! Steve Jobs!!
I remember reading some report that he is one of the victims of Madoff Scandal, I'm wondering if he is also on the list of swiss bank tax evaders?
Russell, you've got to chill. You need to get into an anger management class.
When the stock market becomes reflective of the economy then I will totally agree with this wealth being justified. The problem is that it isn't at all related. Further much of this wealth is on paper and not cash. As the poor get poorer and the middle class continues to decline, the US economy will get weaker and weaker and this wealth will disappear. The economics of our economy is illogical and if the power brokers done figure it out soon and stop milking it for their short term profits, the economy and their wealth will both be gone.
WOW!!!!…This is not what I had expected to read on this site. It seems as though you cannot go on a comment page without everyone expressing their own political views. Apple products are second to none. My name is Sean, and im a MAC….!!! HA
You guys need to lighten it up here, hug it out over the computer!!!
I think these comments have caught my eye more than the article. I'm sorry, but when did Steve Jobs say that he would donate his money to charity? Why does he have to fork over all his money because you say so? He made his money off of his hard work. How many of you donated your earning to charity this year? If you did, most likely you did not, then give yourself a pat on the back. You just accomplished a selfish good deed. Sure it's great to give money to charity, but don't boast about it. Steve Jobs is one of the most successful CEO's in the world- not the most successful "charity giver."
I can't begrudge anyone for making their fortune. If you envy his money, go out and make your fortune. This is America, go get your piece of the pie. As for starving children in Africa: There are starving and homeless children in AMERICA. Take care of them first.
"Steve Jobs is great business man. He's also a liberal an environmentalist and he's been quoted as saying that the top tax rate is too low."
We need to pass a law so billionaires who feel undertaxed may donate as much money as they want to the federal government. I wonder how much Jobs will give?
I get so tired of people bring up the "there are kids starving in Africa! How could Steve Jobs hoard that much money to himself!?" This is one of those "arguments" that nobody can really argue with. OF COURSE it's terrible that kids are starving. Nobody thinks otherwise. But it's also not Steve Job's responsibility to eradicate hunger. How much money do all of you complainers donate yourself to charity? Probably not much, if anything. It's the bottom-feeder class in this country that is destroying us from the inside out…always wanting something for nothing and hating anyone that has money. The ironic thing is that all of these bottom-feeding whiners would give anything to be in Steve Job's position. It's a very hypocritical way of thinking. Unfortunately, that's becoming the norm. What used to make sense, doesn't make sense. What used to not make any sense and was reprehensible is not common place and acceptable. If Steve Jobs was able to put himself in a position to make that much money, good for him.
Jobs has earned it by creating the concept and taking the risk. He is not a CEO gets recruited into a GE or IBM, or major bank, negotiates a huge comp package lays off a bunch of people to boost profits and gets rich.
On the other hand if he has to pay some additional taxes to help with jobs and health insurance for those with less, so be it. They are the ones buying his product and I'm sure he will still have plenty of money and will be okay.
His value on paper increased. It doesn't mean $282 million dollars fell out of the sky and into his lap. If the perceived value of the companies he owns stock in falls, the $282 million will disappear as quickly as it came.
Don't confuse the "paper wealth" of the ultra-wealthy with the real wealth of the other 99% of us.
Alex, only in my home state of La. is where you can find such ignorance as you just typed. No one is trying to GIVE it to anyone and if you think the people in the party that I suspect you belong to earned every penny, then I really get a sense of your lack of intelligence.
all of the comments I have read have been by conservative, uneducated morons or under-educated liberals who speak before thinking.
my dad is a frend of the guy that does his and apple's adds. job's is not lazy, just very smart and hard working.
@Alex. Steve Jobs is great business man. He's also a liberal an environmentalist and he's been quoted as saying that the top tax rate is too low. America's middle class grew faster in the 1950's than any other time in our history and the top tax rate was over 90%. I'm not suggesting that we go back to 90% but I do know that the shrinking of America's middle class is directly related to the top 1% holding onto more and more of America's wealth.
good for him.
and Jack in LA – only %20 still admit to being republican but less than that admit to voting democrat (dumbocrat)!
Paul Clearfield in PA probably has enough money to buy food for hundreds of people each month on his middle-class income.
Jobs, Gates, et. al. probably contribute tens of millions of dollars each year to feed and clothes people. They do a better job of giving their money away than the Gov't does.
Why not write about WHY people are starving each day??? Oh, because most are in totalitarian regimes — unlike the USA and other free republics where people can do without hunger if they're ABLE and WILLING to work and realize the American Dream.
There is no Cuban Dream. No Sudan Dream. No Pakistan Dream. Think it through.
Thank God for Billionaires and the people they feed through employment and philanthropy. Heaven help us with people like Paul Clearfield.
Good for him, but what is this a "feel good story" for all of the people out there who have lost their jobs and have nothing? Bad timing. Nobody wants to hear about how the rich get richer; especially when that person is already worth BILLIONS!!!
Blacky:"Obama and the Democrats want to give it to you people that have not done squat to earn it."
Ha ha ha. Then why in the world does all these smart techies from West Coast vote and support Obama if he wants to take away their money? Why do all East Coast conservative bankers and insurance guys who suck our blood hate him? Wonder why?
Good for him! He deserves it, The real measure of his success is just how many jobs has he(Apple) created over the last 20 years, how many families has he supported, how much taxes have all of these employees paid to the U.S. and local governments. People who whine about how much an entrepenuer like Jobs make, need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.
