What's on your iPhone 3.0 wish list?

UPDATE: Did your wish come true? See our report on iPhone 3.0 special event here or follow our link to the video here.

No sooner had Apple (AAPL) e-mailed invitations to an iPhone 3.0 "sneak peak" on March 17 than Apple watchers — and iPhone owners — began speculating about what that new operating system might do for them.

Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster expects "significant new features," including, perhaps, universal search capability and possibly a redesigned user interface.

Silicon Alley Insider's Eric Krangel has four items on his wish list:

  • Copy / paste support
  • Email search
  • Google (GOOG) Latitude
  • Background notifications

The Boy Genius says he knows of at least two items iPhone 3.0 will deliver:

  • MMS [multimedia messaging service)
  • Tethering via Bluetooth and USB

Apple Insider's Slash Lane notes that two features promised early on — and not yet delivered — are push notification for third-party apps and support for turn-by-turn navigation. Also on his wish list: a dashboard-like layer of user-creatable widgets that would allow users without programming skills to build their own apps. (link)

What would you like to see in iPhone 3.0?

Thankfully, I have got most of what I want by jailbraeking my iphone. Video recorder, themes, sms forward, assign tones for sms, delete parts of sms convo etc.

BUT I can not believe that a so called ADVANCED phone would not be able to record calls.

More megapixels on camera, plus ability to shoot close-ups (like an open book on desk); option to delete only certain phone calls (why only "Clear All" option now? I had a crappy GoPhone & could selectively delete individual calls on it); fix YouTube search function, it never coincides even remotely with actual YouTube website search.

Seems trivial, but when adding a contact, I would like the ability to assign to particular group. You cannot do that on this sophisticated device.

I would also like to see a call log and more specifically the time spent on each call. As well as separating mobile numbers from home numbers by the same person.

It would be nice to turn the phone horizontal and have the keyboard with bigger letters.

To have Zoom in the camera and video capability.

Higher volume for music and the ring tones.

Better music playback quality

Sony walkmans from a few years ago sound better than this does.

I just want to carry one bit of kit around, and not both the iPhone and a decent sounding music player!

BETTER PHONE RECEPTION -

I am often on the road and have zero coverage on my iPhone while my coworker (sitting in the car next to me) has three bars (or more) on his blackberry (also with AT&T)…very aggravating…. sound quality and volume could also be better…after all: IT'S A BLOODY PHONE

I cant believe the basic stuff we want this phone to do, it should never have been released.

I cant believe that 1 yr later I'm told theres a new iphone coming & I have to buy a new iphone.

With the prospect of yrly hardware changes I just might change to an opposition far more advanced phone.

Remember your first mobile phone..apple squashed it flat and repackaged it & told us it was cool..

Set-up > General > Network

Though batttery life is a weak point on IPhones, 3G as a big energy consumer, it should be easier turned on and off.

PLEASE PLEASE include synching Outlook Task with iPhone. You can do Contacts and Calendar, why not Task?

Also, moving photos over on a Windows PC via iTunes is troublesome, why not allow us to cut and paste to the Phone's Photo Directory.

And finally, PLEASE allow Favorites/Bookmarks to synch with Firefox as well as IE.

I'd like to see free iPhone to iPhone communication, similar to that provided by blackberry.

I switched to ATT to keep my out of network texts under control, but ATT and iPhone decided to cancel that service one month before my purchase.

A calendar with more robust reminder features (i.e., "every ninth day," "second Saturday of the month"). This is how our lives really work, and entering individual appointments is silly in a computing environment. Palm got it right years ago…why can't Apple?

Looks like they are adding MMS, landscape keyboard to everything, cut/copy/paste/undo, a phone-wide search function, and lots of new API features for developers.

I expect Adobe Flash to come within a year.

For those that are asking for a camera flash: it's a little hard to add that to the OS….lol That would be a hardware update.

What doesn't seem to be in 3.0 that I want is custom tones for messages and I would also like video recording.

I don't think there really needs to be higher resolution pictures. Yet another hardware update. It already takes a while to send 2 mega pixel pictures to email…so yeah. I just don't see a need yet.

I think they now have everything covered EXCEPT Adobe Flash. If Apple can find a way in I'd say the next year or so to make Flash work WELL on the iPhones they would have the best smart phone ever produced. I can only imagine what adding Flash support would do for their stock.

Make a bluetooth interface with infrared output for controlling Home Theatre equipment and add the supporting software apps on the iPhone. This could be much better than the $499 Logitech Harmony 1000 remote. In addition use a bluetooth interface for controlling home security systems, arming, disarming checking status viewing security cameras etc. The ultimate electronic version of the Swiss Army Knife. Cary one pocket device for everything!

from a developer's view I wish Apple would ally with developer forces such as the IEEE or even Cydia in the effort of providing more muscles in the development sandbox environment where real solutions can spawn without the formal SDLC getting to be the bottleneck.

