Meet "the world's most annoying Web site"

Social-networking site Tagged.com has become a target of New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and the bane of a multitude of customers.

"There's a thin line between clever and stupid," went the faux maxim from Spinal Tap, yet it seems to apply pretty well to Web startups. One of the most notoriously over-the-line is the social-networking site Tagged.com, which New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo says he plans to sue for false advertising, deceptive business, and identity theft.

What makes the case timely is that many of Tagged.com's practices, like mass emails and data mining, have become commonplace among social media sites. But Tagged's aggressive combination of these digital promotions set it apart from its competitors, Cuomo charges. According to the attorney general's press release, "Consumers who visited Tagged were tricked into providing the company with access to their personal email contacts, which the company then used to send millions of promotional emails." He added: "This very virulent form of spam is the online equivalent of breaking into a home, stealing address books and sending phony mail to all of an individual's personal contacts."

In a blog post, Tagged co-founder Greg Tseng stated, "We are dismayed that Cuomo's office, which has shown itself to be fairly well-versed in the Internet, would issue an inaccurate and inflammatory accusation." Tseng denied that Tagged was trying to trick anyone and attributed the email outbreak to a faulty registration process.

Cuomo's actions follow a raft of consumer complaints about the site, whose functionality seems designed more for perpetuating itself than for offering utility to users. Time called it the world's most annoying Web site. Yet it has managed to become the third-largest social network on the Web, claiming 80 million registered users.

Tagged is one of the myriad MySpace also-rans that never achieved mainstream traction, but built a niche following. Tagged has a disproportionate share of African-American and Hispanic users, most in their 30s. Eight million users logged onto the site in June; that figure has more than doubled in the last year.

Where did this juggernaut come from? Tagged formed as a college side project of its co-founders, Harvard graduates Tseng and Johann Schleier-Smith. After snagging a $7 million investment from the Mayfield Fund in December 2005, both men took a leave of absence from their Ph.D. studies at Stanford to run the site full time.

Tagged works more or less like any other comparable site. Users create a profile, post photographs, and send messages to contacts. What differentiates it from better-known rivals, like Facebook, is the emphasis on meeting strangers rather than keeping in touch with existing friends.

A feature called MeetMe allows users to set specifications for gender, age, or location and view the results one by one, responding to the question "Are You Interested?" Two people who respond "yes" to each other's profiles become friends on the network. If this sounds like a jazzed-up version of a personals ad, that's because it is.

One feature that speaks to the flirtatious character of the network is the site's namesake, Tags, which are small user-generated graphic icons that members can select from a central library and post on one another's profiles, like dog tags.

Since other networks, notably Facebook, already have third-party applications that permit similar image sharing, it's unclear what unique value Tagged offers members once they join and build their contact list.

Earlier this year, the company started using Tags as a recruiting device. New users were encouraged to let Tagged scan their email address books and send invitations to the social network, with a few Tags attached, to their email contacts. Recipients would then have to join the network to view the images. While members had the option to select individual emails from their address book, many of them clicked to let Tagged send the recruitment message to all their contacts.

"The good news," says Tseng in a blog post, "is that more than 3 million people joined Tagged with this new process." The bad news is that many members didn't mean to send the recruitment message to everyone and claimed they'd never seen an option to say "no."

New York State law considers that omission of key information, or even insufficiently conspicuous disclosures, as "false advertising." Tagged is circulating a series of screen images showing a clear opt-in screen that users had to click through before the emails went out; Cuomo's office says the screen shots are doctored (an accusation Tagged denies).

More complicated are the charges surrounding the email, where the graphic Tags icons were described as "photos," leading recipients to assume that friends had sent them snapshots, as is common on photo-sharing sites like Flickr. Moreover, the emails appeared to be sent by the friend (and Tagged member) directly and often included the member's profile photo in the message body.

Cuomo's office charges Tagged with false advertising in its description of Tags as photographs, and identity theft in its use of members' names and images in the recruitment emails. Granted, as Tseng points out, it is "common practice of virtually all Web sites that offer an 'invite or forward to a friend' option" to use "the name and email address of the person who has chosen to forward content as the 'From' line." This includes news Web sites as well as social networks.

But Tagged's tactics went further. If an email recipient chose not to register with Tagged to view the "photos," for example, they were told with a frowning-face icon that their friend would be personally upset with them.

"Obviously, it's absurd behavior," says Eben Moglen, a technology expert and professor at Columbia Law School. But should Tagged be penalized? Given that the site has already abandoned the recruitment scheme in question, it may be a tough case for the state to win, especially since Tagged's practices overlap with those of other social-media sites. Says Moglen, "These things aren't decided by building inspectors. They depend on what the judge ate for breakfast."

Experts suggest that the case seems destined to be settled out of court. That's still a win for the attorney general, who can reap the political benefits of filing the suit. But it does serve as a reminder that in this new realm, the onus is on consumers, not the established law, to help decide what is safe, sleazy, or just plain silly online.

Hi well seems like i am experiencing a virus on my computer from tagged but not sure but everytime i go to tagged this thing pops up where is scans for viruses and they tell you to buy it and it won't allow you to go to anything on the computer not even the internet and i had to reboot my computer or it don't work then today i went to tagged again and as soon i was on there for like 5 minutes it did it again so i had to reboot my computer (erase everything off of it). but i love tagged too i just don't really wanna go on it cause i'm scared that that will pop up again. i might try one more time and if it happens again i will know for sure. and i might just quit tagged it will be hard but i don't wanna go through the whole virus thing.

It seems to me that most of these responses are a little TOO pro-Tagged in my opinion.

I started a profile on there, when it immediately bounced me to all of these different offers, "click here", "click there"–I immediately jumped out and hoped to God my online identity was not compromised.

Looks like Cuomo and the rest of his assistants don't know how the web and software industry works!! Learn the culture and how the sites operate before making accusations!

Every site has its unique workflows, it might not suite everyone and that's why they have staff to maintain and improve the website. No web site can make it right for all millions of users from the start, besides, the current way works great!