Funny how liberal minded people tend to love Apple products……I've seen many Apple stickers right next to Obama bumber stickers. Sounds like they should do what's right and boycott the Apple brand until Jobs has a net worth they agree with……btw, I'm being sarcastic.
hahaha… A lot of you people are so stupid. This is a news story that recognizes the success of an entreprneur and a lot of you idiots are turning this into a political debate. Pretenscious… boo hoo my way is better than yours.. blah blah blah… Congrats to Steve Jobs, keep living the dream Brother!
Blacky…saw a typo in your last post. I'll fix it. No need to thank me. Here's the correct version:
This guy has earned every penny. This is what the American dream is and the Republicans want to give him even bigger tax breaks and make the American middle-class pay for it until they can no longer afford to buy a home or health insurance. Stop crying about how this makes you sick or justify what his net worth really is. Anyone would trade shoes with this guy
Jobs is nothing but a hack. The guy rides the Linux freight train and pretends it's his own. Own up to your crooked ways or just accept you're a much worse person than your Microsoft counterpart.
what a joke: A company built on poor hardware, exorbitant prices and ripping off the open-source world.
Mac's are for morons that buy the ideal put forward by "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" adverts. People, these adverts are done for one reason: disguise the fact that the two are the same damn thing. A mac is just the same hardware with Linux on it. A PC can have Linux on it too. And guess what? A Linux based "PC" will cost you $2000 less than the over-hyped pieces of junk Jobs' boys sell.
Never have I witnessed in all my years a company that was born out of pure deliberate copying. They copied the beatles, they ripped of Torvalds, they lied about Gates. This company deserves to be in the toilet, not making it's talisman richer by the second.
Seriously, if you're looking for the American Dream, look no further than Steve Jobs. The guy opitomises the "steal whatever you need to to get ahead" attitude that big American business now takes.
Yes, I am also unfuriated at how the hard working rich are penalized and forced to give it to the poor, under democratic rule of course. Makes me want to gag.
Congradulations to Steve Jobs–he has earned what he has by working hard, staying focused, and personal sacrifice. People who say stupid things like "Nobody should be that rich" are the same people who don't understand the things he's done to get where he is.
They also are probably one trick ponies who haven't broadened their intellectual portfolio or tried to learn some other trade.
People need to stop obsessing over money, and learn to live a life you love, where you find satisfaction in accomplishment.
Yes this is the American dream, no equality, 5% of the people with 95% of all the money, millions of families starving, with no health insurance and jobs that don't increase pay with inflation and spread the money even more to the upper class who get more rights and more privilages than lower working class citizens.. the American dream…
If you want to be rich then work, work your butt off. If you want to be a bum keep voting Democrat so you will be given your meager existance. Anyone that is rich because of hard work deserves it. If you spent as much time working as you do whining then you could afford something other than cigarettes and ripple.
Patrick, you nailed it on the head. Typical Democratic response. See, I told you to "invent something" and you immediately reply with how & why you aren't/can't do it. And challenged me to go do it. Sure, why not let me go invent something, employ a bunch of people and let you sit at home and enjoy the benefits of my time and energy through government handouts. Talk about tired old stories.
Until someone understands the joy of spending their own money that they earned with thier own hands, they'll continue to beg off other people's accomplishments. Those people are called children. I have some, and I love them enough to support them and all of the kids whose parents don't want to support them because they finally got their liberal democrat in office who is going to continue the "freebies". Tell your kids I said, "You are welcome". Now, I've got to get back to work because it won't be long before I get whacked with another tax to pay for somebody else's health care.
I like how Guys like alex ect. think free enterprize is based on fairness and hard work. I like how all the patriotic companys abandon you by dealing with the commies, and give them your jobs, remember those bad guys you sacrificed a lot of boys and civilians fighting it. The rich have no loyalty, but expect your children to fight and die for their profit making. Do not defend them you are getting killed for oil companies now. THINK PEOPLE THINK
right on mr. jobs . you work hard and have a great team . i am a pc but am thankful for advances made by mac .
Congrats Steve, you took a company near death and brought them to the top of the foodchain. You took stock and $1 a year in pay — ate your own dogfood — company fails you get nothing. Not like the worms in so many companies who bleed the company dry while it fails. Imagine if most companie were run the same way. Instead we get CEOs getting paid $50+ million while the company tanks. In 1998 Michael Dell; when asked what he would do with Apple said he would shut it down and give the money back to the investors — guess who could buy whom now…
I still prefer my own life. I would not trade places with him. I'd rather live a modest life in good health then a wealthly life with pancreatic cancer.
Hey Steve..So you made $103.5 million since this morning. How about thrown just $1 mil of that my way. I own an iPhone AND and iPod. I watched ABC and ESPN today (cause I'm unemployed and have nothing to do). Plus I actually worked for Disney before. Come on. Help out the little guy.
This guy has earned every penny. This is what the American dream is and Obama and the Democrats want to give it to you people that have not done squat to earn it. Stop crying about how this makes you sick or justify what his net worth really is. Anyone would trade shoes with this guy.
A guy I met worked directly for Jobs. What he was astonished by was Jobs abosolute refusal to compromise on the Apple Way – Ease of use and elegant design. He had to recalibrate everything he "knew" to satisfy Jobs vision. Jobs stuck to his vision and Apple is sticking it to everyone else these days. Apple earned more than Intel last quarter!!
It doesn't matter how much super rich people are worth based on their stock portofolio. It is not cash and they can not cash it out at once. If one day Steve decides to sell all of his stock those stock will crash. Even if he cashes out what is he going to do with his cash? That much money can only be kept in the stock market.
Stories like this make me throw up. Very many less fortunate people in this world are starving, because food costs money. I'm not complaining about the man, it's the fact that people die every day starving, and when someone owns this much money, for whatever reason……..is a rediculous news story. Why not write about how many people die from starvation every day? Incredible news story !
