Verizon vs. AT&T: There's a map for that

UPDATE: Since this was posted, AT&T has sued Verizon in a U.S. District Court, claiming false advertising and petitioning for restraining orders that would keep this ad off the air. See here.

Borrowing a line from Apple's (AAPL) "There's an app for that" TV ad campaign, Verizon (VZ) launched a high-profile attack on rival AT&T (T) last night in the middle of Monday Night Football's Viking-Packer game.
"If you want to know why some people have spotty 3G coverage," goes the voice over, as a scruffy-looking character frowns at his iPhone. "There’s a map for that."
A YouTube version of the ad — captured, ironically, on an iPhone 3GS — is pasted below the fold.
The campaign begins at a moment of high drama in the smartphone wars. It was launched on the eve of a Tuesday morning press conference at which Verizon discussed its plans to compete against Apple with devices running Google's (GOOG) Android operating system. (See here.)
And it follows both a new wave of complaints about AT&T's sluggish service and a widely-read estimate by Morgan Stanley that if Apple were to sell the iPhone through both AT&T and Verizon, its share of the U.S. handset market could rise from less than 5% today to more than 12%. (See here.)

Seeing the minced version of the 53 page statement of Verizon. I must say, I could be on the side of Verizon
especially when the edge 2.5G of AT&T should not be really included on the map, because we are talking about 3G! not 2.5G! and the speed of EDGE vs 3G of Verizon is relatively slower

Guess what. I had an iphone and when the simultaneous email or data was received, the active phone call would terminate. All day long I would lose calls. The AT&T network is lousy. Very happy with Verizon. Now have a blackberry tour. 5,000% improvement over the iphone.
"Does anyone realize the verizon 3g is not true 3g and you can not do data and voice at the same time – so while you are on a call no emails are coming in or going out and your GPS stops loading maps… ATT as bad as people think it is has simultaneous data and voice." Your a dumbass true just means that you have data which include 1xrtt and edge. Not to mention that Verizon does offer simultaneous data and voice now look at the specs on the storm 2
CDMA at Sprint and Verizon.
CDMA network is also big in India and China.
Sprint pricing and network offers the best value. Sprint has 4G network. VZ/ATT has no 4G network at all right now.
Go Sprint
Sprint sucks and Verizon is has 4g its call LTE which they are beta testing in markets much like sprint and its 4g. and finally the iphone isnt going to ever be offered on any cdma carrier apple has already said they do not see a future in this technology
We all know that AT&T service is now on a plummet but we also need to settle the facts first and see the side of AT&.
Updates: ATT had recently released a statement why they are suing Verizon. May the "there's a misinterpretaion for that that” image help you to understand better why AT&T is having a boiling-point over the matter.
detailed sources: There's a misinterpretation for that: AT&T Explains it all
Hint: The conflict is about not including AT&T’s Zedge 2.5G on the picture
Flame-on!
I don't know about Verizon, but I have an iphone and know about AT&T coverage much to my chagrin. I live in densely populated Ct and can watch my phone go from 0 bars to 3 bars and back again! Phone calls are a hit-and-miss affair. Despite the claims that ATT covers populated areas, one of their dead zones is 8th ave and 42nd st in Manhattan. If you stand outside the Port Authority you get no internet connectivity! I have completely given up on using an iphone in a moving car. Every call is dropped! I am counting the months until I can terminate my contract.
I'd say Bo didn't really read John's comment at all. Otherwise, you would have seen the sentence that followed "Kansas farmland" and realized, "oh, he isn't belittling us at all. he's just talking about spotty At&t coverage."
"but think about this… what if you were on the road traveling and had a break down? that Kansas farmland service might be nice…"
ps. When I was passing through rural Kansas, my Verizon phone worked just fine.
CDMA at Sprint and Verizon.