Politicians, got a few emails from people and start this whole "I care about you" craps to gain political points. We did not pay you with our tax dollars to spend time on this! Go after infomercials that are really scaming people's money!!

First of all…I can't believe you posted this for all your customers to read! How many didn't know about it and now that they know will leave your site? Second of all…I believe we are all adults and can make our own decisions and judge for ourselves what is safe, or just plain dangerous or stupid! I myself have met a wonderful man, (total stranger) who I go fishing and camping with…a great friendship! He needed a fishing buddy and I was a lonely stay at home house wife hubby on the road all week and some weekends…nothing to do. ow I go with my new friend and his 8 yr. old son. and have a good time! All innocent!

I am completely offended by the statement in this article:"Tagged has a disproportionate share of African-American and Hispanic users". I understand the topic of the article is alleged phishing scam conducted by Tagged, what point was this reference making? It seem to be only a racist and inflamitory statement that serves no purpose in the context of the article. Maha Atal, contributor has only rehashed information from weeks prior and added a his/her usless racist overtone. Not the type of jounalism you would expect from Fortune

People need to learn to look and read. I'm a tagged member and did see the option to not send to friends which I choose. Nobody received unwanted emails. I have now met some lovely people from my area who have become good friends. I don't know what the problem is to why tagged is being knocked all the time but it's rubbish. Get a life and do some charity work instead of writing this rubbish. Oh and yes I have facebook as well and get far more crap from them which is harder to opt out of than it is from Tagged.

Most politicians these days worry about issues that have nothing to do with running the country or a state. Lord have mercy are we in trouble. Get with it guys and gals and fix real problems.

Is it a scam going on for the publicity of tagged.com which they don't deserve at any cost? They use to force the user to give the access of their address book and then keep spamming the addresses in the book.

Posted By Anand, Mumbai, INDIA: August 10, 2009 9:58 AM

tagged is so much better than facebook i think, i have never had rude comments where as i have had arguments on facebook…

Posted By Anonymous: August 10, 2009 8:49 AM

Tagged is awesome, its no wonder the last 4 comments are positive. I have only been on the site for a month but I I think it is the best way to meet NEW people. There is a place for Facebook, for putting together all you old friends. Tagged is the place to go when you want to connect and meet new people either locally or all around the world. Never had a single problem with malicious emails. although I do get too many notifications, I am happy with it.

Posted By Rich, Wilmington, DE: August 10, 2009 8:48 AM

I have never signed up to tag but I am a victim of Identity theft. It was brought to my attention by a friend who was on tagged.com whether I was a member on the site, when I told them NO, I was suprised to be told that I had a profile on there because a profile with my picture was on the site. I wrote numerous times to tagged.com customer service regarding this issue and for the that fake profile page to be closed but I get the same response everytime " thank you for you email…. we will look into it". But til this day, the fake profile still exists and the only thing that changes is my photos!

This is the most retarded article I ever read

"Tagged has a disproportionate share of African-American and Hispanic users, most in their 30s"

That right there will offend people something like that will get you fired.

next tagged like other social networks give you the option to import your i.m contacts or not

and the reason your only seeing people in their 30's is because you yourself is in your 30's it's their way of preventing pedophiles/and idiots targeting teens.

next time look at both sides of the story and don't reword other articles

Posted By Clay, Thunder Bay, Ontario: August 10, 2009 5:52 AM

I am but one of the many people who have poted on here who, like me, say that Tagged is a great site. I did used to have problems with the spamming in my email until I learned you could take it off. As well as the 'Meet Me' and pets. To complain about it when you have the ability to turn it off is a very sad thing to do. You can report the sleeze bags and they will be deleted, and if they make a new account Greg deletes them again as best he can.
As for the other spamming about products and such, when reigstering on the site you may click that you do not want these things and you will not recieve them.
And identity theft happenes everywhere, even in real life. This is not Taggeds fault that some people do this as Tagged cannot control what all of it's members do.
In my opinion Tagged is the best chat site I have ever been to. Myspace gave me viruses and I don't care much for facebook. Tagged, I </3 you!

But perhaps, a little help from the dictionary will help.. You are so funny guys. Personally, I am not really addicted to Tagged.com, but I have an account in there. And I don't think it annoys me nor anybody who signed up.. Well, hope you'll find some time to check that in Webster's..

Posted By Anne S…Vanceboro NC: August 10, 2009 12:16 AM

At the risk of repeating what others have already said, I have been a member of Tagged.com for over a year. I have not had problems with identity theft. I have not had invitations sent to everyone in my email address book.

I have had my share of spammers send messages. They are easy to identify: the spammers always use poor grammar and spelling, they have not been members for any length of time, they have few friends and they want you to contact them through your IM, generally Yahoo! or MSN.

Tagged.com has a method for blocking and reporting anyone you do not want to contact you. You can set your profile to private, so only people on your friends list can view your page, just like MySpace. You can opt out of any games or Meet Me. If someone posts a comment or sends a tag you deem inappropriate, you can delete it.

I like Tagged.com because of the fact that there are few, if any children on the site. I have met many nice people on Tagged.com and I have met some not-so-nice people. The latter I have blocked from contacting me and removed from my friends. The former I keep in contact with.

I have dated a man I met on Tagged.com. Although it did not work out romantically, he and I have remained friends and talk several times a month.

I am currently dating a man I met through Tagged.com. I have met his family and friends, he is a real person.

You have to be careful in the online world, as in the real world. There are good people and bad people everywhere. Use your common sense, read the fine print and do not give any personal information to anyone and you will be fine.

It is my opinion that the ones who complain about Tagged.com are the ones who do not take the time to understand what they are doing and want someone else to blame for their poor choices.

Tagged.com is my favorite of all the social networking sites I have tried and for the record I have had as many spammers on MySpace as on Tagged.com. I deal with them the same, my profile is private, I have to approve comments others want to post on my page and I report them as spam.