There is way too much populist outrage directed toward people that don't have jobs. Most of them would like jobs let me assure you of that. The idea that there are all these people being enabled by liberals to sit around all day enjoying life is a fallacy. Last I checked, gov't assistance wasn't that much money. Our focus needs to be on lowering healthcare costs and mandating that our trading partners pay their workers decent wages. Otherwise the end result of the free market will be the business owners at the top and sweatshop workers…the poor, at the bottom. The free market results in sweatshops plain and simple. Rules, regulations and standards are what is now needed.
I see some Republicans here (apparently part of that 20% of Americans who'll still admit to being Republicans) posting some of their old tired nonsense about "liberals" taking your money, spending too much blah blah blah blah blah…
As if Republicans have EVER balanced a budget or reduced a deficit or made government smaller or helped the middle-class or made the economy better. LMAO. Laughable buffoons.
After the suffering and destruction brought on this country over the past thirty years – and the last eight years in particular – by Republicans and their total incompetence and endless failed policies…hearing ANY Republican offering their opinion or criticism on ANYTHING is like hearing OJ Simpson offering his opinion on domestic violence.
"invent something get rich?
tb…. if it were that easy then everyone would of done so. Tell you what… sit down at a table and try to think of a viable product you can sell and make money off of.
yeah… we are waiting for your ideas.
Richer on the sweat Of us the employees, discrimation by store managers and the like. Steve enjoy it while you can. Your HR Staff and senior managers killing what I believed was your pride ( our soul our people) yeah
Everytime I see the sheer beauty and quality of the industrial designs constantly and unfailingly coming out of Apple I am sincerely grateful that people like Jobs can still make their way through the "crabs in a pail" mentality of too many Americans/Canadians. Crabs caught in a pail will keep trying to pull back all those who are successful in negotiating their way to the top of the bucket. Soldier on Jobs. We really need you and folks like you in these troubled times.
Good for him – he comes with new products that are simple! Better him than the Wall Street guy who is geting a @200 million bonus because he is good at moving money from one pocket to another. Till the time we have people changing money making more money than the tech guys, this country is doomed to becoming a third world country.
The only reason anyone has an issue with the amounts of money some people make, including Jobbs, is because it's not them. We all have the opportunity to make more money than we know what to do with. We simply need to increase our knowledge of money and how it works and then act on that knowledge and get creative. Most will not do this, and yet, still feel it is their right to complain when someone else does and is successful doing so.
In business, employees are paid for they're worth. If you're not getting paid what you think you're worth, search the internet for your job function and see what the average salary range is for what you do. If your job function doesn't make the kind of money you'd like to be making, perhaps you should get some more skills that will allow you to get a better paying job. Do you want to be worth more than 5 billion dollars. Go be an all-star entrepreneur like Steve Jobs. But where does anyone get off telling someone what they "should or should not do" with their money.
I just graduated into the worst job market in dozens of years and am doing fine. I refuse to rely on anyone but myself to get me where I want to be financially. I will not rely on the government to subsidize my lifestyle if I become unemployed, because I will save my money for a cloudy day instead of hoping someone else will take care of me. More Americans should be like me.
Cool. Where's John Scully right now? Good for Steve. Even if you despise Apple, you have to admire them coming back from the brink to where they are now.
My mother invented the tool that allowed these guys to develop the businesses they did while she worked for a company in the Silicon Valley…gave them the patent because she wanted to be a good employee and citizen. Not everyone thinks of money and themselves first! She is now 62 and retired with a meager income.
I only have respect for those who think about everyone instead of just themselves!
I'm so glad you aovid stereotyping HAD ENUFF. You and all your other delusional conservatives are so quick to pointing an accusatory finger at American workers for problems that are primarily the business decisions (often poor ones). You must think its some sort of blood sport to blame American workers. What about the misfortune and grief caused by lousy management as well as Government policies and tax law hostile to workers and favorable to sending jobs overseas. I don't see any mention of that in your diatribe. Oh yes, the much vaunted private sector – always efficient. How convenient to use the canard of blaming the worker while ignoring Wall Street and corporate mismanagement.
Fortunately, I'm employed, reasonably well paid and like my job(aerospace engineering). My friends in HR tell me its heart breaking to see so many talented individuals seeking jobs beneath their skill levels because that's all there is available. So tell us HAD ENUFF, where are all the jobs that pay a reasonable salary that all these lazy American Workers are turning down? I'd like to know. So go ahead and share your secrets And oh BTW, a recent Harvard study showed that over 65% of all bankruptcies are the result of medical costs – not misusing their credit card and/or living beyond personal means. Its disengenuous and an outright lie to state that all unemployed American Workers are lazy and demand too much. We are (or were) one of the most productive nations on earth. However, since 2000 workers for the first time in history have not shared in the propserity that brough to the "wealth class" – wages have remained relatively flat taking into account inflation. Meanwhile the salaries of the wealth class have increased as a percentage of workers salaries at a rate never seen before during that same period. Shame on you HAD ENUFF for propagating the standard conservative lie and blaming the American Worker. Shame.
Oh one other thought HAD ENUFF, do you think all those bankers are worth the bonuses they are getting despite the fact they are recipients of Government corporate welfare – Oh I forgot, we have to bail the financial institutions out because they are too big to fail and the solvency of America is at stake if they go under. So that's not "socialism" or corporate "welfare". Hmmm, maybe fascism (similar to that practiced by Italy prior to WW2) is a more apt term. I've "had enough" of attitudes like HAD ENUFF's. I don't normally wish bad on others, but perhaps something bad will come your way not of your making that you can not recover from. Perhaps then you will know what many American Workers are experiencing and can show a little compassion instead of selfishness. And along those lines I ask in general, where is the compassion for our fellow citizens anyway. I guess its a matter of social darwnism and "I've got mine jack". Are we citizens of this nation interested in exercising civic responsibilities that care for those that need it most and furthering the great American experiment? Or are we simply consumers, only interested in self gratification. We are a bigger nation than the greed and selfishness embodied by notions captured in notes like HAD ENUFF's. Come on America.