Go Sprint
To Rob in California – Whether Kansas farmland has 3G or not is of big concern to those of us who live out here in Kansas farmland. Believe it or not, we need things like that for personal and business use just as much as you do. We ARE actually civilized and modern out here so you can stop belittling those of us who live in rural America. P.S. There is not a single carrier that offers coverage in my town.
You can really fight any side of any arguement. Personally i am a Verizon user, i am very happy with their service, i have many family members with AT&T. My father even works for AT&T… i have tried to be a fan of their service (especially since its 50% off), truely i have, but in my experience its been 2nd rate. They seem to have alot of issues with coverage in places and situations that i wouldnt even think about having an issue with a phone. They live in a major city and still often have "sketchy" service… some ppl dont care if they have service in say "Kansas farmland" but think about this… what if you were on the road traveling and had a break down? that Kansas farmland service might be nice… in a city, you can simply walk to a phone. as far as the VZW 3g not being real 3g… i cant say i have had had the urge to send an email in the middle of a conversation with someone else, so that feature is not that important to me. i still have weather, email, texting, the internet, all at my finger tips… and i dont have to hang around the local Starbucks to get it. seconds are not critical when someone is emailing someone else…. 99% of the time. this is all just my opinion though. you are are free to have your own.
Does anyone realize the verizon 3g is not true 3g and you can not do data and voice at the same time – so while you are on a call no emails are coming in or going out and your GPS stops loading maps… ATT as bad as people think it is has simultaneous data and voice.
Everywhere I've been the past year, I've had 3g coverage with AT&T. It might be 5x by land area, but what about population? It probably only matters to a small % of people in the sparsely populated areas. Even if you were visiting one of those areas – it's not going to be a huge sacrifice to temporarily use the edge network on AT&T. I'd go with whoever has the better phone and cheapest plan.
Gee, all of these problems of no serivce? I live in the L.A. area an have 3G where ever I go and on top of that that there are many wifi spots that are free to jump on at anytime. If you lookat the ATT map it covers the most populated areas. Whether Kansas farmland has 3G or not is really of littel concern to me.
Jesse,
I'm only slightly sorry to burst your bubble. There would be no data usage apocolypse. First, the iPhone's main strengths (a massive catalog of apps and ease of access to said apps plus an easy-to-use interface) cannot be overcome over night. It… Would… Not… Crash. And that fanciful bit about "narrow[ing] coverage to keep the system from overloading."?!?! This is the internet!!! You're never going to be able to get away with making up idiocies like that. I'm almost speechless at such a brazen attempt to convince people of your viewpoint based on complete nonsense. It's worse than what happened last November and is still happening.
Wow, this is super funny. All of you people that are dissing on AT&T and VZW coverage need to ask yourself how long its been since you've had the other carrier. I have AT&T as well as VZW and they BOTH have spots where one works, and one does not. And to be perfectly honest, when my Blackberry Bold with AT&T is using EDGE and my Blackberry Tour with VZW is using EVDO there is a VERY minuscule difference in speed.
Imagine this, the Massive amount of current AT&T iPhone users, all of which spend ALOT of time either browsing the internet, downloading apps, STREAMING youtube, pandora, yahoo music. All of those things using ridicules amounts of data or 3G service. Now before someone responds to this saying "most phones do that!" look around at people who have iphones compared to people who don't and see what those people are doing.. iphone makes it actually useful to get on the internet, and AT&T makes it possible. Now to the point, Imagine all of those customers, using Terabytes of data every day. All switching over to verizon. It… Would… Crash… AT&Ts 3G coverage may show less on a map, only because of how many people actually use it. when more people use a tower, they have to narrow the coverage to keep the system from overloading. Verizon simply has the ability to angle their towers out more, covering a broader area. So, Moral of the story, if iphone does go CDMA, you will quickly see Verizon map shrink… and shrink.. and shrink.
For those of you that are not too sure about the Android based phones\PDA let me try to help. I have had a G1 with T-mobile for about 9 months that replaced my Blackberry. Best phone I've ever owned. Best PDA I've ever owned. I know personally people that have abandoned their IPhone for the newest G phone-none the other way around. Unlike the Iphone app store, the Android Market doesn't try to control what or who can write software for your device. Nearly every Iphone app has an Android equivalent. Since I don't trust the control freaks at Apple I doubt you will ever see me carry one of their portables.
You AT&T and iPhone fanboys are clueless. It doesn't matter that Verizon is currently CDMA. They stated 2 years ago that their 4G network would be LTE, the same type that AT&T will transition to. They already have several LTE test markets. For further proof, look here:
http://gigaom.com/2009/04/26/apple-to-verizon-can-i-hear-lte-now/
I have an iPhone and have not paid for a single app and I have about 80 of them….you can find them free in the app store if you really want a certain feature. I had Verizon before and they had really poor customer service and screwed me continually on my bill. I paid to end 3 different lines with them. AT&T doesn't have stellar customer service, either, but whenever I'm in a building, camping, or hiking somewhere, guess who has service? ME! I'm going to stick with AT&T….I thought the ad was pretty lame when I saw it….they couldn't come up with anything themselves, could they? No wonder they've just stuck with the "Can you Hear me Now?" guy for over 5 years now…..
The iPhone will never be on verizon because it is a GSM phone. Verizon uses CDMA. Just for those who think verizon will get it.
Brian,
If anyone had access to the Apple/At&T contract, we would read it and find out the actual date it ends. I do agree that the google phones cannot compete with the IPhone. There app store sucks. I do believe that verizon will have the iphone with in the next 2 years though.
News flash. The google phone sucks. So VZW adding the "GOOG" phone with the android system should not excite one single person. Ask any T-Mobile customer that has already made that mistake. And for those that think Apple is going to offer VZW a new product of any kind, your a fool and need to read the contract Apple and At&t signed. And after VZW attacks apple on the advertising front I doubt they will ever see an apple product.
I don't know what you're talking about Mike, but every single one of my apps were for free. Sure there are some for sell, but most of the ones for sell are only a dollar, and you can almost always find a free version. wow you really know about the iPhone. Why don't you get one before you talk like you know about it.
I was happy to see this ad. I use Verizon for personal cell and AT&T for business. So I continually use both in the same areas and despite how "most of the rest of the world" is on GSM, GSM just isn't that great. CDMA or variants of it have been around for over 50 years but it still works better than GSM and significantly better than TDMA. I agree with the previous poster, the mobile TV coverage is not what's being compared here – it is identical for both networks. As for what's not identical, take a look at Alaska, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Apparently AT&T hasn't heard of those states. And while the coverage maps on the ATT website say they do have some coverage in those states, what they don't tell you anymore is it's 'partner' coverage – so you're basically on digital roaming.
I do think the iPhone would sell well if updated to CDMA. However I wouldn't buy one. In fact I think the iPhone ads should be updated to say "You can pay 5 bucks for that" instead of "There's an app for that."
to the person going on about the TV Coverage.. that has NOTHING to do with the 3g.. that's MediaFLO's network.. at&t uses it too.. so that's a moot point.. if you look their mobile TV coverage is the exact same as VZW..
And about the 3g coverage, Verizon has a much, much better data network and with Android and the newer WinMo phones plus blackberries.. well honestly an iPhone is not such a compeditor anymore.. but it's for sure all at&t has left to retain customers.
I'm a long time Verizon user never had a single problem with it, no dropped calls now AT&T network wasn't ready for the millions of users who switch over that's where the drop calls will begin..
If Apple were to sell the Iphone for both networks it will come down to who will have the better service.
Verizon's service is much better than AT&T. If Verizon offered the IPhone AT&T would probably loose at least 20% of there IPhone users.I have had more dropped calls with AT&T in 5 months than I had in 5 years with verizon. If I did not love my IPhone so much I would never have switched. AT&T needs to get there act together, the service stinks!!!
Well I'm not sure how accurate that map is. I'm on AT&T and I live in one of the areas that supposedly does NOT have 3G…and I do have it. And by the way, I don't have an iPhone. Was never really all that thrilled with it. I don't really like Apple as a whole, and I guess it's because of the iPod and it's proprietory software. If I buy a device, I'd like to be able to get music from any source…not just iTunes. I don't lke my options limited when you have to pay top dollar for an item.
The comments about Cdma and iphones not working is dumb people! No one cares about 3G! Its just a tie over til 4G which is what the next Gen iphone will be and so will most game changing devices! This system is GSM based and Verizon has out bid every carrier for a "blanket" coverage. They are setting the game up for the future. Get your facts together peeps! This chess not checkers….
I waited for 2 years for Verizon to get their act together and find a competitive phone against Apple. They lost, I switched. They need better phones that aren't saddled with their ridiculous software. They are a phone commpany, not a cell manufacturer. They only add their software to disable features to charge you more per month. PLUS, my monthly payments were reduced with at&t. Verizon needs to get on the ball rather than think people should grovel at their feet.

