Major iPhone OS upgrade coming this summer
Apple (AAPL) unveiled a slew of new features — more than 100 in all — in the third major revision of the iPhone's basic operating system. Among the enhancements demonstrated at a special media event at the company's Cupertino headquarters on Tuesday were many of the functions users had been clamoring for — in some cases for nearly two years. Among the highlights:
- Cut, copy and paste across applications
- So-called "push notification" — for example, of breaking news or sports results
- Multimedia messaging service (MMS) for sending pictures or voice memos in instant messages
- Landscape viewing when the iPhone is turned sideways in the major applications, including Mail
- The ability to search Mail, Calendar and other Apple applications for key words
- Improved calendar functions
- Stereo Bluetooth for wireless earphones
And much more. At the end of the 90 minute presentation, senior vice president Scott Forstall (who stood in for the ailing Steve Jobs) was rattling off features faster than reporters could type: Notes Sync, audio/video tags, live streaming, shake to shuffle, Wi-Fi auto login, Stereo Bluetooth, LDAP, iTunes account creation, YouTube ratings, anti-phishing, call log, parental controls, media ccrubber, OTA profiles, VPN on demand, languages, YouTube subscriptions, YouTube accounts, encrypted profiles, auto-fills…
"Many minor features add up to a major change," was Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster's take-away message.
Apple also announced a raft of improvements — including more than 1,000 new APIs (application programming interfaces) — in the so-called SDK (software development kit) that programmers use to create applications for the iPhone and the iPod touch. Chief among them:
- Peer to peer connectivity (through Bluetooth) to allow multiplayer games with people in close proximity
- Support for turn-by-turn navigation and other sophisticated map applications
- A subscription model that allows micropayments by the item ($9.95 for an electronic book, say, or a more $0.99 for a more powerful weapon in a shooting game)
- The ability to interact with hardware accessories such as speakers or glucose monitoring kits
A beta (preliminary) version of new SDK is available to developers for free download today.
iPhone 3.0 with all the added end-user features won't be available until sometime this summer. It will be free to owners of existing iPhones and will cost $9.95 for the iPod touch. Some of the new functions — for example stereo Bluetooth and MMS — won't work on the first generation phones.
Apple also announced some App Store milestones:
- 25,000 apps available for download (the actual figure is now more than 28,000)
- 800 million apps downloaded
- 17 million iPhones sold through Dec. 2008
- 13 million iPod touches (for a total installed base of more than 30 million App Store-ready devices)
- 800,000 downloads of the original SDK
- 50,000 developers — 62% of them new to Apple
- 96% of apps submitted in February were approved — 98% within seven days — but still not fast enough to satisfy some developers
One user request that wasn't addressed was support for Adobe Flash, the widely used standard for online video and other multimedia files. Asked in a Q&A what Apple planned to do about Flash, Forstall ducked the question. "We have no announcements on that topic today," he said, suggesting that there were other ways to send video to mobile devices.
See Jon Fortt's Big Tech here for a live blog of the event. Apple's press release is available here.
Apple closed Tuesday $99.66, up 4.4% for the day. The stock has gained $16.55 a share in just over two weeks.

There are an awful lot of people that bash the iPhone. Of course the obvious reasons are for the extended lack of MMS and the copy and paste feature [which is a big "Thank God" feature for me]
Other than that it's miles ahead of other phones. There's still only a handful of phones with downloadable apps and Apple now has almost 30,000!
And like others have mentioned, I failed to see that I'll have to pay for the update. I have an iPhone therefore I get it free. If you buy and iPhone after it releases then it'll come with it. And if you have an iPod Touch then you should have to pay for it anyways. Besides that, it'd only be $10.00 and I can easily spend that much on apps in a week if I want.
I just looked at the N97 too. It looks somewhat impressive but considering it retails for $699 [not including any discounts] is a little extreme considering the iPhone was only $400-500 if I recall correctly.
I'm not saying that it's a bad phone but maybe it's a bit overpriced for what it offers. I can almost guarantee that any software updates won't be free.
The same can be said of Windows phones too. Microsoft wouldn't let you have their snot rags for free, much less a firmware update haha.
