The iPhone 3GS stripped bare in Paris

iphone-3g-s-board-clips1More than 12 hours before Apple (AAPL) began selling the new iPhone in the United States, a team from RapidRepair had already picked up an iPhone 3GS in France and begun to tear it apart.

The Kalamazoo, Mich., electronics repair shop took advantage of the fact that a Parisian Orange Boutique was hosting a midnight (6 p.m. EDT) iPhone release event and flew CEO Aaron Vronko to the City of Lights to buy one of the first.

You can view the step by step disassembly — with helpful hints for how to do it yourself  (while voiding your warranty)– at their website. If you are very careful, the end result looks something like this:

Below the fold, a side-by-side comparison of two motherboards: the 3GS  and the 3G, with Rapid Repair's analysis of the new chipset.

So why is everyone still buying the iphone over the g1?

Have you seen Google docs, news, reader, shopping, images, video, blogger or picasa on iphone? Yet I don't hear you reaping on jesus phone…

There IS built-in video playback/recording, onscreen keyboard, you can type in both portrait and landscape. And if someone cant figure out how to use – they need to go back to grade school, I did not even open manual once, something I can't say about iphone.

Lack of built-in storage is easily compensated by removable microSD cards (32 gigs for under $50), I have yet to see how you can expand storage on iphone. Microphone quality is just fine, at least I don't hear myself talking like I did on iphone.

In the end… you're saying that iphone is better because it has 3.5 mm jack? That is sad….

Back to the article: it's always nice to see someone take apart $700 toy, I would not attempt to do it myself of course.

T Mobile G1? You've got to be kidding me. Even if it were 20 times better than the iPhone, the thing ain't selling so it's irrelevant.

But listen to these review snippets:

Limited built-in storage; headphones require adapter; sub-par microphone quality; no built-in video file playback; no visual voicemail; no onscreen keyboard, text entry only supported from landscape mode; user interface is often unintuitive, confusing.

Or…The G1 phone and the Android operating system are not finished products. There are only three working Google Apps here—Gmail, Maps and Calendar—while Google Docs, Google News, Google Reader, Google Shopping, Google Images, Google Video, Blogger and Picasa are nowhere to be found. What's the deal?

Finally…Now take the fact that nothing is seamless across even Google’s own OS applications, and let’s now throw in about 5 different form-factors, and 15 different hardware configurations, and 3 different navigational configurations. See what we’re getting at?

How in the world could someone perfect the Android experience across that broad range of hardware when even the first unit doesn’t do that?

The iPhone G3S is a 3rd generation product. The T Mobile G1 is barely out of beta according to most reviews and the sales data seem to confirm that opinion.

Thanks for the interesting pictures. Its much more safer to look at some others splitted iphone than to see your own.

Thanks Dave for the comments about the G1. Unfortunately, you failed to grasp the entire point of this article. It's a teardown piece, not a fanboy post. Be interested in the hardware and care a little less about the software that isn't mentioned once here if you're going to comment.

The T Mobile G1 is a much better phone.Ok so it’s chunkier, big deal, so the new Iphone has a compass… wow… err The G1 has had that since day one. Along with turn by turn directions. Apple has a lot of work to do. So far, I have not seen anything on the Iphone that makes me want to buy one. G1 is far superior.