Oh yes, I really trust Cuomo, the guy who single-handedly destroyed the housing market in the USA, who was behind the raping of Usenet, and who has also repeatedly attacked Facebook. He's a sue-happy sociopath who can't even choose his women correctly, being with a cook who actually hates to cook. And furthermore, the problems with spamming from Tagged didn't come from Tagged itself but from a small, select group of users who phished user information and used it for a mass mailing operation. It's not very hard to do…disguising the source of your emails is amazingly simple if you know what you're doing. As usual, reporters need to actually get their facts straight, and people need to stop being such blind, loyalist sheep to causes they know nothing about.

Well its pretty simple….if you dont like the social networks then stay out of them. Noone is forcing you to be here. It kinda sounds like someone got shot down on tagged, maybe you were just too nasty or your not a friendly kind of person that should be on Tagged. I personally think its a fun place to come and chat and play games. I chat with alot of wonderful people, and look forward to hearing from them on at least a weekly basis. Beats going to the bars and risking a DUI or a ticket because your headlight is crooked. the whole thing is personal choice, if you dont like it, stay out of it. Just like if you dont smoke…dont go to a bar that allows smoking STUPID.

It's not their fault, it is the fault of the theif. I love tagged and all my tagged friends. I have met wonderful people, and my life wouldn't be where it's at now if I hadn't met that special person on it.

I've been a member of Tagged for over 3 years now and have had no problems with them, I actually pretty much left Myspace alone because I like Tagged much better (Myspace gave my computer several viruses by the way, Tagged: none). Whatever problems there MAY be with unsolicited emails or whatnot is something that could happen with any site that you visit and really it's something many people have come to understand is part of dealing with the internet. I don't know who from Tagged personally pissed Mr. Cuomo off but this sounds like a personal matter that needs to be handled in a different way, because honestly you're not stopping people from using the site. And don't we as the users have the choice of where we want to socially network anyway?? Keep up the good work Tagged!

every other social website does it. Hes just using tagged as the sacrificial lamb. He needs to pick on myspace and facebook as well then. Give them a run for their money that tagged doesnt have. Choose a real cause Cuomo.

During the registration process, the question of sending invites to the new registree's contact list was very clear and easy to understand when i first registered in 2006. At that time, i was a new computer user, and had trouble just getting my computer on and off correctly. As I registered, i saw and used that option, so the claim by new users that they did not see the option was pure laziness on the part of the new registree, not the fault of tagged. The mayor of New York needs to get a life of his own, and leave Tagged alone. I met my love on this site, and I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks Greg, for having the forsight to start and operate this site. It is far better than Facebook, Myspace, or any other networking/social site ive ever visited. Thanks again, Vance Kilgore

I'm yet another satisfied "Tagger". I've been a member since '06, and though not immediately active on it, I started really using it around '07/'08, and I've NEVER had a bad experience with it. I remember getting the Invite from a friend who was/is a member, and I also remember the options of sending invites out by letting Tagged scan my address book. FIRST of all, you NEVER EVER let ANY site automatically have access to that information, no matter WHAT site it happens to be! I chose to opt out on that function, and to my knowledge, NONE of my e-mail addresses were used or hacked. You can trust me when I say, I know my friends, and they'd be royally p*ssed if I set up something that would steal information and/or inundate them with spams. This Cuomo person (and I use that term VERY loosely) clearly didn't bother to READ. Period. He screwed up, and is now crying damages, and is just being another sh*t-sucking lawyer, who sees an opportunity to make money by dragging a relatively successful company through the mud. I plan on offering my personal experiences using the site as support (if they CAN be used at all). The site is fun, easy to use, gives the users an opportunity to police their own site, and offers a unique way of meeting people online. IF you don't use your own damn brain in the process, it's your own fault.

I have had absolutely no issues with Tagged … I find it one of the most user friendly and better formatted sites of this kind … I am guessing that the writer of this article has had no interaction on the site or he would have sound facts to expound as it is ( at least in my personal experience ) this article is nothing but fantasy and fable. Why not make a comprehensive comparison with other sites such as MyYearbook Facebook MySpace etc. ? true journalism involves ( at least they say ) an unbiased reporting of the facts … now go learn to be a journalist !

You people need to go back to journalism school and retake your ethics course – which I assume tells you to check both sides of a story before printing bulls**t. I have been on tagged for several months now and yes it asked me for access to my email – HOWEVER – the was a nice little item on the bottom right hand side of the page that said either NO THANKS OR SKIP. If people didn't look that I would say was their own fault. How many of those people actually go through and read say your Comment Policy??!! Practically no one. So before jumping on the bandwagon and bashing something you have no knowledge in do some research!
I met my best friend on tagged and have met other really great people – yes there are some jerks, but heck I paid good money at eHarmony to meet several just like them. So get a grip and do your entire job people!

Posted By Cheryl – Toney, AL: August 9, 2009 3:37 PM

My only problem with the site is that Tagged is incredibly lax with allowing what's known as "cambots" onto their site. A real user signs up and dresses their personal page with pictures of an attractive woman, and in the biography sections give some real-looking interests (All in terrible English) and then give an instant messenger (Usually Yahoo) where other users can contact them. When you contact them, it's an automated message linking you to an adult webcam site.

The same thing goes for Tagged's rather-large "Fillipino" userbase… A good helping of the females are "camgirls", however they talk one on one with you about the service in an attempt to warm you up to it.

It's annoying that Tagged can ignore blatant pornographic activity.

Yes, there are certainly lot of scammers on tagged, and you have to be careful who you pick as your friends. One of my tagged friends just contacted all of his tagged friends and told us all that he would no longer be writing comments and such because he is having a lot of problems with scammers. Tagged…you really need to look into this. I find these kinds of people on tagged all of the time and just avoid them, but you know how the cyber world is and you need to be responsible.

Posted By dyanna San francisco, California: August 9, 2009 3:05 PM

I use Tagged every day and i have never experienced any of the problems that you discribe, in fact I have made some really good friends on there. Tagged is a life line for people like myself, i suffer from agoraphobia. Don't judge this site because a few people have a grivence with it. The majority of us love it.