Looks like Dan from cleveland is too broke to afford a Iphone.. plus too ignorant to learn and write proper english..
may be dan, you should go for a pager.
Why are there all these people getting so angry about a handheld device? I have an iPhone and I use Apple computers for home and work. I use them because I like the OS and design of the products. Its that simple. Sure there were some basic phone features that were left out of the os on the iPhone, but Apple are catching up with the new update. If you don't like one product, you have the choice to buy another. Some people here need to get out more!
Hey Randy in Boca Raton,
If you read the article again, it mentions that the new upgrade is FREE for current iphone users. I bought mine last September and have not had to pay for anything since. Clearly you don't have the slightest idea at how amazing these phones are. You're completely ignorant on the subject; therefore shouldn't post. I have no complaints about the phone as it is. The fact that they're adding these extra features are just wonderful bonuses to an already great phone! Nothing rivals the iphone.
The fact that dan said "I can find, have found, and can find" makes him look that much smarter…. He basically said the same thing twice and then made it past tense and stuck it in the middle
Dan from Cleveland, and I quote"2). I have ATT and just bought a new phone. Samsung Eternity. Like it MUCH better then I did my ipod touch"
If I'm reading this correctly you previously used your ipod touch as a phone? Listen "son" it does not take forever to sync, it takes a while to back up, and clearly its not itunes, your computer is shit. Also the ipod touch does not have everything the iphone has because you can't access the net from anywhere you want, and trust, that changes a lot. On top of that, please name one phone that I could buy that would give me the selection of software that the app store offers. And how the hell did you get to talking about apple's desktops? which by the way is one word idiot, educate yourself. Lastly "son", a piece of advice, go back to school, get off your "I CAN WRITE IN CAPS WHICH MAKES ME SOUND IMPORTANT TRAIN" because everybody hates caps, thats soooo…"2004 technoligy" as you put it? Please learn to spell, or at least write your post in a word processor and then copy paste it so you don't look like a total idiot. Oh and what is a fan boy? I'll bet you don't even know what fan is short for…go to sleep.
lol gave up the iPhone for the Eternity? I started with the Eternity, switched to the iPhone after a week, and haven't looked back since. Honestly, after owning my iPhone for months and months, it blows the Eternity away. I'm sorry you hate Apple so much that you're willing to lie =] and PS – if iTunes is loading SO slow, get a comp that's not outdated
Hey Dan from Cleveland: you'd look slightly less stupid calling people idiots if you knew the difference between "your" and "you're." Just saying.
“Soon the iPhone will have all the features of my Windows Mobile 5.0 phone.”
Wow, including total market failure? Impressive
** 1a). your uninformed and STUPID for not being informed. **
The word is "you're," moron. I think that pretty much sums you up.
I still can't get over the fact that all you people would spend so much money for a phone that would be out of date in 6 months. And then spend more money to get the second generation phone. Then have to wait a year and be forced to spend more money again, plus the time and effort to get features that should have been on the phone originally. Let me know what you guys would like to have next, I'll be happy to sell it to you in stages and keep charging you more and more for it!
I find it hard to believe this technology wasn't there for the iPhone 3G or Apple "forgot" to include those features like flash, video cam, cut and paste etc. Just a money grab by Apple because they know there are idiots out there who will upgrade their iPhones that are only a year old!!!
support for Adobe Flash
better battery life
louder volume for speaker phone
(stock market technical charting App. with candlesick charts)
a good remote desktop App for windows (for home eddition)
be able to create your own ringtones
Dan from Cleveland, I’ll bet you’re a Browns fan too.
Posted By Steeler Nation, Pittsburgh, Pa : March 19, 2009 10:45 pm
Nope, went to school in Pitt. Pa. Lived in pa up untill the last 4 years.
Hell no, Steelers all the way. Always been a fan of them, always will be a fan of them.
Now, if you ask me about the Cleveland Cavs. Never followed basket ball untill I moved to Cleveland. Now I do, and the Cavs are who I am a fan of.
Dan
All I want for Christmas in July is a 32GB iPhone. I refuse to buy one until they increase the storage space. Until then I will keep my outdated and cheap Samsung on Sprint. Come on Apple, make me and others happy in a few months.