A couple of comments here:
1. we are not a socialst country, well then again, nobody told that to Obama. The "rich" pay more in taxes and got there because they took risk, educated themselves and had the intuition to provide value..this is the free economy
2. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet never asked or craved publicity, commiting their $40 Billion fortune to helping others is big news.
3. Jobs if you know anything about his history is a prick, right up there with Larry Ellison. But they are brilliant pricks who have earned their success.
4. Many stories exist about prople who had nothing and made themselves a success. If you do not like your situation, get help, change, learn and make something of yourself. If you are sitting on your arse, blaming others and watching TV then you deserve what you have.
God do the conservatives have to blame EVERYTHING on us liberals? Seriously now… that's just stupid and immature. Your leader ruined us during the past 8 years now shut up. I'm liberal, but I don't think he should give away all his money… sheesh.
Okay, all the objectivists and individualists need to stop writing messages. Everyone is sick and tired of listening to you piss and moan about every little problem. The United States is not a dictatorship and it never will be. If you really believe the US is heading in the wrong direction then leave. No one is putting a gun to your head to stay. Hell, if you really want to avoid income taxes then live in Costa Rica. You can be creative and innovative somewhere else. I have an even better idea for you, how about all you little objectivist twits try out a little thing called honor. Steve Jobs has it. Hell, every successful business man has it. All you little Ayn Rand morons thinks that a person needs fair monetary compensation to produce a meaningful worthwhile product. But I'd be willing to bet that Steve thought more about honoring his product than his wallet. Steve intended to put out a quality product that reflects well on his own virtue. He is rich because he honors his craft, and I respect him for it. The rest of you twits can keep sitting around complaining about how creative you are, but how you refuse to produce anything because the government will steal all of your money. You're just as bad as the welfare junkies but at least we don't have to hear them complain.
A picture is worth a thousand words (http://blackberryrocks.com/2009/06/15/homeless-person-takes-picture-michelle-obama-soup-kitchen-blackberry/) I love it! Typical Dumbocrats, love the Pres because he is going to insure them now. What's the incentive to work when you have "free" food, clothes, school, and now healthcare? Must be why they have so much time to whine about rich people (no, I am not rich, just employed). I can't wait to see what happens when Steve gets taxed so much he quits the rat race….uh,oh who's going to keep giving the handouts?
@Gordy Orr, Wrightstown PA said: HOWEVER, the back of my iPhone says "assembled in China" – as does my wife's iPod. So, once again, we have another company tht can ONLY turn a profit thanks to Chinese labor.
Would you work for $2 an hour? In order to survive in this global economy, we have to sell into China. Not having things made in China is not going to help.
Steve Jobs deserves the money he gets. Apple was on the brink of destruction. Now it is one of the most profitable companies around. But, for people on this message board saying that "people need to work for what they want". Many people do. This ideology of people not working or wanting to work is a farce. That they all want extended benefits from the government so they can stay home is ridiculous. There are people like that, but they are a small number of people who abuse the system…just like in any system in the world.
To those who always defend the rich and say business is always good, understand this one fact…..there is a 99.9% chance you will NEVER reach that plateau. so stop constantly defending a way of life just because you hope to attain it, because chances are you never will. Work hard, love your family, love each other. Then you will be rich
Steve is a good example of the American Dream! We are all on a level playing field, America offers the tools and resources to build wealth beyond your wildest dreams. Steve and other successful Americans see that and take advantage of it. You can't criticize Steve for being rich. It's the result of success. Don't punish him for that. Because of Steve Jobs there is employment:
1.what would you use at work to access the internet?
2.You would probably be running around with a CD player during workouts without Jobs's ipod
3. Microsoft would be spoon feeding our computer market with it's usual garbage.
Let's face the fact. Our lives and this country are better because of Steve Jobs.
A note to the angry liberals out there: If you don't like capitalism you are living in the wrong country. Go to France – you will really enjoy it there.
A note to the unemployed:
Have hope, be creative, you too can live your dreams – think of ideas that solve real problems and help society. Sometimes the smallest thing can be the biggest.
What a motivating article!
Stay positive America, we're on our way back up!
No way someone should have that much money. What can he possibly do with $282 million–and that's only a fraction of his incredible wealth. He should be rewarded for his leadership at Apple and he certainly deserves more than the average person. However, there are entire STATES in the U.S. that could meet their budget deficits with the billions he has as his personal wealth. Jobs must already have any material thing he could possibly want — what does he need billions more for? That much money in the hands of one person doesn't advance society one bit.
Did he almost died latley, lets hope that this expierience
change him,now he knows that he will not be ableto take anything with him only the good doing,People is not okey to be that rich when children are dying every day from starvation etc,I guess we are in this evolution
procees ane day we become HUMAN
What this JESUS the CHRIST was talking about..
giving to the poor…yeh not yet we not humans not yet
I heard Steve speach at Stamphord, did not mach his acctions not yet..
I tend to be disgusted by overpaid execs., but in the case of Steve Jobs, I have never felt that someone deserved rewards so much. His genius and personal power to inspire others is unsurpassed.
For the person who said Steve Jobs doesn't drop any money on charity—do some research! Otherwise you're ignorant.
Congrats to Jobs. Gordy Orr, America's expertise is exploitation. When per capita GDP increases high enough that production costs increase we will find others to produce for us. For someone to win, someone else must lose. On another note, the new iMacs are amazing. I suggest you get one, and also see Toy Story in 3D.