Posted By Angela Nelson, Manchester, England: August 9, 2009 2:58 PM

This guy is crazy. Tagged is a really cool site, and nothing ever did anything to my email. I have really close bonds between people on there, and this new york person is freaking screwing everything up. Tagged is amazing.

Posted By Kristen, North Carolina: August 9, 2009 2:47 PM

Absolutely amazing. Did this site do something bad with young teenagers? Did someone get killed over a posting? Were youngsters preyed upon by possible child molesters? Were people scammed out of thousands of dollars? Some of these issues listed were problems on other sites….yet its tagged you're after??? Its tagged that has you writing an article? Just b/c your writing about what some lazy, nothing-better-to-do AG going after this site doesn't mean you can't do a little research to see just how horrible it is….or maybe you'll find it to be interesting and worthy as so many of us users have! And the silly complainers about spots that ask you to spend real $$$, it doesn't say "if you don't do it we'll come to your house to terminate"! Simply move on 2 one of the games, searching for "love" (all sites the same), sending emails or tags to people for birthdays or "good weekends". Really???? To so called lawmakers spending tax dollars…….GET A LIFE!

Posted By B-rad Sprfld, IL: August 9, 2009 2:27 PM

You are completely off on this one. the facts of your article and incorrect. I have no idea why you are reporting something you are not familiar wth. It's idiogracy on your part and the Attorney Generals office. The writer who first started this is a joke and has no clue what he's talking about. Talk about a waste of your time and the tax payers money. ROLFMAO on your ignorance.

I've been on tagged for a few years and have enjoyed this site. I have made alot of friends on here, and yes they were all strangers but not anymore! I am caucasian and I don't understand what having to many black or hispanic people have to do with anything?? That sounds a little racist to me. Obviously people enjoy this site as much as I do if they are the 3rd most popular?? I enjoy the tags very very much. I look forward to coming on each day to see what people send me. Thank You Tagged!

Ive never had a problem with being spammed or getting any sort of mass-emails while using Tagged. Ive been on for 3 months now and I use the site daily with no problems.

Sure, they have ads that ask for your email address or your phone number like any other site. Here's how to avoid it: don't provide that information! Any ad like that that pops up on Tagged is easily avoided.

Oh, and there are no pop-up ads on Tagged, unlike this site!!

I have been with TAGGED since 2006, it is a good site, ALL the sites on the web have problems, and I belong to them all. Give it a break and leave it alone. Find something IMPORTANT to worry about, like all the turmoil and strife happening in the world right now. Actually this just shows how stupid and petty some people are. It's the internet for cripes sake….get real!!!! Click the red X in the upper right hand corner if ya don't like TAGGED. No ONE is FORCED to go there….jus sayin!!!

Posted By Kristjan, Tallinn, Estonia: August 9, 2009 10:43 AM

I have been on Tagged for a little over a Year now and seen first hand it's Ups and Downs. No Site on the face of this Earth is going to be "Perfect". You should be running after those like Lou Dobbs whom do nothing but "Knowingly" spread False Information, Hate & Racism. It's been said already Tagged have it's Flaws like being slow Etc but it doesn't mean they don't try to fix them. Since I been with Tagged.com I can only Disagree with one thing that they do on there and that is charging real Money for fake things but hey these are not good enough reason to go after someone because you want to Get Rich by any means. There are many ways one can "Earn" their Cash and this right here is the only thing they could come up with? It's more like back to Pre-School right now. I mean come on you Guys are only giving yourself anyway here. We are the People that are on Tagged.com, We are the ones that know they are doing good and it's those like you and that Lou Dobbs Guy whom want to bring this Up Hill thing of Tagged back. I've seen this time and time again in my Human Rights Studies. And if it make you that big and bad about them, Like they always said if you can't beat them join them. To me reading all of this Nonsense about Tagged.com is like watching Lou Dobbs go on and on about Immigrants in this Country as well as "President" Obama only trying to find ways to bring out the very worst in them that he can find but never anything more. As you can tell by all the Comments including mines you have not Painted a pretty Picture for yourself here and should have just left it alone as I see it.

Clearly my question is why are they so upset over tagged? perhaps things didnt go well for them? so take it out on the site.I have fully enjoyed tagged and met many firends, other sites just haven't been, fullfilling and there are far more sites i guess smaller worth maybe could be the problem? reguardless i am certain there are other things the goverment again could be doing then having a court battle over things the consumer has choices on it is not like tagged forced any one to participate the public has the key board not tagged.

Posted By janis manitowoc wi: August 9, 2009 8:03 AM

Computer illiterate individuals who dont know that "invite your friend", enter your email address AND PASSWORD means they are going to send a message to "your friends" in your contact list asking them to join tagged need to banned from computers, especially social networks, motor vehicles, as a matter of fact banned from the public in general as EVERYTHING requires some degree of intelligence and you cant blame your own blunders on others. This is the single most stupid thing I have ever seen in my life, some people are against the concept of online social networks PERIOD…probably originated from those people…

Seriously, dude is probly mad because his wife met another man on tagged and left him. As a member of the site, I know that I dont recieve spam mail or any unwanted emails from tagged. People meet strangers all the time! how are u going to compare tagged with facebook? I associate with people I dont know on there as well as people that I do know. It's LIFE, which is full of people u dont know.. that is the most obvious fact in the world. Hey if a person doesn't like tagged delete it and forget about it, its not that hard. This lawyer or who ever is making a big "case" over nothing, if I were a judge I would throw it out. I understand the world is about making money etc.. But geesh go sew Mc Donalds for their false advertisment. Smh I can go on and on about how stupid this claim is.. but i'd rather not waste my time.