You can get video on your iphone for $4.99 go to http://www.tube-it.tv
for 2g and 3g

If you don’t want an iPhone – don’t buy one
I don't want an Iphone, I WON'T buy one. Besides the fact it costs way to much, you also have to add 40 dollars to your monthly cell phone payment.
1). I have an ipod touch, has everything the the iphone has except being able to call. Guess what, I'm giving it away. Don't want it. iTunes sucks. It takes FOREVER to sync. Big deal, who needs the crap.
2). I have ATT and just bought a new phone. Samsung Eternity. Like it MUCH better then I did my ipod touch. Cheaper monthly cell bill. Didn't cost me as much as the crap iPhone. And I didn't have to stand in line for it. BUT, the most important thing. Read this very carevully now. I LIKE IT MUCH BETTER.
3). Apple is nothing but microblows in a different wolfs suit… They are propriatary. Their security SUCKS. They had to use FreeBSD as their base operating system for their desk tops. AND THEY BUTCHERED A GREAT OPERATING SYSTEM. Just like micrblows, they stole/steal ideas from others and call them their own. B.S. Read security posts son, apple's security is just as bad if not worse then Microsofts…. If you disagree.
1a). your uninformed and STUPID for not being informed.
1b). your nothing but a fan boy, which means you should be infored just for that fact.
I can find, and have found, and can find more cell phones that can and do walk all over the iPhone from cost to functionality.
So much for Steve Jobs. So much for you.
go play in the corner with your wanta be cell phone with 2004 technoligy…
Whats the diffference between a fan boy(microsoft or apple) and a red neck. nothing, they are just plain stupid idiots.
Dan from cleveland
3 Years ago I bought the G5 PowerMac (love it to this day) still use it and foresee using it for the next 3 years plus. Then about 2 years ago I bought a wife the MacBook, she still loves her computer. Yesterday I bought my self the BookPro, the 17inch, the best one they have, this laptop is a work of art, not just a laptop. To those that don't like it, that's because you don't own one and you don't have it in front of you, if you did, you would love it.
I sent my last remaining piece of PC hardware to my sister, no more PC for me and if I need Windows, I can always use Boot Camp or whatever else is out there.
If you think about it, a lot of this making fun of the iphone for features that competitors have had for years is a rare moment for the Microsoft users to enjoy and we Apple users should let them enjoy it. Most everything else, from the trash icon (errr recycle bin excuse me), to widgets (oops gadgets my bad), to the Zune (RIP) has given Apple users years and years of "yeah, we've had that feature" (including the original cut and paste in a desktop OS if I am not mistaken)
I say let them have their day in the sun.
This is absolute rubbish, everyone getting so excited….. it still doesn't have Flash!!!!! the thing everyone was waiting for, this half baked over sold upgrade is just rubbish.. Most people are now waiting for the N97, a REAL Smart Phone.
let's all say it together 'if you don't want the iphone, don't buy one'.
Does it make more sense if it is written another way?
If YOU don't want an iphone, don't buy one.
Notice the capital letters, implying that it relates directly to you (the reader).
I have a 2G iphone. Love it. Don't need any more features, but will take them as apple keeps adding them to my SAME phone. Chuckled when it was taking a while to add copy and paste because I knew that they were not only going to add it, but show the rest of the industry how it should be done. Never had to copy and paste on my phone before, but I will find reasons just becuase it will be fun to copy and paste. Now the rest of the copy cats can get in line and try to mimick the standard. Nice going Apple.
The real story is the 1000 plus new API additions for developers. It will be fun to see what comes out of the app store once the developers get their hands on those API's! Very cool update.
From Rob "Soon the iPhone will have all the features of my Windows Mobile 5.0 phone."
Bugs, crashes & viruses too?
Love all of the comments. Let me ask if I can? I have a 3 year old Motorola and am looking to seriously upgrade. I'm with AT&T but no contract (expired). Checking out all of these comments makes me wonder about getting an iPhone, plus my girl has one of the OG's and she loves it, and I love screwing around with it (the iphone). So, which phone is better than the iphone? Pictures and video are important. show me what you guys got!