He and a lot of other executives can decrease their net worth, which I'm sure they're not really interested in, and help a lot of people right here by not employing people in China at sweat shop wages and help people in the U.S. by bringing some of the manufacturing back to the U.S. Sure he might only be worth 3 billion if he did but it would go a long way towards putting some people back to work who would actually be able to afford to buy Apple products.
I keep reading nonsense about how liberals are ruining the country with the typical circle logic of the entitlement nonsense. First of all, Dems, progressives and liberals have ZERO problems with people getting rich off of hard work. We have a HUGE problem with people who accumulate or acquire their wealth at the expense of people, the environment and the law. We also do NOT have a problem investing in our people, and historically that has worked out extremely well for the US. What has not worked well is unregulated markets and ignoring the will of the majority to cater to the wealthy.
This isn't new, and it constantly amazes me to see republicans repeat the same moronic arguments that they have espoused for a hundred years. What does it take for you folks to finally shift out of your blatant stupidity and rejoin the human race? The empirical data is absolutely clear, and the fact that you can read this means investing in our people worked for you.
Gordy: Made in China (not that I support that in any way) because unions have made labor rates in this country ridiculous. Just take a look at what UAW workers in the auto industry make. Plus the cost of their ridiculous benefits and even if they get laid off due to the severe downturn they still get most of thier pay. Want to fix this country: Honest days work for an honest days pay. Time to stop the handouts. Work – get paid. Don't work – don't get paid.
@T of Canada said: Pixar was bought for 10$M from George Lucas and iPod was invented by Tony Fadell based on the DAP from Kane Kramer patented in 1979. Kane had also envisioned downloading of data/software on his DAP. He now works at Apple.
Yes, you are right. However, being smart doesn't mean creating everything from ground up, but realizing what is available and who to hire.
Capitlism is what BUILT OUR COUNTRY and is why MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of people flock here to THIS DAY. So people that are complaining or out of work..the answer is not to complain and bash the people that have it…but learn new skills, and make YOURSELVES profitable. If someone from China, Europe, Africa or any other country can come here and do it, why can't you? Lets be American, and learn to take a piece of the pie, instead of stealing bites out of others.
Why all the backhanded insults about Bill Gates seeking publicity for his unparalleled generosity. First charity of the size and scope he implemented is bound to get publicity. Secondly that publicity has been largely used to raise awareness of the causes he has supported, which generates more giving by others. For instance his very generous grants to support Rotary International and the WHO in their efffort to wipe out polio worldwide, garnered tens of millions of dollars in follow on donations from Rotary clubs, governments and individuals around the globe. Bravo, Bill Gates and keep up the good publicity.
- A Rotarian
"Try and understand this….1% of the people (aka wealthy) pay 95% of the taxes in this country."
I am calling B.S. Show me your source. The top most wealthy pay more taxes… and they get more tax breaks.
"Shame on Steve Jobs, he may be richer but hardly drops a penny to the poor."
Indeed! Unfortunately almost 30,000 Children died of starvation today alone, and that is far less time than it would take Mr. Jobs to count his extra $282 Million. I hope he sleeps well at night.
Steve Jobs employs approximately 35,000 people. Thats 35,000 mortgages, cars, boats, etc. that are purchased because of his "insight". Not to mention the payroll taxes he pays, plus the income tax that his employees pay. Dumbocrats ( or Obamatards) take note, if you want to be rich…invent something/start a business and employ 35,000 people. Otherwise quit bitching using your "free" computers (donated by Steve and provided by my tax dollars at the public library) and get a job. Steve, me and the rest of the folks on here who have jobs and pay taxes are tired of carrying you.
Its not about taxes, and how much he made, and its not about the the ability that he was able to get a liver when you need one.
Its about cutting costs (not giving raises), making effective products (iphone), and putting the stock holder first before the employee. (no soul).
but then again, this is the way a business is run…..right???
REALITY CHECK: I really do admire Job's vision. Only 1 in a 1000 businessmen are true visionaries. All the rest are short-term-profit crooks.
HOWEVER, the back of my iPhone says "assembled in China" – as does my wife's iPod. So, once again, we have another company tht can ONLY turn a profit thanks to Chinese labor.
BE WARNED: Once China's standard of living catches up – EVERYTHING will collapse. It's inevitable. You better learn to farm (like I am part-time).
It is so hard to believe that there are still people who think that because they show up for work (late) put in their 5 or 6 hour days (while surfing the web, playing solitaire, making lots of personal phone calls)and sneaking out early are entitled to more than their paycheck. People like Steve Jobs and other entrepreneurs create things like wealth for their shareholders, jobs for the masses, markets for their goods so why should he not benefit from his efforts. After all he is making a salary of $1.00 per yer and all of his wealth is a result of his taking risks and working long hard hours to make his company a success. I bet he never collected a day of unemployment in his life. Are you listening all those who are looking for extended unemployment/welfare benefits so you can stay home and complain more?!?!?! There are jobs to be had for those who are willing to work and not stay at home and get handouts from the liberal democrats.
I like Pixar movies a lot. I like my Macbook a lot. Jobs is rich because he makes things people like. I'll assume none of the haters here have ever seen Toy Story?
People who think the American public should receive the tax dollars of wealthy individuals are complete morons. Our society is not a dictatorship. We are not all the same and thus CREATIVE and INNOVATIVE individuals should not be disregarded. Smart individuals and people who are persistent earn wealth, not the ones who stand back and follow the footsteps of others. It is ridiculous that most Americans expect rich people to pay for everything. If people weren't idiots and purchased homes and luxurious goods they can't afford we wouldn't be in this recession is the first place. If I work hard and earn substantial personal wealth, I want ti decide myself what charities to give back to. Screw the government and the way to want to drain every penny from individuals that work hard and are innovative.
