Rumor round-up: Major iPhone hardware upgrade
The pace of iPhone rumors has picked up significantly since Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 3.0 special event last week, and Monday yielded an especially rich crop.
Getting the most attention is the 10-point memo from The Boy Genius Report, a blog with unusually good sources within AT&T (T). But details are pouring in from a wide variety of unofficial outlets, sketching the outlines of what's shaping up as a major hardware upgrade — one that's perhaps even more significant than last summer's release of the iPhone 3G.
Among the details we're feeling increasingly confident about:
- It will be announced in June. A leak in early February said it would come in June. The Boy Genius says mid-June. We say June 8, unveiled perhaps by Steve Jobs himself.
- It will ship in July. As senior VP Phil Schiller told the New York Times in January (link), Apple now marches to its own seasonal product cycles, which for the past two years have included long lines forming outside Apple Stores in early July or very late June to buy the latest iPhones.
- It will offer faster Internet access. The Boy Genius hints at a doubling of download speeds (to 7.2 Mps) using a new chipset from Infineon (IFX). This follows last Friday's Silicon Alley Insider report of faster Internet access and Electronista's report that Infineon's new chipset, due in mid-2009, would support the faster speeds while also improving battery life. See AppleInsider's Prince McLean, who lays out the evolution of AT&T's 3G and 4G networks in chart form.
- It will have a new architecture. Some inspired firmware sleuthing by MacRumors last January revealed a product number — iPhone2,1 — never seen before. As AppleInsider pointed out at the time, the first and second iPhone identify themselves as iPhones 1,1 and 1,2. (link) The shift to 2,1, by Apple's product numbering conventions, suggests a major product upgrade.
- It will have a faster chipset. MacRumors reports that Apple has been buying up supplies of the new Marvell (MRVL) PXA168 ARM chip introduced in January and may have settled on it "as the heart of a future device." According to the manufacturer, the chip "delivers the processing capabilities of an entry-level laptop to instant-on, digital consumer devices by enabling full-featured web surfing, Internet widgets, multi-format video, Adobe (ADBE) Flash Lite-based content playback, image processing, video conferencing and advanced graphical user interfaces (GUIs) – at consumer price points with ultra-low power for longer battery life."
- It will be integrated with AT&T's TV services. According to The Boy Genius, it will support the U-verse protocol, which Wikipedia describes as AT&T's attempt to "leapfrog current cable television-and-internet services by offering features like a DVR that can record up to four shows at a time and is programmable from any web-connected computer." (link) In a long essay posted Tuesday in Roughly Drafted Magazine, Daniel Eran Dilger suggests that this could signal a major effort by Apple to make reinvent Apple TV as a high definition TV controller and digital video recorder running on AT&Ts expanding TV services.
- It will support more sophisticated games. The buzz at this week's Game Developers Conference in San Francisco is the challenge the iPhone — with its 6,000 games and frictionless App Store — is posing for dedicated game machines made by Microsoft (MSFT), Sony (SNE) and Nintendo. Apple's hand could be considerably strengthened if the rumored improvements in its graphics capabilities — for example, by incorporating the Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX543 chip introduced at January's Consumer Electronics Show (see here) — find their way into the new iPhone. See also the iPhone graphics round-up published last week in IntoMobile.
There's lots more where that came from. AppleInsider reports that the new iPhone will come with a built-in videocam. The Boy Genius talks about autofocus cameras, slide-out keyboards and $99 netbooks, but that's where our attention starts to wane.

Ok I'm lost… are you people really serious with the AT&T is horrible? LOL honestly what loser sacrifices their "excellent" Verizon service just for a phone? Do you take the short bus to work everday too? I've had both AT&T and Verizon and AT&T wins handsdown! My bill is only $70 a month for unlimited everything including my iPhone plan. You people need to get real… it's just cell phone service!
My wish list in new iPhone hardware :
3 meg pix camera, slightly bigger OLED screen, slightly thinner and lighter, have IR so can be use as remote control, dual core ultra low power mobile cpu.

Everyone I know love their iPhone but hate AT&T. When I bought my iPhone 11/08 I kept my Verizon account for phone service. My AT&T minutes roll over each month. Who cares! Verizon are the best! Business associates are buying the Verizon Storm but really want an iPhone. I heard Apple had signed a 5 year exclusive with AT&T. Is that correct? Is their 5 years up yet?