If you don't like the site, then cancel it asap and don't go back but if you still going to have a profile and b***h about it then you have no right to talk… Find a website that pleases you and leave others well enough alone. This is ridiculous…Tagged is a site that serves a purpose to many who want a way to interact with and meet new people. I am a member and have developed many close friendships and even bonds with some of the members. It is a free service, and you can opt out of the site and cancel your account any time you please. This is just another instance of a governmental body interferring with our freedoms of choice as Americans. The only freedom we have anymore is to choose to do as we are told, like good little socialists, or defy the entity and face it's rage at our belligerence, the consequences that follow, and of course the theivery of the fines demanded for our having been defiant in the face of their assumed authority to decide what we are allowed to do.

this case is about as retarded as the "blame McDonalds because i'm fat" case. to be a user on a site like Tagged.com, Myspace.com, or Facebook.com you HAVE TO READ THE FINE LINES in EVERYTHING! just because things arent in bright flashing lights for you, does not mean they were not their. and to sue someone for your ignorance is greedy and stupid. i havent been a member of tagged for long, and yes there are flaws here and there. but the website and the people are overall enjoyable and entertaining.

How about going after AmatuerMatch.com.They have paid people contact you saying they are from your state. It has come to a time in this world where someone has to do something to someone eles to fell liable and it's extreamly annoying! the only spam i've ever encountered on tagged are people asking me to join their mafias in mafia wars.

ive been on myspace, xanga, and facebook, and i can say tagged is by far the best social networking site ever.

i've made great friends all over the world (e.i. north korea, czech republic, japan, china, indonesia)…unlike myspace where its rare to find someone thats not american.

its sad that a great site is being picked on because a few people lack half a brain.

I have been a tagged user for a couple of years and i enjoy being at that site.. many of the acusations you formulate there are wrong. things dont work that way, and i have to say Tagged is better structured than many other sites. Now.. the problem is..
I m latino and that seems to be a problem.. since you wrote "Tagged has a disproportionate share of African-American and Hispanic users".. that is pretty racist.. watch what you write there.

Posted By Pat L. Antigua Guatemala.: August 8, 2009 6:38 PM

Whomever wrote this article didn't have their facts correct. The Meet Me doesn't work the way it's deplicted in the article and sending tags to people is in no way like a dog tag. I've been on the site, since the beginning of the year and haven't had any problems. Like any other online social networking site, people should be mindful of whom they reveal imformation to. Someone posted a comment about this article, saying they got their profile deleted 7 times, but they wrote they continued to post the same photos, name and information. HOW ABOUT READING THE TERMS OF SERVICE? Don't get mad because they didn't catch the nude photo on someone's profile, but someone reported you in your underwear. lol. How crazy is that? Sounds like the NY Attorney General needs to focus the attention of his office on more of the many serious problems in the Empire State!

Posted By Brian, Newark, NJ: August 8, 2009 4:39 PM

The biggest problem w/ tagg that I see is the spam and way to many scammers, other then that, just read before u click.

Posted By Anonymous: August 8, 2009 4:12 PM

I think it would be unfair not to post my comment after all the unfair accusation you have on Tagged. I agree that isn't perfect but for the purpose it has served why most people are here – it has delivered to customers as fairly as possible. I have been in and out of Tagged but still love this site. The scams are from third party users who sends to fellow users scam emails or images. so far, since i also have an account on Facebook and Myspace, Hi-Five and Yearbook, TAGGED is my favorite. it allows you to be creative and you can stick with old friends if you wish. The reason why one builds up on friends/contact is just like Facebook where -the more friends – the more chances on games offered on this site. Tagged is more interactive than other social network and you can control your preferences with the provided options – so i guess its unfair to label Tagged as annoying based on the "reasons" you have mentioned.

I have been a member of facebook and all others and i can`t see what`s so different with them and tagged.
And like pedofiles or even nude profiles can be reported so they will be deleted. Like on any normal social networks. If you don`t wanna find anything what you are accusing tagged of online :-) then dont go online. Or have a really good filter what will also block the good sites.Tagged is a nice website, Like any other sites anoyed with people who abuse such places. I don`t see false advertising or abuse/theft of identity. That only happen if people don`t read yeah. And for young people under 18 its no real problem for example i can`t just ad such as a friend because of the safety tagged probable made. So for the anoyed people go and anoy somthing else where you don`t bother millions of people. If you wanne do something about the internet work with it/for it and don`t fight against it.Whats your problem? Good day

i use tagged,i dont have a problem with it. but however ,there are some that abuse the site by putting nudes on there site. isnt one of the rues no nudes.
with that said there is an option to report a site if for some reason or other. i had to use that option twice. once when i came across some pictures posted of a female child with no shirt on. those pictures are now gone.
and another time was when i was on someones site ,and got to the bottom of it there were nudes. i had children that saw it . i didnt know that was going to be on there.but anyways, i dont get on tagged unless my kids aret home, or i get on it at night ,when they are in bed.
tagged isnt a bad site, i think they need to clean house of all the nudes that are nothing but porn. some nudes that dont show much are ok…. but there are movies and pictures of porn on some sites.
my kids are on myspace ,and facebook. i will not them on tagged because its more for adults.

As a current member of tagged let me state that if you didn't know you were going to be sending emails to everyone in your address book, then you are an idiot that can't read simple instructions. That said, tagged is a horrible website for many other reasons than that.

#1 Very young people can join tagged, as young as 13. So of course, there are pedophiles all over the website. I reported a pedo's profile once who bodly stated that she likes "young pu**y from 13 to 15 years old" and I got my account cancelled because of it. I'm not sure if the pedo's account was deleted or not.

#2 Tagged is intended to be a more adult website than myspace or the others, meaning you can post more adult photos and do more adult things. Problem is, they seem to let some people post very pornographic images and not let others post pics that are not revealing at all. I have seen many profile pics that show full nudity, I tried posting a pic of me in my underware and got my account deleted…again.

#3 Tagged will not answer any question or respond to any problem you have at all, EVER!!

#4 Don't go to tagged thinking it is a family safe website, it is basically one nipple away from being a x-rated site. If you go there and post lovely family pics of you and your kids and then get offended by someone sending dirty messages to you, you should have stuck with myspace.