@RTF
You do know that Steve Jobs is a democrat don't you?? As is Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Just thought I would tell you that since republicans are the idiots that can't earn their money. They only way they get it is to inherit it (aka Georgie Bushie)
We know Rich people are evil. Just remember that Rich people tend to provide jobs. When the government comes down on employers it greatly effects employees.
With true unemployment numbers hovering around 16% MAYBE someone should take another look at the way the libs attack rich people and corporations.
WAKE UP and realize that this government is EVER expanding at our expense. The government continues to hire and grow, while the private sector chokes to death.
I REMEMBER THE DAYS WHEN PEOPLE WANTED TO WORK, NOT A FREE RIDE AND A HAND OUT.
PRAISE BE TO BARACKA OUR LORD AND DICTATOR.
I am a guy who has worked hard for the past 30 years..I haven't really made any money to speak of..but what I have is a result of decisions I have made..I am responsible for what I have..Steve Jobs is responsible for what he has…and he deserves it..Steve Jobs runs businesses..businesses operate to make a profit…If you want what Steve Jobs has get off your … and get to work..he owes you or anyone else nothing..quit worrying about what others have and mind your own business..then you won't be trying to figure out how to spend someones elses money…Democrats..Sheesh….
Drew said: "Also to all the "hardwork, rah rah" people out there – Jobs came up with the ideas for the iPod, Apple computers, iPhone, Pixar…I believe that is more valuable then writing a portion of code for one application or doing some marketing research. That's why he is a billionare and not hoemless."
Pixar was bought for 10$M from George Lucas and iPod was invented by Tony Fadell based on the DAP from Kane Kramer patented in 1979. Kane had also envisioned downloading of data/software on his DAP. He now works at Apple.
Good for Steve Jobs, the guy is a genius. And he has probably donated more to charities than every person on this entire forum put together will ever donate in their lives and then some…
@drew I believe Pixar was purchased from lucasfilms actually, but to Steve's credit he made it what it is.
Too bad the Newton came out too soon to catch the PDA wave, since it was out far sooner than the palms and was super cool. A friend had one in middle school it was crap by todays standards but amazing for that time when laptops were nearly unheard of and especially heavy and most cell phones were in cars or gigantic bags/purses.
Apple/Steve have been good innovators but everyone has skeletons so we can't revere him too too much, just admire his and his people he surrounds himself with for their ingenuity and foresight.
Well paid? What do you consider well paid. I worked for Apple and I can tell you I was far from "well paid". I left to take a better paying job.
@drew
jobs did not start pixar. pixar started out as a division of lucasfilm. lucas sold it to steve for $10million to cover lucas' divorce settlement.
jobs purchased pixar for their renderman technology and a belief that they would produce consumer level hardware/software enabling the general public to create 3d animation (much of this philosophy if not the exact technology can be seen in iphoto, imovie, idvd, etc…) in fact even pixar didn't think they'd be a film company. they produced short films as proof of concepts for the technology they invented.
jobs has almost no involvement in pixar, it's ed catmull and john lasseter who run pixar and now disney animation.
I second that. Think of your employees. You are using them for greed. You are no different then MICROSOFT!!!
To the posters complaining that there are too many people in America suffering due to fortunes of the likes of Steve Jobs. GET A LIFE! I am in the military and just got back from a deployment in Africa, you don't know what suffering is. Be proud you live in a country that gives you the opportunity to receive a welfare check that is more than most Africans receive in a year. I fully agree with the other posters here that his wealth will lead to even more opportunity and create jobs. His win is our win. When you look how Steve created Apple, from the basement of a garage, it should make you get off your lazy ass and, instead of criticizing him, do something to better your situation and the situation of those around you.
There, I got that rant out of my system. Time to get back to my home chores.
Has anyone taken a look at this forum? My brother is going through the same issue? Steve if you want to get any richer think of your employees who are making you rich. Who have turned around Apple. Who have made it your success. Think Different should not be just a slogan.
"Sigh just another scumbag rich person. That money should be given back to the taxpayers of this country."
Really? Really…? Why did Apple get a bailout? No. If half of the uneducated people who post on these forums went to college and actually paid attention in class then maybe we wouldn't be in such a dire state. Also, how can you post on a news forum and be so utterly misinformed?
Also to all the "hardwork, rah rah" people out there – Jobs came up with the ideas for the iPod, Apple computers, iPhone, Pixar…I believe that is more valuable then writing a portion of code for one application or doing some marketing research. That's why he is a billionare and not hoemless.
I can't believe that people still are trying to argue this insane point "Because you can pay more means you should" (regarding taxes).
Jobs is clearly a brilliant man, he started Apple and he started Pixar. Those companies have made people, shareholders I mean, billions of dollars worth of money. He should be compensated as such and taxed at a fair rate – 39.5% for all earnings over 250k is therate he will pay.
People really need to stop trying to get the richest Americans to pay for everything. The framework to be successful is there. Do some research and try it, there is no law that says you can try to get rich.
anybody remember "Pirates of the Silicon Valley"..everybody has stolen from somebody and making money and we are even stupid to make them richer.
I love the haters lol, they think they are some how entitled to a rich persons money just because they are rich, make your own money and stop living of of theirs
Federal Reserve statistics show that 20% of the wealth was in the hands of the top 1% in 1979 and that the same 1% held 37% in 1997. After the tax-cuts-for-the-rich orgy of the Bush years, what is the percentage now? 42%? 45%? 50%?