Hello folks, you CAN have voice dialing (there are so many apps that do that). iCal DOES have a month display mode (although Week would be nice). You CAN'T press two letters at a time. However, I DO agree with many other recommendations.

* Tethering

* Landscape Keyboard in Texts and Mail

* Stereo Bluetooth

* Video

* Background apps

* Spotlight

* You know, the usual.

Whether Apple introduces an iPhone tablet now or later, they'll eventually need to give apps tools to work with larger screens: to get the "gestalt" of the environment they're working in and determine how much room they have for graphics.

The iPhone, like the early Mac, lets only one program run at a time; there's no such thing as the old MultiFinder, or even windows. All the tools are in the OS that underpins the iPhone, but developers don't have access to them.

Apple has to decide which tools to unlock as each iPhone generation adds CPU speed, storage and screen area.

It makes me very sad to see several comments asking for features the iPhone already has, for example:

Your own ringtones? Yep, you can make them. Take a 30-second clip of your song, convert it to MP4 audio, and rename it as a M4R extension. That was the first thing I did on the iPhone was to make 7 custom ringtones.

Several sites have posted that tethering WILL be in the 3.0 software. Steve Jobs himself said he's working with AT&T to fulfill that request.

This is my iPhone wish list…

We really need to work on doubling the battery life.. it just dies to fast. It would be wonderful to have a Spam filter for mail. But before that its a problem for me to not have the ability to copy and paste. I just wish to have a Flash Player. I use it a lot on my blackberry. Voice Dialing would be another good thing to have. But I really don’t want that in my wish list. Here comes the texting part. we need to have sms forwarding. its like having to send something important that u got but not having the ability to send. its like having a hand without fingers. i wish to have a larger keyboard for everything. I usually press 2 letters at a time.

we need a better camera. 3.2mp camera with video recording availability. we also need flash… it really would help for the clarity of the picture at night. we also need to have the ability to Lock or Hide Application on Iphone Apps. I have it on my blackberry but i also need it on my iphone. there are things that I wouldn’t want people seeing, at work, at home or anywhere. there are things that i need to hide… i just cant so i choose to delete the items. we need to have mms. picture messaging is a must. the only way to see the picture is to go one the net. and sometimes you don’t even feel like going threw many steps to look for something. I just wish to have MMS. I would wish for live Video but don’t really need it. but it would be wonderful to have. This is my wish list for my Iphone. If all of these things would true, this phone would be near perfect. It is a wonderfull phone the way it is, but everything has its negative sides. Im sure all of these things would be done in the near future because tecnology is just growing really fast and newer versons are comming out as we comment….

1. Tethering via Bluetooth and USB

Nokia has it, why cant apple? iphone is no longer the only touch screen in the block maybe it should fight with att and force tethering.

2. Background notifications

Maybe we could allow certain app to have access to bg notifications.

3. ANY SONG RINGTONES

please apple…. stop being so greedy… record labels… please charge less

4. Voice

I guess this is coming because the shuffle already has it

5. Call Recorder

For recording important info on a call instead of you having to right it down

5. Message informing that the other caller is a ready on a phone call (like sony-e)

Some repeats as already posted:

N/S/E/W orientation on maps/navigation (not just turn-by-turn I think)

better cursor/highlight capabilities when typing

background notifications (so I don't have to ACK each text, etc., to stop dinging if I want a sound still)

video conf w/mirror add-on (okay, ridiculous, but Skype-esque would somehow be great

better default ringtones so my office doesn't sound like a 1950 newspaper office w/old-school rings

more robust calendar features (like send invite)

text to multiple people at once easily

better viewing & sending of pix msg (including to/from other providers)

disk/storage mode a la flash drive

feature to disable complaints who say iPhone is too expensive while also saying it has too many bells & whistles for their needs

app store — "customers ended up choosing/also chose" feature like Amazon does

…so on and so forth. iPhone rocks

- Copy-and-Paste

- Better memory management – many of the crashes people complain about have to do with memory leaks, based on my conversations with iPhone app developers. (Tip: Get the app FreeMemory – it's a must-have for the iPhone.)

- Better folder management in Mail – I synch over ActiveSynch, but all the folders in Outlook are expanded – very tough to manage.

- Global Search – Spotlight on the iPhone (like the Mac OS)

- Global access to a landscape keyboard

- Ability to group apps into folders or a similar UI design – the growing number of apps is making demands on the iPhone desktop's original design.

- Flash? I'm still undecided. It really is a battery and CPU whore. If the Nazis at Adobe get their act together with Flash, maybe. But this is not Apple's fault, and kudos to Apple for squeezing Adobe to do a better job with Flash

- Verizon? Dream on. Apple offered the iPhone to Verizon first. But Verizon being the Nazi control freaks that they are, passed on the offer, in part because they did not want to allow some of the great features that are standard on the iPhone.