#5 Tagged will delete your account at anytime for any reason and there is nothing you can do about it. I personally have had my account deleted 7 times now. Each time, i make up a new email name and come right back, posting the same pics and using the same screen name.

So yes, tagged is annoying, probably doing something illegal by spamming, and a haven for pedophiles, but, if you can manage to keep your account on there for more than a few weeks, you can meet some very nice people and make some fun friends…just like any other social networking website.

First of all, I have been using Tagged for over two years now and use it nearly everyday compared to other sites such as myspace/ facebook etc which are often at times slow.

My friends/ contacts from my e-mail have not been contacted and using MeetMe this is a way to find people whether looking for friends or for dating. Tagged caters for different needs, using the tags is also used on different sites so what makes this one any different.

My profile is set so that only my friends can view my photos and/or information meaning that i have complete control over this.

I have been on Tagged for about three years now and I have never had any more problems with Tagged, than I have with MySpace. In fact, I enjoy Tagged much better. Tagged does not have the lagging pages, like MySpace, as you open new features. I have had other sites (Hooverspot and even Facebook)send me e-mails, claiming that so-and-so wanted to be my friend or that they have invited me to join the site, and when I click to open; it automatically makes an account for me(of which I did not want). Therefore, if you are coming down on Tagged; it is likely that you need to look further into some of the other sites. You will probably find that they all have issues of some kind or another!!! I personally would elect to be on Tagged rather than any of the other sites. I don't think any of the sites are free from issues, by any means, and each one of them basically promote the same thing: meeting friends, for whatever purpose, by using whatever their specific trademark for their site is!!!!

Nothing AT ALL wrong with tagged. Alot of people would much rather choose this than facebook and MYspace etc. I find it a very excellent site. But if someone is choosing not to be too intelligent with the internet that is their problem. Who are you snot nose bald headed old grumpy geisers to say anything about an amazing website. Get a life and stop getting in ours!!!!

The fact that people are getting so bent out of shape because some article bashes a social website only proves that overgrown children with a lack of social skills join these stupid sites. The fact you take an article like this personally is a pathetic display. Turn off your computers, go outside and attempt to find a life. Pathetic…

In a democratic system like ours, just as Andrew Cuomo can claim legitimacy from the obtuses who voted for him, TAGGED can also claim legitimacy from the hundreds of thousands of satisfied members.
It is not the tactics and practices of TAGGED that should be investigated and rebuked rather it is the tactics and practices of a—oles the like of NY Attorney General Andrew Cuomo that should be questioned and the profitable motives behind them should be brought to light.

My friends on my email list don't get any spam from the site at all, because I payed attention when I signed up and read the stuff in front of my face!

I have found a few scammer's on there, reported them and nothing at all was done about it at all…I sent in proof of ISP etc. etc…yet they are still on tagged creating mayhem.

Come on tagged get a grip!

Apart from that, lets not forgetting that it is, in essence, a dating site…which the user selects friends/buddies based upon one picture. they can go to the profile page and read more…

Respect is what people want. If Tagged can't respect people to choose to send requests, not tricking them. They are in the wrong business. Tseng, learn to ask. Politely!

after reading the article & every1s comments. i just have to say tagged is great, yeah u can send emails to friends from ur email account. which like the thousands of other emails i recieve u read, accept or delete. or when ur signing up u opt out. dont see wot the big issue is. bebo & facebook have the same set up process. seems to me the judge & the writer of this article have nothing better to do than slag off a very good, professional networking site that millions of people all over the world enjoy. maybe they should sign up & use tagged for a few months before they make decisions about the site. bet they wouldnt be making these pointless comments after that & be fans like the rest of the users. congrats to the tagged team on their good work & thanx for the many hours of enjoyment & new friends i have met as a result of signing up xx

The usual CNN gathers facts from there sources and from many other sources that confirms the information they are talking about. Yet, You have getting rowdy about and ready to start a protest in here. Maybe you (those protesting) are the ones that need a chill pill and bring some facts before you come and cry that the author hurt your feelings. I tried myspace Got sick and tired of the ill behaved people in that network ontop of the spam I was getting and tracking cookies, etc. I left. I recently tried Twitter. Again, Spammed more than I can take. Not to mention my computer ran strange after going to that site. I've had an account with facebook since they where a network only available to those in colleges in universities. And the networks where divide as such. Today its all together and I've never had any problems at all. I'm siding with the author on this one.

alright, check it out. i use tagged just to meet new people. thats the whole sole purpose of it.

people do have the option to not register. and if anything, they have the choice not to log in ever.

look at the numbers. tagged is popular for a reason, so let it be. theres no use on hating something because its different.

i have no problem with tagged. i had one before i even had a myspace! and majority of the time, i'm on tagged!

this is a load of rubbish. If people bothered to look and read all of whats on their screen, there wouldn't be a problem. Its about time individuals took responsibility for their mistakes. Instead of looking for some one else to blame. typical American mentality.

While I understand what the complaint is about, to single out Tagged for adopting marketing tactics that many internet sites have been using for years, just leads me to believe that this is more than just about marketing ploys.

Tagged is a fun site for many people including myself. Admittedly, its not without its flaws, however like the net itself, its a growing experiment in progress. The site doesnt take itself to seriously and as the article stated does have itself a nice niche in the social site arena. I and many people apparently are happy to see it doing so well.

With all the things going on in the world I find it troubling that people are making such a big deal about this as if Tagged were the only company employing such practices to lure members.

i luv tagged and i am not an employee……..i have met many friends and made valuable friendships here and i have nothing negatory to say about the site…………chill, people………..and why does the article state the fact that blacks and hispanics are the majority of users? Who are the haters here??????? I cannot believe that it is 2009 and we are still so negative in our racial biases……Wake up people….We all bleed the same color……We all have feelings and wants and emotions and does it matter if it is a 'Meet and greet site?" We know this going into it if we have any sense……….