SJR — Of course you wouldn't expect your DVD player to play Blu Ray. They are two different technologies.
Making iPhone 3g MMS capable and the original not is just Apple trying to force people to upgrade their hardware.
MMS has been around long before the original iPhone.
Apple is nice enough to support first generation? The first generation was $600, and not subsidized at all.
You sir are an Apple nut.
Believe me, I love my iPhone, but suddenly putting in MMS and copy and paste isn't an upgrade. Well it'd be an upgrade if this were 2004.
Wow, iPhone 3.0 now with Cut+Paste ! ! ! Soon the iPhone will have all the features of my Windows Mobile 5.0 phone.
(Of course, I am three versions back from the current release.)
How can some of you praise Apple for this? I own an iPhone 3G and while this is a welcome update to my crippled phone I'm certainly not praising Apple for it.
Apple is only now finally bringing us what we deserve. MMS, Stereo Bluetooth, Copy/Cut and Paste and other features. These are all features that should have been there from the start. Period.
I love how those iPod touch users are so ready to cough up another 10 bucks to update your INTENTIONALLY CRIPPLED iPod. Yes, Apple admitted yesterday that iPod touch's Bluetooth functionality was intentionally crippled yet you are willing to pay $10 for that functionality. You already own the hardware…why should you have to pay to have it's capabilities unlocked????
Give me a break. Quit buying into the BS Apple keeps shoveling.
Oh and the comment about having access to 25,000+ apps…have you even bothered to look at the 25,000 apps? There might be 1000 worth downloading if you're lucky. Just because there is 25,000 apps there doesn't mean they're all worth looking at.
Look y'all
Many are complaining "Why not this feature from day one," "so they finally caught up with phone-x" etc
Apple started with a blank slate. No experience in cell phones at all. They then produced a phone that shook up the whole industry – and I don't think you need to be a fanboy to agree with that. Within a month they were the top cell-phone browser share (or something like that). These were great accomplishments.
Now it is important to press them on important features that you would like to have. BUT do understand that whenever you create something technical, you have to make some trade-offs. While Apples resources are vast, they do have limits. They decided to put out the original iPhone with the features that they released because they felt that it was what they could accomplish with quality and security in the given time frame. Now they have addressed most of these issues (though not all).
On background apps: Why have an app in the background chewing up CPU cycles? In most cases this is because it is waiting for something to happen (like a msg come in). The Push Notifications solve this problem in an efficient manner. The user will get what they want without the high cost.
My biggest gripe with iPhone (note – I do not own any cell phone) is battery. I really think Jobs' obsession with small goes a little too far. They could add another 1/2 once (even 1/4 once?) of battery, and they would increase charge life significantly.
Finally MMS on the iPhone, but not on my first generation. Looks like they've finally made a good reason for me to upgrade to 3G…
Very nice. For funny things and news come on http://www.bussinesfun.com
You want video on your iPhone?
go to http://www.tube-it.tv
You can get video on your iphone (2G and 3G) and even upload the videos to youtube with 1 click from your iPhone.
the MMS feature should be available for the 1st gen iPhone, otherwise its bye bye – on my way to the Blackberry…minus one very unhappy Apple customer !
To all you experts who have such technology saavy and insightful commentary as to deem a multibillion dollar success story such as the iPod and iPhone: you have no idea what you are talking about. Have any of you been part of anything that generated billions of dollars? No? Your comments are cute, especially the "yawns' and 'fanboys' variety that always pop up by the sheep with apple envy who can't help themselves but to show up on the apple-related stories and forums.
You want the blackberry, there are lots of them available – go get em.
The facts are that Apple leaped to number two faster than anyone of the phone company's that have been there for years. Accidental? No. Unprecendented – yes.
If you don't want an iPhone – don't buy one – there are lots of other choices. If you see there is a better choice, please go buy them and leave your goofy comments to yourself. Most of us will be lining up to buy the next Apple offering. Great company, fantastic products. A company that all other companies respect and admire for their innovation and design prowess.
I would like to comment on all naysayer that are furious about apple leaving out MMS for first generation owners.
No other mobile device manufacturer back-ports features to two year old devices, Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola; they all use all new features as selling points for new devices.