"In a 2004 paper presented to the American Statistical Association, IRS economists Michael Strudler and Tom Petska calculated percentiles data that included both income taxes and Social Security taxes. In 1999, the top 1 percent paid 23.3 percent of combined payroll and income taxes, the top 10 percent paid 52.2 percent, and the top 20 percent paid 68.2 percent."

It's not crime to be misinformed. It is a crime to spout your inaccurate nonsense and attempt to pass it off as fact. While the top wage earners do pay a larger percentage of the tax, there is a reason for this: They also make a ridiculous amount more than the "average" tax payer. They should pay more; if only because they make more and taxes are percentage based. Unfortunately; this doesn't take into account the myriad of loopholes the top 10% of wage earners can use to lower their tax burden; but that's another topic altogether.
Steve Jobs is rich and I have an ipod nano that is a piece of junk and I can't do anything about it. What a joke.
Good for Steve Jobs. To all the haters out there, it sucks that you've fallen on hard times, but no need to rag on Steve, Bill, Warren, and the lot for being smart and good at what they do. Don't forget – the taxes they pay help subsidize unemployment / medicare / SS / etc.; without people like Steve Jobs, these programs might not have the funding they need to reach deep into this country.
Apple is (and always has been) a great example of how to do things right. Their equipment is well thought out, intuitive to a fault, and reliable. They don't tend to rush everything to market just to be on top of the sales charts. Their products work right out of the box as advertised, and if you have a problem with your purchase, their customer service is TOP NOTCH—they fix it or replace it, without a bunch of blame laying and rigmarole! Expensive? Not if you consider all the problems with too many Windows machines! The other PC companies seem to have one purpose—get your money and then you're left you standing out in the cold if you have a problem!
The bottom line is Steve Jobs' and Apple's integrity as a business is way above the others. Wall Street and the entire banking community could take a real valuable lesson from Apple on how it treats its customers—good business is as simple as that!
The UGLY side of America? Try and understand this….1% of the people (aka wealthy) pay 95% of the taxes in this country. Get a job and stop trying to get money for nothing.
NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING will EVER fix this economy, NO stimulus, NO tax break, NO raising taxes, NOTHING will fix this economy UNLESS the JOBS either COME back, or MORE i mean MANY MORE jobs are created… Without more jobs adding more people thus adding more money to the tax base.. LESS people working HARDER will be PAYING MORE and nothing will ever be fixed.. I Can't ,for the life of me, see why politicians, the president, etc DON'T SEE (OR don't want to see this CONNECTION.. but whats the goverment solution.. PRINT MORE MONEY(soon, if not already, the money will be worthless), soon it'll take 2 wheel barrels full of money for one loaf of bread, and (for the people that get this reference) that'll be when the real interesting stuff starts happening..
Couldn't care less about how much more richer this guy is today when the rest of country is struggling to put food on their tables, pay rent/mortgate, and keep their jobs.
2 important points:
1. People who believe that rich people are 'stealing' or taking a larger portion of the pie, this leaving them with less is missing a big point… When innovation comes about, it increases the size of the pie, allowing us to get more for less. Because of innovation we have cars that can run for longer with less gas because of a computer chip.
2. Just because someone is 'worth' that amount of money, the money is still in the market place. In this case he owns shares of Apple and Disney – therefore his money is in the companies. Not in a shed with a lock so others can't use it. Money is recycled and promotes other business, employment, etc.
Apple just announced earnings and just refreshed it's product line. Competitors attacked the iPhone with the DROID, and THIS is all you can find to write about???????
ex ped: You must be new here, Bud. I covered all those things.
The wealthy and corporate America ARE responsible for the economic collapse!!!
The wealthy are black-hearted and greedy and do not deserve a penny of what they have!!!
Just 1% of the nation holds the majority of the wealth while the people really doing ALL of the work are poor and struggling to survive!
Just because someone is poor Does Not mean they are lazy and anyone who thinks so are black-hearted, hateful, non-humans!!!
The wealthy and corporate America have what they do because of OUR work!!!
I am ashamed of my fellow Americans that think wealth and being a 'SHEEP', bah…bah…bah, means you are superior to anyone else…you are the UGLY side of America!!!
News flash to all the left wing, lineral deomcrats who are trying to destroy this great country: GET A JOB. This great country provides opportunities to better yourself, earn a living, buy a house and live the American dream. The liberal democrats are trying to turn our great country into the land of handouts, welfare, free housing and all to lazy people who sit at home watch TV and stuff their faces. Then they try and sue Mc D's or the food companies because they are fat. If you want to make $$$ like Steve Jobs WORK FOR IT. These comments are from a small business owner who works for his money, employs hard working people and is being crucified by the Obamacrats because I make a comfortable living. Do not try and redistribute my wealth to fat, lazy people who want everything brought to them….GO GET A JOB.
Why does everyone get mad at the rich? I'm middle class and I don't feel robbed by the wealthy. I went to college, got a good job, and pay my own way through life. No one owes me a nicer car/house/TV, etc. If I want things, I work, save, and buy. If you want something, work for it. Keep your lazy hands out of my pockets.
"Sigh just another scumbag rich person. That money should be given back to the taxpayers of this country."
Yeah, because I, uh, remember, uh, Apple getting a government bailout. Steve Job's money is the people's! Let's hear it for the United Socialists of Eastern France!
Listen, like it or not, Steve Jobs' blood, sweat, and tears went into making Apple and Pixar what they are today. A lot of good people helped him along the way, but it was HIS vision that got them most of the way.
As a result of his hard work, thousands of people are employed and the companies he founded are making money hand over fist. It's only right he be compensated for that.
Until you put that kind of work into something and see it succeed, don't rip on him.