And a request for Fortune: Make this comments window compatible with Safari for the Mac. I had to switch to Firefox to send this…

Has anyone realized that the BB Storm has 75% of these features/capabilities that everyone is clamoring about.

And if you want flash (this goes for the BB too sadly), the price of your service will probably increase as well. Controlled media utilities(Flash, Shockwave…) are hard to distribute without royalties if the companies so choose.

I'm actually severely disappointed in the iPhone and will probably continue to be even with 3.0. I just feel bad for everyone who can't seem to look past the fact it has an "i" at the beginning and Steve's stamp of approval… and the pretty colors. Do some product research.

Major requirement of any PDA:

Better Calendar support! We use ActiveSync to Exchange but I can't use iPhone to send meeting requests to invite attendees to the event. I can only accept a request sent to me, but if I update it on my calendar it doesn't send updates to other attendees, etc.

Everything else already listed as well: Copy & Paste, MMS, Flash, etc.

I'll buy an iphone when they improve to 32 GB and when they support Nike + (this is supported on the ipod touch – I'd like to hear a technical explanation as to why the iphone doesn't also support it).

I have to say, why bother with a 2 megapixel camera. If you put a 5 megapixel camera on there, I'll shelve my stand-alone 7 megapixel (I'll trade the loss in quality for the convenience of one device). Otherwise, why bother with an added expense for a function I'll rarely or never use?

Lastly, my friends w/ iphones note that the keyboard only displays across the narrow base of the iphone. If a user rotates the iphone to view it along the wider base the keyboard doesn't follow suit – webpages rotate, why not the keyboard?

Posted By Miami,Fl: March 13, 2009 9:16 AM

I don't own an iPhone, and have always been put off by the cost of AT&T's pricing plan (even at the entry level), my biggest wish would be either a less costly iPhone and/or a less expensive phone plan. I simply don't have the need for all the bells and whistles the phone currently offers…it seems like everyone wants it to be a mini-portable computer — which maybe it will become. It's nearly that now.

Considering that the announcement is scheduled for March 17…St. Patrick's Day…perhaps there will be some connection to saving some "green" and Apple/AT&T will provide an option for those of us who don't need to rely on a phone/iPod device like our life depends on it.

Synching the notes back with the Mac, that would be convenient. Of course you can mail them to yourself now, but when you mail something, like from twitterfon or whatever, you lose the context of that app.

So, not losing the context of your prior app and being able to go back to it when you mail, that would be highly significant. And, I am sure, a "takes lots of work" acheivement suitable for a 3.0 improvement.

I would like to be able to run the iPod Touch/iPhone from an external bluetooth keyboard. For some people, a keyboard is practically multitouch (I wouldn't dream of writing a comment like this on the phone)

And speaking of multitouch, if the hardworking engineers at Adobe have figured out a way to get multitouch into the Flash player, then let's by all means see it in iPhone 3.0 software. there's lots of flash sites, including video, that we can't see on our phones.

I suppose an inter-synching of our iPhone Address book and our Google Voice contacts list would be too much to hope for?

LoL! (this is the first time ever i use this expression in a talkback…)

do you fanboys expect any of your wishes granted?

Uncle Steve, your insanely original leader to the bright technological and user-friendly future (or his corporate DNA) know what is best for you, you dont have to think for yourselves, just buy an iPhone/Mac/iPod every year.

His Stevenness is so busy inventing(and patenting) everything under the sun, he does not have the time to think about things that dont matter (DONT MATTER, I TELL YOU MISERABLE LOSERS, IT WAS I, NOT YOU THAT INVENTED THE JESUS PHONE!)

1)I would like to see directories for applications, so i don't have to flick 8 screens hunting for the screen where I have all my games or news applications.

2) Proper Bluetooth file exchange, so I don't have to connect the iPhone to the computer with a cable just to update some contacts or calendar events.

My iPhone Wishlist

1. Support for Verizon CDMA / EVDO – not sure if this would require a hardware upgrade or not, but talk about an untapped market for the iPhone.

2. Tether to a computer for use as a wireless modem via bluetooth or wired. – Why should I have to pay for wireless access for my laptop when I am already paying for it on my phone?

3. Copy and Paste functionality

4. Stereo Bluetooth for listening to music.

5. Bluetooth for File Transfer and Synching

5. Remote backup / disable / wipe

Better folder management in Mail – I synch over ActiveSynch, but all the folders in Outlook are expanded – very tough to manage. Handle BCC properly – for example, don't send BCC's mail when you hit "reply all".

Schedule an appointment AND be able to invite people to the appointment. Some kind of e-mail notification configurability. There are times I don't want the device beeping when I get mail.

Cut and paste for sure.