Apple back-porting as much as they have is the exception. And I have written a post on how this is part of their strategy for having a cutting edge modern lowest common denominator:
http://blog.jayway.com/2009/03/18/iphone-os-and-the-lowest-common-denominator/
So, what happened to the iPhone revolutionizing the phone industry because you don't need to buy a new phone every year to stay current, you just need to update your software? They done a complete 180 on their original hype. Very disappointing.
seriously, what is it with people asking for an itouch with a microphone? it does exist but it has a different name. for those who dont know it its called the iphone………
News i want to hear is , they have add a second camara to the front of the Iphone, now video conferencing can happen in HQ
I'm a little angry that MMS is "supposedly" not gonna work on first gen iPhones. I've had mine for about a year and threee months now, and yeah, it's a little beat up, but I wasn't planning on buying a new one anytime soon. So what makes first gen iPhones different from second gen? Nothing? At all? Come on Apple. Not a lot of people are gonna be happy with that announcement…..
Don't make me reinvest in something I already have, that works perfectly fine. Not a good policy.
I'm tired of people complaining that some of the new features won't work on 1st gen iphones. Come on people, get real! If that were the case I would expect my DVD player to play Blu-Ray discs. Technology is an ever changing field, and apple is nice enough to even support the 1st gen phones.
1. What about video recording??? How is being registered on youtube going to help without it? how are we going to record those special moments when Apple doesnt think we need that function? Sorry son, missed that graduation speech, wedding kiss, big fish, but hey, who wants to remember those things?
And for the itouch….
1. When will it come with a camera on it?
2. When will it take video?
3. When will it come with a micro phone?
4. Why is there not word program for itouch….only note programs???
5. Why doesn't itunes have a section of Apple only created programs to insure customer quality of the product?
Flash is dead on the iPhone.
HTML 5.0 and CSS Animations will be able to do what Flash does but they will be open standards that anyone can use.
CSS Animations – particularly 3D graphics – will also be hardware accelerated. Thus they will be even more efficient on handhelds – and desktops.
Flash is dead.
Long live the standards.
The statement of Apples that the 1st Gen iPhone is not capable of MMS is an out and out lie. Hacked iPhones have been capable of that since they were first released. If someone can hack the iPhone and it works well why is it not able to do it natively? Could it be that Apple is trying to make those of us that purchased the iPhone first and whose contracts are almost over to buy again?
I'm sorry Apple I was going to buy the new iPhone V3 this June when it launched because I'm looking for a replacement. It would have been worth it for A2DP, that I can understand, somewhat. That is also available on hacked iPhones from the 1st Gen.
When June comes around you must give love to the original purchasers, or you may loss out in the long run.
This load about subscriptions and paying for in game items? Bull, just greed. I can understand for the city guides, but $0.99 for a small item in a game? It had better not be a one time use thing. If companies try to make people pay a subscription for apps that already come with free updates, they will see a massive drop in sales. That is why they sold so well in the first place, one time charges only with free updates.
As a first generation iPhone owner, the fact that they, (Apple), are in essence forcing the long-time supporters to purchase new phones and new plans is sad. This is the same company, same original phone- make it happen for the rest of us.
They should re-title this update, "APPLE 3.0- THROW OUT YOUR FULLY WORKING PHONE SO THAT YOU DON'T MISS OUT"
Just curiouse where the "outside the reality distortion field" part of this column came in. It struck me as less objective than even Apple's own press release.
Nothing earth shattering. So basically iPhone now has the functionality Blackberry had in 2006. Hurray. Yeah there are some cool things (It’s Apple afterall that’s their niche) but unless I missed something there is little to no new enterprise features.
No central way to manage iPhone
No additional EAS policy support
No ability to device level encrypt
No ability to save documents to the iPhone (or edit / create still)
No meeting invitee / free busy
Some well needed updates though (search, landscape keyboard, improved email delete)
Interesting that blackberry models were able to last days all while running apps in the background. Even the Storm/Bold when tweaked and running all the things a power user uses all day you get a good full day.
iPhone fans revoice – you have the features you deserve. Now watch as RIMM rolls out OS 5.0 and BES 5.0 and pushes their own bar further from anything iPhone can ever do in the enterprise space.