I am a Tagged member, and the only problem I have is having to delete old bulletins a couple of times before they go away for good. This is the same as any website. You got the good people who just wanna have fun, and the bad people who try to make trouble. The ones who cause trouble are deleted from the site. To reiterate a previous comment, there is real crime going on in New York and all over the US. How about gangs, illegal immigration, drugs, and the like. I suppose the attorney general thinks if we rid ourselves of Tagged, all the world evils will magically disappear along with it. Not so, sir. You need to prioritize a little better.

You know, instead of worrying about Tagged and it's misfortunes, maybe everyone, including NY and the Politicians of this country should be putting their energy into the upcoming HEALTH CARE (OBAMACARE) FARCE.. It is "EVIL." We all need to REALLY start thinking about WHAT is REALLY in the Bill.. It is scary to think that the Government will have control over who lives and who dies.. There are much more important things to worry about than TAGGED and a few problems they may have.. If you intend to go after them , you should check out the others while you are at it.. TAGGED is GREAT…… Have a great day and remember, your life may soon be in the Governments hands..Literally !!!!!!!!!

i've been a memeber of tagged for nearly 10 months now, an i've NEVER seen anything like this. i've always seen a skip thing on mine when offered that. this site has also SAVED MY BLOODY LIFE!!! QUITE LITERALLY!!! i've been suicidal off an on for a while durin te time i've been a tagged memeber, as well as before, an some of the friends i've met on this, while YES, they are strangers, have become AWSOME friends an people to vent to, an if it weren't for the meet me an such, i wouldn't have ever met them, wouldn't have any bloody friends in life that haven't turned around an stabbed me in the back an i would be 6 feet under in some cemetery somewhere. an yet, other sites, as menchioned earlier, like classmates.com, i haven't been on it in forever so excuse me if it's wrong, did lie about that. my link, if it accually works for me, i've got the curse that no matter what site i'm on it doesn't work, is tagged.com/foreva_n_bi_luv if you'd like to see who the bloody hell i am. i'm a tad young to be one of the so called "tagged employees" an it'd be really stupid to waste time comin up wit some story like this if i was. an as commmented below, i've also befriended MANY cultures around the world, an become more knowledgeable in diff cultures due to it. so howz about you do some accual research, ect., ask accual MEMBERS about this FREE site before comin up wit this waste of cyberspace. question, did you jus have a bunch of socisites in a box of some sort an pick a random one to try to bash on?? SURE AS HELL SEEMS LIKE IT BLOODY MORONS!!! an i also find it quite moronic that we MUST provide our so called "name, city an state, ect" it's quite ridiculous, who knows what's true on that? YET ANOTHER EXAMPLE of whoever wrote this's stupidity.

I've been on Tagged for over a year and, frankly, hope they get shut down. I completely quit trying to meet people on the site because the majority don't even live in the U.S.. It's all spam or friend requests from Filipino women or Nigerian scammers. I agree; Tagged will do anything to get members because more members add up to more page hits, more advertising sold and more money.
The only reason I even continue to use the site are the games I've been playing there.

But I don't see this as one of them. I have been a member for over 2 years and love the site. My only problem is that teens are now starting to get on it and tagged does not pay close enough attention even after you report a profile. I recently had to contact sheriffs office and now have an ongoing case for child pornography. Tagged could really work on this.

This is probably the most stupid thing I've ever read. I've been on tagged for almost 3 years now and have had absolutely no issues with any spam. I have met many amazing people, and had some geat debates. You can't blame a website for individuals' inability to read everything before clicking accept. You can turn off the applications you don't want to access your profile, so the statements about the "meet me" and "tags" options are pretty flawed. Also, there are many fake people on Facebook and Myspace alike, I have friends on both who have made fake accounts just to "play around". It' a freaking website, grow up a little.

I have been on tagged for a year and I enjoy it I have befriended some good people here and we have became good friends personally, I think to each its own, if you don't like social sites stay away from them. It is always a twitch in technology you find the twitch and fix it but i have had nothing but good conversation on tagged, what you don't like delete and keep it moving. Simply social sites are not for everyone, but for those of us that enjoy it don't bash us.

Posted By Jackie North Carolina: August 7, 2009 6:25 PM

I'll be honest I have a tagged page. I started it last year for the second time. Since then I have had over 14,000 views also I just broke 1000 friends.

With that being said I agree it is a very annoying website. Only reason why I still have my page is because I'm unemployed like most Americans these days so I have nothing to do other than waste time. Thats clearly why Tagged was made. Its also very sickening since half of the people you come into contact with have no interest most dont even look at the profile page they just want one thing. Its usually something sexual. Doesnt matter if you put married or not you'll still get an inbox full of annoying messages saying this and that. Then after you chew that person out they wonder what they did wrong like its not obvious enough.

I have been a member of tagged for over four years now. I have several friends who also use this site. None of us can say we have had ant of these problems as described in this article. Also, i who have to agree with the person who said that they "find your racial stereo-typing very tacky". I really do. What has a persons race have anthing to do with identity theft? Seriously. Try asking those of us who acctually USE tagged. Like I said, OVER FOUR (4) YEARS! Again, SERIOUSLY?!?!?

Posted By Jess, Wenatchee, WA: August 7, 2009 5:55 PM

Twelve comments… probably all by Tagged employees at this point. There is a reason they are going after this company because they went way over the line. A user had no way of knowing that ALL their contacts would be sent and email saying the user sent them a 'photo'. There's a reason why Time called it the most annoying website. It is.

What concerns me most is their claim to be ethical , I pointed out that one of their members was engaging in unlawful activity on their site and I needed their assistance. They ignored me. I went to court , I WON my case and the judge condemned Tagged. I told Tagged and they STILL did nothing – except to lie and insist they are "ethical" !! In my opinion they will engage in (and permit) any activity, lawful or otherwise, as long as it increases membership numbers.