Wake up Apple if you are looking to sell more IPhones make on that works on the Verizon network. AT&T's network is limiting the sales of the IPhone.
I love my iPhone. When I got the new 3G a while back ago (standing in long lines) I had major issues, dropped calls after dropped calls, not seeing a 3G network) remember all of that?! Finally I took my iPhone to the apple store and they replaced it, no questions asked. Then they came out with the upgrade. Voila! I could not believe that I had full bars and I never get dropped calls anymore, ok..1 or 2 times a month in very specific places. I wish the ATT services were cheaper, including unlimited texting and early nights and weekends. I miss Verizon for this. Truth be told, VERIZON ROCKS! and if they sold an iPhone I would definately go back to them, but as it stands now, I am so happy with my iPhone that I would probably deal with some crappy issues just to have my shiny black wonderful toy.

I switched over to the iPhone back in October from Verizon. I actually had to pay the $100 to cancel the contract for my wife and I. The iPhone itself is incredible. Other than the battery life, what it can do out weighs the bad. Now, the bad….I was on the AT&T network (Cingular at the time) with the Palm 600. The coverage was HORRIBLE, dropped calls everywhere. I thought it was the phone. I then moved to Verizon and was extremely happy. Now that I am back on the AT&T network, again, dropped calls daily (Probably 6+ per day in the SF Bay Area). My bill is paid on time every month and I treat the phone with the utmost care so for those of you who are saying it is NOT the AT&T service are wrong, dead wrong. AT&T coverage is simply unreliable…..it cannot and should not be used as a business phone otherwise be aware that you will suffer embarrassment from dropped call after dropped call…….its a given.
Cellular One – GTE – Cingular – AT&T. I dropped out after Cellular One put it to me pretty hard. Yes, I would get an iPhone but for 3 reasons: the number one reason is AT&T. Number 2 is the small memory capacity of the iPod app. And number 3 is the reason I stopped buying iPod's: the refusal of Apple to offer me migration software. Even if it's only offered in Apple Stores by Apple Techs, the factory should support migration from one iPod to the next. Period.
(Stepping down off my milkcrate and turning my video iPod back on.)

Gee, Tom. N95! Really? I've got one too, and now I have an iPhone. Tell you what. Send me your address, and I'll GIVE you the Nokia. Hell, ten of the things wouldn't equal an iPhone. Get with the program????? You're kidding, right?
The guy with the Nokia just doesn't get it. The iPod is not the most powerful MP3 player and the iPhone is not the most powerful smartphone. The reason both are so successful is not the hardware sepcs. Rather, they are both successful because of the combination of hardware and software that "just works". They provide a simple yet powerful and reliable user experience.
I had a Blackberry on VZW and gave it back to my company to get an iPhone. I have never looked back. I am in NJ and have never had a problem with ATT service or customer support.

"I have a Nokia N95…"
Yes, Tom, but the iPhone is a completely different thing. See, we are talking about products that work. That actually do what they say they will do.
The reason the blackberry is huge is because, like the iphone, it WORKS. It actually does what it claims to do, and it does so reliably.
The N95 is a piece of junk. I was also fascinated by the idea, but having tried to use it several times over the past year or so, I am disgusted at how frequently it freezes, or simply cuts out in the middle of a process. Or takes so long to do something that you wish you were dead already.
The N95 receives the epic quantity of fail rating from this tech user.
Really, Really? Wow, Apple is really trying to stay behind the game. I have a Nokia N95, it came out about 2 years ago, and it has more features than the current and upcoming iphone (is this the bring 1 or 2 new features out per release game?) and 16GB… Apple! my Nokia has the micro sd chip slot. I just put a 32gb chip in there the other day…. I like your phone but please get with the program!

count me as one of the many who would have an iPhone except for the essentially mandatory AT&T contract. I am not screwing around with unlocking and worrying about software upgrades cutting me off. I had AT&T previously, and hated it, horrible customer service, just horrible. I was a long time customer, started with a company called Cellular One when cell phones were rare, they got bought by AT&T, who then got bought by I forget who, who then later bought the rest of the AT&T empire and went back to the AT&T name. So I had the same account for a long time. It was great when they told me, after one of the last mergers or name changes that I couldn't upgrade my phone, without changing my contract. This was one of many problems with the switchover, and the last, I switched to Verizon and haven't looked back. I later read that there was a class action lawsuit against AT&T for some of the very issues I had with the switchover. They lost and had to back out of some of the things they tried to get me to sign up for. There is a reason that Verizon was rated #1 in nearly every survey that Consumer Reports did a survey. AT&T is not number one in even one city. I would have bought an iPhone when they first came out, but not with AT&T.