And I'm not even an Apple apologist. I use HP, and, thus, Microsoft products. (Full disclosure: I do own an iPod.)
Leave Jobs alone: Thanks to him billions are earned for his company every year and he's helping keep his corner of the marketplace employed. Give him his money and stop whining.
Steve brought Apple back from the brink and steered it to what it is today. He helped make Pixar the kind of company that was the envy of the industry. This is what Steve does. His gift, so to speak. He deserves all the best!
No one here has any idea of what charitable donations Steve Jobs does or doesn't make. I have an idea that given his health situation, most of us would be surprised at the extent of his charitable work. As a teacher, I can comment on the quality of the Apple products I've used. When our school system had the bad judgement to convert to less expensive windoze machines, they removed 10 Macs from my elementary classroom and replaced them with 4 HPs. The oldest Mac was 13 years old and the newest one was 5. All were working perfectly for my 20 children. I doubt you'll find many machines running windoze that are that old. When you buy a Mac, you get what you pay for.
steve jobs draws a one dollar per year salary. his wealth is directly tied to the success of his respective companies. and not everyone has the opportunity to better themselves. just because you see it that way, doesn't necessarily mean others do. between 2002 and 2007, 1% of the population took in 50% of the income. the wealthy are stealing from the middle class and lowering everyone's quality of life.
Look at angry little Randy tilting at windmills. Just keep repeating the mantra over and over and over again, like a good little puppet…
Dear Steve,
Keeping pushin up the Mac's market share. And what the hell is Al Gore still doing on the board? I refuse to buy stock while he's still there.
Liberals always believe that the rich should give their money away to the poor. Ya'll have got to be the laziest people on the planet. Collect welfare and gripe about those who work for a living.
"Shame on Steve Jobs, he may be richer but hardly drops a penny to the poor."
It's his money he can do with it what he wants. Just because you're rich doesn't mean you have to give to the poor. In this country there's no excuse on being poor. Everyone has the opportunity to better themselves and their situation by hard work and getting an education. I have no sympathy for people who don't better themselves.
Steve Jobs DOES donate, but unlike Bill Gates, he doesn't crave the media attention of doing so. And, I guess he probably doesn't need to use that to regain popularity after releasing products that suck, either. Apple rocks!
Sigh just another scumbag rich person. That money should be given back to the taxpayers of this country.
Yes, because he works hard and is innovative and his company and members produce amazing products YOU should get his money because you are a taxpayer.
Liberal Democrat I assume.
"Shame on Steve Jobs, he may be richer but hardly drops a penny to the poor."
How do you know, John? Maybe he just doesn't advertise his charitable contributions as much as some people do.
He deserves every penny he gets. For some reason the lazy public believes rich people should give them all their money. Go get a job. This guy earned his money now you go earn yours. Nothing in life is free. Stop being lazy and blaming your problems on others.
"I like apple, and I like Steve Jobs. But this "article" is just a bunch of nonsense. I can´t beleive someone is getting paid for writing this garbage."
I can't believe they let you on this board with that name.
@ akdsjfal, LA, CA
Yeah, then in turn given to the financial institutions who really know how to put it to good use. Moron
For those concerned about Jobs' not giving away his money to the poor, consider the thousands of families who are supported and have been enriched by the company he created. Giving people a chance at well-paying employment is much better than giving handouts to the non-performers in society.
Sigh just another scumbag rich person. That money should be given back to the taxpayers of this country.
@John,
"Shame on Steve Jobs, he may be richer but hardly drops a penny to the poor."
In fact, I remember CNBC sayaing Jobs has made lots of donations.
In particular 500M to cancer research,
but he just does not like the publicity.
You got a lot of people like that who do not enjoy being publicized on their contributions.
"don't let your left hand know what your right hand does" the Book of Matthew.
Technology is for making things more effective and/or efficient. It frequently makes them smaller and yes, cheaper, but that's a side effect. As far as Mr Jobs charitable contributions, we have no way of knowing what he might be doIng anonymously, so let's not condemn the guy for getting rich by doing a great job.
As secret as Steve is, just how do you know what he does with all his money? Unlike Gates who publicizes everything he gives aways, Steve has been busy running a company that is highly profitable and not running with a company with no direction, where its stock does not move and can only copy what Apple does and have a college buddy run it.
@ John – First, how are people "stupid" for buying a quality product? It is not like we are dropping $1000 on some untested POS just because someone said it was cool. iPods, iPhones and Macs have proven time and time again that they are among the best products on the market. My $1000 investment lasts me twice as long as many peoples $700 purchase of a Dell or HP product. That is a good thing in my eyes.
Second, what company is in business to LOSE money? Of course the goal is to make big profits. Could Jobs be more philanthropic? Absolutely. Bill Gates has an edge there. But that is a personal choice and not a corporate one. Apple, as a company, is very generous. Especially in the education arena. Even if they hope students will use the donated equipment and fall in love with the Apple brand. Again, just good business sense. If a kid likes that iMac or MacBook enough to become a loyal Apple customer as they become consumers…where is the foul?
Shame on Steve Jobs, he may be richer but hardly drops a penny to the poor. I think people are just stupid to buy apple products. Technology is to make products cheaper not to make huge profits.
Congratulations to Steve Job,he deserve that for steering Apple to $200l level.
We pray for his good health and see Apple climbs to $300 by Nov once sales of iPhone begins in China and New version of Mac and magic mouse begins.

When we are young, we exchange our Health with Money, When we are old, we use money to exchange for health.
Whatever a person success is due to his hardwork putting all his life and vision on the things he or she believes.
I am proud of him that he change the lifestyle of peoples wanted to buy and use his products.
His years of sacrifice of making Apple a successful company.