Wow. All of these updates were on the first generation of the Google G1. Way to stay on top of things, Apple.
There really is a vast herd of people out there for whom Apple can simple do no right. Came up with a new phone idea a couple of years ago involving a tough screen? Big deal. It will fail. A legal download site called iTunes? pffff … it will fail. This coming holiday season? iPod sales will be waaay down, they have to be, everyone already owns an iPod. This new phone by (insert your favorite iPhone competitor) being released soon? an absolute iPhone killer … and if not that phone, the phone after THAT. Hope springs eternal after all and there is plenty of venom to go around.
That curious case article is right on the money. The iPhone still has the best UI out there period. I'd rather they get that right first and then fill in the blanks. And the iPhone/iTouch isn't even 2 years old yet. In less than 2 years, it has arguably the best smartphone on the market.
I have a Touch, and will be buying this update.
About the only thing I did not see today was any comment about whether the basic user interface would be updated to accommodate the growing number of apps that many users have on their iPhones and iPod touches. It's still quite possible that this is a feature we could see on the day when the final version of the OS update ships. I would not be surprised – generally, if I have a fleeting thought or idea about something, it's typically in late beta.
As for Flash, be patient. In my tests with Flash on a PC and a Mac, I have found it to be a horrible CPU cycle leech, and for any mobile device, the iPhone included, this is terrible for battery life. I have a hunch that Apple is pressuring Adobe to do better, and on that point, I support them.
Also, it could be that Apple is playing hardball with Adobe – not that they don't deserve it – to pressure them to be aggressive about upgrading Photoshop so that it takes advantage of the processing power that will be available in OS-X 10.6. Adobe has been a lousy partner to Apple in recent years. They have typically let Photoshop upgrades for the Mac lag way behind what they do for Windows. Adobe always whines and puts up excuses, but there is plenty of documentation available (not to mention betas) of 10.6 to allow Adobe time to get its act together. Apple has just invested a ton of money on their amazing new tower Macs, and 10.6 will give users access to tremendous processing power for graphics. If Adobe drags their feet with Photoshop, then I have no pity for them if Apple plays hardball about Flash.
As for me, I don't miss Flash in the least on my iPhone.
To all those waiting the Pre – hope you like being stuck with Sprint, the only one of the major companies actually losing subscribers. Also just to let you know Apple has over 28 billions dollars in cash! Palm has a market cap of 750 million LOL Apple could pay a 500% premium and shut the company down and simply take the engineers and patents and never even miss the money. Don't say it can't happen, in this economy few stockholders would turn down a 500% premium.
Perhaps Detroit can go to Cupertino and takes some notes on how to run a company and make products that Americans can be proud of and not embarrassed to own!!!
As usual, the salient point is missed by nearly all. IPOD TOUCH. It's not a phone, but it's selling like hotcakes – and for a very good reason – it too can tap into the phenomenon that is the Apple App Store. And NOBODY ELSE is producing anything even remotely like it.
So would you rather program for a smart phone market that MIGHT someday, if you're really lucky, challenge the iPhone, or would you rather program for the iPhone AND the Ipod Touch, giving you access to some 30 million plus users right this very minute? So what platform do you think is going to get all the best programs? Do the words "no brainer" seem appropriate?
Mark my words: you ain't seen nothin' yet! Apple is doing everything right, and leaving its competition in the dust.
Nothing earth shattering. So basically iPhone now has the functionality Blackberry had in 2006. Hurray. Yeah there are some cool things (It's Apple afterall that's their niche) but unless I missed something there is little to no new enterprise features.

I think its sad that everyone in the world is making such a big deal over this update, while the headlinds include MMS support and stereo Bluetooth. All of these features should have been added earlier and some were even intentionally held back (bluetooth on the touch all along?!). This just proves that Apple is a marketing pro and doesn't give a hoot about its customers. Yay push! Yay bluetooth! Yay copy/paste! Yay MMS! Why is this news? Because its Apple. Why doesn't anyone know these features already exist on many other phones out there? Because they don't have Apple and the media telling them so. Last bit…has everyone forgot that Palm and WinMo have had THOUSANDS of "apps" available for years?