It'll be useless for Apple to create a new iPhone that supports new games but doesn't allow the first two iPhones to play the games. Do they really think we're going to upgrade our phones just to play games?
Rob says: "If you are a business user, and want to appear professional, get 2 phones. Buy one on a real network for making phone calls and use the iPhone for managing every other digital issue in your life."
Yeah, maybe that is right on.
But we are finding that folks can get so much done with the MMS and the email and calander apps, they end up using the phone "app" less and less.
Like the voice memo app, it has largely replaced the phone app. Site guys generally hate ringing the office, cause they mostly get asked to leave a mesage anyways. and the voice memo app means that they can send a pre recorded message without having to ring or talk to anyone.
So maybe the new iphone functions will sort of replace the "phone" part of the phone.

Yeah, it works fine on my old 3g iphone.
It has some features that are saving me major software development, straight away. For example, there is a "voice memo" application. You press the ap button, then you press the record button. Then you speak your message. Then you press "send", and type the first letter, and pick the recipient from your address book. And you're done. It emails the voice memo.
You can now do the same with photos and notes. But the thing is, because it links in with the email ap, that means my clients can now issue iphone to guys working on site, and they can send voice memos to head office in very few steps. We have a real problem getting site guys to use any kind of software, no matter how simple. This one app allows us to link all our site guys who hate tech into the email system at head office.
And there are similar advantages with the calendar app, now it takes caldav protocol. Everything the office guys do on their calendars, on whatever platform, these can be pushed straight to the site guys.
And the new software also allows the iphone to sync and talk to each other over bluetooth, without any input from the user. So if you have the manager visiting various sites, he can sync up with all the notes, new contact, voice memos and photos just by standing around next to the guys on site.
It is very awesome, straight out of the box. All that has to be done is to set the units (sorry, "iphones") up to the server, and issue them to the site guys. And you can lock and brick them remotely if they go awol.
The MMS is also very, very useful, especially with the cut and paste functionality. You can now cut and paste HTML from web pages, or text from emails, and send it via MMS. They really got the cut and paste thing right. It is easy to use, and so useful that I can;t believe they never had it before.
Another very useful thing is that spotlight is now on the iphone. Again, I don;t know how I ever liked the thing before it had this.
I think maybe the blackberry is toast, unless those folks can get their software and server systems up to a new level. And I am not a blackberry hater, either. It is just a question of ease of use, and the way the iphone intergrates with office based software.

The worst thing about owning the iPhone is the AT&T wireless network. Daily my calls are dropped on major highways throughout San Diego.
Ultimately, a mobile phone's quality boils down to the ability to make and sustain voice communications over a wireless network. On that basic requirement, AT&T makes two tin cans and a string work better than the iPhone for it's primary purpose; phone calls.
The iPhone is light years ahead in usability, convenience, and proximity to the grand unified media device. Hopefully a decision maker at Apple will realize that a quality device deserves at least a second rate wireless network.
If you are a business user, and want to appear professional, get 2 phones. Buy one on a real network for making phone calls and use the iPhone for managing every other digital issue in your life.
If At&t is the reason so many people avoid the Iphone, just drop your contract and unlock it. Mine works great on a Tmobile prepaid.

Cynik – is this on the software side, or just the hardware? In other words, can I upgrade the iPhone 3G I just bought to the SDK stuff you are describing?
ex ped: Yes, Apple says all iPhone 3.0 improvements run on iPhone 3Gs.

I'm a developer who mostly programs for macs. I gave up on the iphone in disgust last year, because being locked into one carrier in Europe mean you pay 500 bucks a month in roaming fees … if you use your phone and you move around.
Anyway, I have been playing with the new SDK for the iPhone, the 3.0 thing.
Wow. Absolutely amazing. Like I say, i gave up the iphone last year. It was cool, but it had serious shortcomings. It couldn't tether, had no search, couldn't cut and paste etc etc. Couldn't do Caldav. It was basically an expensive, but very cool, toy.
However, this next generation of device is very much a computer you can put in your pocket. I am seriously excited to be programming for it. Now forget all that app store rubbish. A hundred applications that tell you if it is sunny outside, so you don;t have to look out the window. No, the new SDK is going to have business people looking at this device in a serious way. It can do things other smart phones can't even begin to think about.
I just bought my first iPhone on Sunday, and now I hear about the new hardware upgrade coming in a couple months. Should I return this one and wait for the better version? Does anyone have a guess at the introductory price?