I think at least a third of the Verizon's maybe even a 25% of 80 million people would upgrade to the Iphone if they were to sell it. 20 million Iphones sold just to Verizon customers thats not bad Posted By George Slusher, Eugene, OR: October 6, 2009 9:16 . I think that would be pretty good.
Good ad, pretty funny!
Having said that, not all 3G is the same.
Just look at Verizon's disclaimer:
These Coverage Locator maps are not a guarantee of coverage and may contain areas with no service. The maps reflect a depiction of predicted and approximate wireless coverage. The coverage areas shown do not guarantee service availability, and may include locations with limited or no coverage. Even within a coverage area, there are many factors, including customer’s equipment, terrain, proximity to buildings, foliage, and weather that may impact service. An all-digital device will not operate or be able to make 911 calls when digital service is not available. The Extended Enhanced Services Coverage Areas include networks run by other carriers; some of the coverage depicted is based on their information and public sources, and we cannot ensure its accuracy.
And, if you really want to see what Verizon's fast 3G service is, you need to look at the V CAST Mobile TV map. That paints a radically different picture:

Do not switch to Sprint. I beg you please do not. They are evil and will screw you over every chance they get. They were my first cell phone carrier and It took them exactly two weeks to mess my bill up soooo bad that they shut my phone off, called me a liar(they said that I didn't sign up on the plan I did.), and took 3 days to get the phone turned back on. They messed up on average at least once every two months, and never once offered an apology. I was happy to pay the early termination fee after just 7 months. There is a reason they are hemoraging customers. That is why they are coming out with cheaper and cheaper plans. Their call anyone unlimited plan is only for local calls(no long distance). If I were on that plan I couldn't even call a city that is 10 minutes away, because it is long distance. They are Evil, don't switch.
I use ATT in NYC. At around 12pm-2pm on weekdays, the iphone is unusable due to the high network load. That goes for data AND voice. Ironically, I got no signal when I was stuck in a bus outside ATT headquarters downtown.
@George Slusher
IF Apple were to strike a deal with Verizon, it's a simple chip change. To gain 7% more of the smartphone market, that's a small change to make. It's possible.
Apparently some readers aren't aware of (1) the rumor that Apple could be preparing a new device, whether in the form of iPhone or a netbook/tablet hybrid for Verizon, (2) The at&t + iPhone fans are the most stubborn even though they have to live through the drama of awful network coverage, (3) and the background why VZW has launched this awesome attack: the lawsuit between at&t and Verizon regarding the title of the most "reliable and/or fastest 3G network".
I don't understand why people in the comments section complain that the Apple 2.0 BLOG isn't newsworthy enough. Sure, Money & Fortune are news sites. But news comes in both the Hard and Soft variety. A BLOG is typically a Soft source of news. Less urgent. It's news to me that Verizon launched this campaign and I found it to be interesting. Is this an urgent piece? No. Is it petty? Maybe. Do I like reading this blog? Absolutely.
I can not stand AT&T because of how they bill, and the fact that that rollover stuff really does not help much because there is a limit on how many of your rollover minutes you use. I have Verizon, and I am waiting for my contract to end. They have a website that is totally incompatible with their own customer service system. I have had to call numerous times over billing errors caused by the site. Also, Verizon rapes you by charging you for every feature seperately. If Sprint were to update their networks and phones right now they would be number one because they have the best plans. I could careless about how the phone works, I just want to be able to do more with what little money I have in this economy, which Sprint caters to more than the other two. Also, current Verizon customers do not renew your contracts if you plan on using any broadband features because they are increasing the amount you pay for it and reducing the amount you can browse.
The "if" in your article should be qualified. The current Verizon network is totally, completely, and absolutely incompatible with the iPhone. It's a CDMA network that CANNOT work with the iPhone, which is GSM & HPDA, like most of the rest of the world.
Verizon has to do a major upgrade of its network before it can sell the iPhone. Apple is not about to make a CDMA version for two reasons: 1) It could be sold only in the US & Canada, maybe one or two other countries; 2) WIth the current Verizon & Sprint networks, the iPhone wouldn't be able to do voice and data at the same time. (That's a major failing of the Pre with Sprint. It may even be what finally kills the Pre, once people figure out that they can't be on a call and look up something on the Web or send someone a photo via email. They have to terminate the call, first.)
What about the coverage along major highways?
I do not go to remote towns often, but I do drive along highways from time to time.
Thanks.
Why am I reading another advertisement on a "news" site? Can you please add some sustenance to this article or call it what it is?
Like I've stated before, MESSY WRITING.

I have a storm and iPhone 3gs and the iPhone is a better device but verizons network works better I never have a dropped call with verizon and have not been in an area without 3g I have several spots were AT&T does not work and do people notice that your iPhone wil lose all bars and then all of a sudden return to normal