During the Q&A, I was expecting someone to bring up the video recording option but no question was asked.
To the folks complaining about why these were introduced only now, read this article
http://technologizer.com/2009/03/17/the-curious-case-of-iphone-30/
To the folk moaning and saying a lot can happen in 3 months, go and get yourself a new phone. Get a crapberry o Nokia with copy and paste, MMS but miss 25000 apps to date and all the multi-touch, ease of use and UI that no other phone has to date (apart the Pre who is yet to be released)
Those who lack vision will always lack vision. Most of these "who cares" comments are just like those last year when Apple announced the SDK and App Store. Given how that has turned out, I'd say who cares what these losers think.
While Apple has been giving lots of bells and whistles, this only begins to give iPhone users the same standard features that are found on Windows & Palm devices… and even non-pda phones.
Not giving first generation users MMS support is simple sad – it's been a feature that should have been in there.
I love all of the comments about how all of these features should have been around 2 years ago etc. . . .almost saying that most phones from two years ago worked like iPhone 3.
Yeah, some could cut and paste, some had web browsers (if you could call it web browsing), etc.
I'm not saying iPhone3 is the next coming . . . but good gracious, it sure represents a big transformation from what was generally available 2 years ago.
That iPod touch number just wowed me. 13.7M!!! I had estimated 4M+ based upon web usage stats. Of course, iPhone users would be hitting the web more than iPod users who only have wifi connectivity, so that's why I put the + in, but wow! Having an always connected iPhone really boosts web usage, apparently.
With an installed base of 30M devices, with the same screen size and UI, and OS, it's clear why everyone is developing for the OS X platform.
All in all we got the evolutionary improvements one would expect from the market trendsetter; nothing more or less.
Apple's next priority should be to fix the App Store, but it remains to be seen if they get it.
@who cares: Apple aggressively abandoned making hardware after Tim Cook joined the company 10 years ago.

No mention of whether the updated iPhone will be able to run apps in the background though. That is the 1 feature that is preventing the iPhone from completeness.
ex ped: According to Apple, they tried running apps in the background, but it chewed up battery time. An AIM client running in the background, for example, reduced battery life 80%. Push, by contrast, only ate up 23% of battery time.
apple is crapple
why are these only getting added now? why no flash?
why does email still s@ck the big one?
why does apple s@ck the big one?
When will 'the street' even begin to catch on how desperately far behind Microsoft and all other laggards are?
Computer market is Apple's for the taking at this point.
Can't wait for snow leopard, and now iPhone 3.0.
That we have online sales built in, you will be able to buy things with your iPod/iPhone.
Who
Cares…
Another slightly abouve average update for a company that caters to a fad niche. The first iPod was ground breaking, now its struggling to hold ground. Give Apple 2 more years, TOPS, and it will stop making most of its hardware and will switch to software and services only.
Summer? Really? You are announcing functions that should have been included 2 years ago, but that won't be released for ANOTHER 2 months at the earliest!?
A lot can happen between then and now, time enough to get a new phone.
This is a proverbial cr*pload of new features! About the only item missing from the checklist is video capture. And support for external bluetooth keyboards…
I think they'll pull it off though. Exciting times ahead for iPhone and iTouch users!
Palm Pre?
Palm Who?
Dudes, you've just been served! This is the update that we've all been waiting for. Apple waited for a little competition to catch up and then raised the bar even higher. Good luck and good riddance to the ones who thought they could sit on their collective asses and come out with BS year after year after year. You've all been served!
Switched to Apple in October 2008 and never looking back!
Simply put: this is serious my friends!
This OS makes iPhone/iPod touch true computers.
In June, Apple will bring a larger iPod touch.
Game over for handheld devices. Apple rules the place.

Kevin,
Have you been able to download the new 3.0 upgrade yet. Do you know when it may come out in summer?
I have the Iphone 2.0 and I do love it expect for the lack of video and being able to send and receive a photo.
I do not think it is fair that MMS will be available to 3G Iphone but not the first one. It does suck~ debating what I do, it all depends on how awesome this update is!!!
And I don't understand some people…unless you have an Iphone….don't comment!