Cut and Paste has already been announced with the new Apple iPhone firmware update. So yes, this new phone will have it.
I live on Cape Cod and switched to AT&T to get the iPhone. I'm not disappointed. Verizon was not getting it done in my area for coverage. AT&T has been great so far and I absolutely love the phone. Yes, I would like a few more features, but I understand with 3.0 coming, that should satisfy me for a while.
I loooooove my iPhone, but I am so frustrated by AT&T's horrible coverage of the L.A. area.
AT&T needs to figure it out, or once we can switch we'll be jumping ship at the same time and AT&T will be screwed.
I would give my right gonad to have an iPhone in my hands right now but, like quite a few others, my issue is with AT&T. Plan price doesn't concern me as it would be a business expense. But coverage is a HUGE issue in Los Angeles when it comes to them. Moving from the east coast with AT&T as my cellular provider resulted in my switching to another provider in less than a month. Thus far, at least as far as reports from people I know, it hasn't improved enough for me to make the switch back yet. It certainly would be more convenient since I was finally able to not drink from the glass of Microsoft Kool-aid. Replacing a desktop and laptop with an iMac and a MBP has made a incredible difference in keeping my information centrally located and accessible… with the missing link being the iPhone. I'm not a FanBoy or a techie but the difference is rather incredible as far as an everyday consumer goes. I really do hope AT&T improves in my locale long before 2010, that would make as happy as a pig in… well, you know.

The amazing thing about the iphone is it's ability to install features it did not have at launch. It evolves. You feel like you have a new phone when a major software update is released. There are three MAJOR hardware upgrades this needs (in no particular order) A camera that can take better pictures, one that can record good video, and something quite amazing…. and infrared ability. If Apple installed infrared ability, all those TV applications could easily be coded to change your channels, and take the place of a universal adapter.

I have been nothing but happy with AT&T! I switched from Verizon to get the new iphone when it was released almost 2 years ago. I have been nothing but happy with my new service. I get good coverage and good customer care. Those who complain.. prob. didnt pay thier bill or dropped thier cell in a pool and expect AT&T to pick up the tab.

MMS is supported with the new firmware upgrade….people read up on your sources before you make some lame post…better yet, stick to your crapberry.
How about being able to turn it horizontal and type so the keyboard is larger? That one should be a give-in…and Flash of course and other video streams.

actually AT&T is still going to be the exclusive carrier here in the US – but you will be able to pay more to not have to commit to a 2 year contract, which in turn will let people unlock them.

Wow, so many AT&T haters yet AT&T continues to be one of the "most trusted companies" in America. It reminds me of the AT&T haters back in the 1990s who loathed doing business with AT&T and preferred MCI/Worldcom and what happened with MCI/Worldcom?? Can we say something scandal with Enron. All carriers have their coverage and customer service issues, let's be realistic here!
Branson, the iPhone and iPod Touch are the only Apple devices to not support WiFi-N. All laptops and desktops have it, even Apple TV. But you wouldn't know that because you never even bothered to look. And FWIW there's no WiFi N on Blackberry or Palm. Your argument is an epic failure.
To Bob P., rumor is that AT&T will be selling iPhones not tied to the AT&T service. But those phones are going to sell at considerably higher prices ($599).

so long as it's only avail on AT&T, i'm not getting one. sorry, the new toy niftiness doesn't out weigh the sloppy coverage, poor customer service and billing ineptitude of AT&T.

Wi-Fi N? Every vendor has their own flavor of N so it should come as no surprise about the compatibility issues. N just hasn't been adopted for the most part due to that issue.
The only improvement Apple can make on the iphone is moving it from AT&T. That is the only reason I do not own one.
As of right now Apple and AT&T are tied till 2010 I believe. It was just extended last year. No word on after 2010 though.
Faster internet access? Only if AT&T impoves on their network and 3G coverage. This point really has nothing to do with the phone itself.
WHAT ABOUT COMPATIBILITY WITH WI-FI "N" service??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? What the heck is wrong with companies like Apple not adopting the N Wi-Fi protocol. My entire home is N and N only!!!!!!! Many offices do the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Improvements on iPhone are obvious. Faster Internet, better camera resolution, and so forth.
Slide out keyboard? I guess not. The multi-touch screen is what makes iPhone the iPhone…
I believe SJ will be back and will pull out more out of his sleeves: a larger iPod touch type of tablet.
The real question for me is not the improvements planned for the iphone, but when it will be available for use on a non-AT&T service. Is there any news on Apple extending the exclusive contract with AT&T?

O2 in the uk, who have the apple iphone contract have employed marketing folk on something called operation charlie. Which i hear from reliable sources is tv related. this i think means new iphone adverts plus maybe they too are looking at the idea of tv to phone. Interestingly another blog elsewhere notes that operation charlie is listed as having 3 elements, which also backs up the idea that there will be iphone options.