I've been on tagged since May09. I've never been happier such a network. I've made "friends" with people from all around the world. I've learned alot about social behavior & about myself. Five of my family members on also on tagged, including my mother. She approves, so how bad could it be? Maybe if some had a life, they'd stop talking about ours at tagged! Come check it out…

Who ever wrote this article, needs to sit their a%& down somewhere. I have been a member of TAGGED.COM for OVER 2 years, and has had nothing but GREAT TIMES on the site :-)

I AM A MEMBER OF TAGGED AND I AM 47 AND I FEEL MAYBE YOU UPSTART NEW YORKERS NEED TO TAKE A CHILL PILL… I SAY THIS SIMPLY BECAUSE I WAS A NEW YORKER ONCE UPON A TIME….. MY SUMMARY IS LIVE AND LET LIVE …END OF COMMENT…………..

Im a tagged user and love the site and find this article to be ludicrous and of port tact. Many other sites, such as myspace, facebook, Mylife, fubar to name a few use the exact same tactics, but are not being bashed in this article. Find something intelligent to write about and stop wasting our time!!!

I tried myspace and facebook and TAGGED its the best place to meet new people and TAGGED IS THE BEST SITE EVER! I have never had a problem with the site. This article is a waste of webspace. I like to send and recieve tags from all the women on my friends list. Maybe The news should focus more on ways to legalize marijuana for the whole U.S.A. than trying to ruin a great FREE social networking site.

Tagged is a great site which I have used for several years and have made friends from all over the world. I find your racial stereo-typing very tacky as I am a white american and I have friends on Tagged of many different races. Shame on you!

What rewards will those of us duped receive? I wonder if this is why my pastor looked at me so strangely for a while!!

I've been on Tagged now for over 2 years and I love it! I've made tons of cool friends, had some really good times and dates all without sacrificing my friends email addresses and contacts. Why NOT, (as it was asked) ask more people than just those who were dissatisfied with Tagged. ANY time I had ANY kind of problem on Tagged, be it whatever, Greg was QUICK to correct it. I think that this whole thing is just BS!

I've been on Tagged for over a year and have not had one issue with spam. It is fun, I have met some great people and am not sure where all this is coming from, possibly someone who is jealous that Tagged is doing so well? I have several friends I have invited onto Tagged as well and they don't have any issues.

Posted By Voodoogirl, Modesto, CA: August 7, 2009 4:50 PM

Tagged is Awesome! Ive been on it for about 2 yrs. I like it that my friends aren't on it, unless i have invited them through a tick list…I love the little flirty winks and giving hearts. A way to show someone you like them with out throwing yourself at them. I have met a few long distance friends too. The media is a jumped up load of bull that believes the minority over the majority..As per usual…Ask the people that use it!!!

Shouldn't Mr. Andrew Cuomo be going after The criminals who make New York City a million times worst than Gotham City? I still can not name 3 sites that don't use some sort of information for something that has nothing to do with the purpose of the site. Cuomo's office should get off the INTERNET, and perhaps google a way to make New York a safer environment.

Hi,I'm 63 yrs old and this is the only web sight that I can enjoy and not get any nasty words from people.I can stay on it most of the day if I could.Lets keep Tagged going it simple is fun.

Your article is complete out of the question. Who told you? Did you invent it yourself? I am on tagged since almost 3 years now. Never had any problem. You create problems i think.

Posted By roger wout, Antwerp, Belgium: August 7, 2009 4:30 PM

Maybe New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo should join Tagged. Would give him something a lil more productive to do with his time!!!

Posted By Karen, Balto, MD: August 7, 2009 4:04 PM

i like tagged better than myspace or other sites i've used. buzz off ~

Posted By lee garrett, calhoun, georgia: August 7, 2009 3:35 PM

if Cuomo is going after Tagged then he should be padlocking the doors of Spacelocker (unfortunately they're not US-based). Tagged was aggressive but no more so than dozens of other services, and unlike other services they acknowledged the mistake and fixed it. Shouldn't that be the goal of any investigation anyway?
Cuomo is grandstanding and going after votes from young social media savvy constituents.

This is stupid.

Posted By Britany, Milwaukee WI: August 7, 2009 3:20 PM

This article is ridiculous!!! I have been on tagged for 1 1/2 years and have had nothing but positive experiences!! I have connected with old friends and have made new friends also. Maybe you should do more research and contact the people who actually use the site before printing something like this!

I've been on Tagged for about a year now and have had lots of fun with it. I read the screens during sign-up and chose to NOT have my contacts harvested. Most sites of this ilk to that and anyone who is fooled into letting them do it must be a rank n00b to the Internet, particularly given that you have to provide the account information and password to your e-mail account(s) for them to do this.

It's a fun and free site to meet folks and you have total control over who can see your profile just as with similar sites. It sure beats the hell out of shelling out $30 a month for the paid dating sites and I've had better luck on Tagged than the pay sites to boot. What's not to like?

My only gripe is that they are slow to drop pornographic content from some members, and the "report" feature is currently broken. Beyond that, I'm happy with it.

Well I don't have a problem with Tagged! I love it!!!!!!! SO leave it alone

Posted By Kathy Smith CA: August 7, 2009 2:51 PM

it's not tagged.com's fault that people are ignorant.

Posted By Savannah, Atlanta, GA: August 7, 2009 2:36 PM

This was all reported a month ago, does Fortune actually publish any NEWS anymore?

Posted By Jim, Redwood City, CA: August 7, 2009 1:42 PM

ummm, facebook has similar practices of accessing your outlook email lists from your hard drive and webmail accounts (hotmail, gmail, etc) so wtf?

Posted By Chuck, Edgewater, NJ: August 7, 2009 1:32 PM

or how about the well known http://www.classmates.com site who sends you an email that says that "somebody" either visited your profile or signed your book. Upon logging in to check who it may be, you find out it is a shill, a fake account or a real account that didn't visit your account or sign your book.

Sounds like the same tactics as MyLife, formerly reunion.com. Prosecute them too as they knowingly send invitations to people who have opted out of receiving them.
