June 8: The day Steve Jobs returns?

Steve Jobs in June 2008, no captionThe "end of June" is how long Steve Jobs said his medical leave would run when he announced in January that he was temporarily stepping down as Apple's (AAPL) CEO.

But David Zeiler, writing on another subject for the Baltimore Sun website, offers a scenario in which Jobs could return to the helm a few weeks earlier — on June 8 to be precise.

Zeiler was trying to pinpoint the day Apple is going to release the final version of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, the Macintosh operating system being developed to replace Leopard.

Jobs announced the existence of Snow Leopard at Apple's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 9, 2008 and said it would ship "about a year" later. Acting on the assumption that Apple will once again use the developers conference to announce the final ship date, Zeiler went on what he calls "a sleuthing mission" to find out when WWDC 2009 will be.

He called up the schedule of events for San Francisco's Moscone Center  — the traditional venue for WWDC — and found this:

Moscone Center May June 2009

Hmm. What do we have here? Moscone West is booked the entire second week of June — exactly one year after WWDC 2008 — for a "corporate meeting." Who else but Apple would reserve that big a block of time and try to cover its tracks?

Zeiler makes two more assumptions: that Snow Leopard will be unveiled at the keynote address and that the WWDC keynote will be scheduled for Monday, as it usually is.

I'll buy that. And I make one further assumption: that Steve Jobs, only a few weeks away from the end of his medical time-out, is not likely to leave the honor of introducing the 6th major update of Mac OS X — and any other big announcements Apple might have in store — to Tim Cook or Phil Schiller.

So if he's made any kind of recovery at all, I expect to see Jobs that Monday, looking rested and relatively healthy, on Moscone West's main auditorium stage at 9 a.m. sharp Pacific Daylight Time.

To follow Zeiler's reasoning — and to consider the other possibilities he entertains — click here.

Jobs, Steve, cancer, leave of absence, Apple will make new product announcements. There, I've said it. And conveyed as much reliable information as any commenter/rumormongerer/opinionator here. I think I'll go outside and play now, while the adults continue to sling it indoors until there is news worth my time–from Apple.

And your sleuthing was right… indeed the "Corporate Meeting" is Apple WWDC.

I just hope Steve gets better and makes it back. Actually, I just want Steve to get better. I booked my ticket for WWDC not expecting to see him. I think Apple can survive fine without him… I wish him well as a human being.

What a great plan! Steve is on a leave of absence til “the end of June”. For those of us who speak English, that means the soonest to expect Steve back is July 1.

However, if we pretend it means early June, we can set the market up for a guaranteed disappointment, and cash in. Right, Elmer?

ex ped: It's Mr. Elmer-DeWitt to you, sir. And I don't make a dime either way.

Some often joke about the americans being retarded and stupid gun slingin' cowboys.. working for an american company I know better. Sure, thanks to the media most of the stuff we get shuved down our throats is/was "made in hollywood". Percentage wise there are as many american idiots as there are anywhere else.. problem is that there are so many Americans so the chance of finding an idiot is probably quite high and guess what, some of those have computers, know what wiki is and feel the need to comment on this site about they think will happen.

If this company can not survive without Steve Jobs then close the doors on it and sell the fixtures. This amount of non-news from People magazine is ridiculous. Sell your Apple stock the sky has fallen already…. Please can we get on to something important???

Steve Jobs pancreatic tumor was a neuroendocrine tumor which was successfully removed. The 5 year survival is 82% and hence contrary to general assumption that he is in deathbed. Let us have patience and give him a chance.

Speclulation is jornalism today. Its just a guess if Steve Jobs will return in June. Anytime you have to take this amount of time off can't be good. He may have had surgery or some sort of treatments. The simple truth will be that no Steve in June means bad news for Apple.

David L Shenkenberg: "The prognosis for pancreatic cancer is less than five percent of patients will survive up to five years. In short, pancreatic cancer is a death sentence." JC: "In short" indeed. Geez, David, nice that you're at least smart enough to quote from the first paragraph of the first page of some medical Web site's overview on pancreatic cancer. Now maybe you should learn that life is not a Wiki and dig a little deeper. The tumors that Jobs has have been known to recur, but they are benign. You might want to Wiki "benign," though, and then take a little more initiative before your next post.

Folks, this is Fortune Magazine. Their job is to manipulate the market. That's all this is. Set up BS expectations of an appearance, short the stock and when it doesn't happen and idiots go into a steve panic, Fortune's leeches make money.

Not that speculation about cancer is even appropriate here, but you guys are a bunch of Morons.

According to the information that Steve Jobs released– he had a very rare form of Pancreatic Cancer. The type that is highly survivable. If he had the same version that Patrick Swayze has, he would doubtless already have succumb.

Amateur doctoring is not appropriate. Let's be supportive and try not to second guess his official statements, it's just rude.

Also as a CEO, he is required to be as truthful as he can be about this issue to the stockholder. If he knowingly released information that was false he would expose Apple to the potential of a huge lawsuit.

> "Jobs is dying from cancer, sad as that is, he wil not be coming back to work."

Wow. I've never seen an actual psychic post online before.

It is a good thing for Steve Jobs that rumors aren't fatal.

He does not have cancer, is not dying, and will be back.

Go play outside now — and quit bothering the adults.

Ok people, don't get too ahead of yourself. Just saw another bit of analysis about potential dates that calls into question this speculation.

Four other dates ranges are just as likely. June 15 – 19, July 20 – 24, August 17 – 21, August 24 – 28

WWDC 2009 to occur June 6-12? – Don't count on it as other weeks are just as likely in June, July, or August

Either way, just chill until Apple makes the announcement!

There are different approaches to dealing with health issues i.e. Jobs v. Patrick Swayze. Jobs is a more private individual and plays things close to the vest regarding his health and everything else, which is his right. Swayze's on the other hand has decided to be very open and frank about his battle with pancreatic cancer.

Both approaches are reasonable and suit the individual's. The common denominator is that we should all wish them well in managing and overcoming their health issues.

Given our current economy and job market, I predict a lot of layoffs in the "Apple watching and rumors" sector.

Looks like a lot of medical experts/personal relationships with Jobs. How can you guarantee he's dying? Why not stop making claims you can't prove and wait until there's an announcement?

As far as Jobs speculation, at least this article only refers to his likely return to Apple. It's the commenters here discussing his health. You have no way to back up that "he is fighting for his life" or that "he is dying from cancer" because he isn't saying that or much else. He says sick, he says he's taking some time off, and he says he'll be back this summer. This article is written assuming that to be true, and unless Jobs says he's dying, we should assume so as well.

As for WWDC, that's probably a reasonable enough guess. WWDCs have happened later in the summer (it was in August just a couple years ago), though, so it wouldn't necessarily be a huge surprise if that "corporate meeting" isn't Apple. And yes, WWDC keynotes are Monday.

You don't seem to understand the nature of his illness. Steve has a serious cancer and the surgery messed him up even more. There is no recovery, he is fighting for his life.

wow. good digging. but you all have entirely too much time on your hands. you are just setting people up to EXPECT to see steve jobs at the event. even though apple already said that he is not going to return until AFTER the event. don't you people think that apple knew in january that the wwdc is in early june? yet apple specifically said "end of june". don't you think they would have said "sometime in june" if that was a possibility?
