Apple's App Store: 25,000 apps and counting
Other smartphone manufacturers may be rushing out their versions of Apple's (AAPL) App Store — the latest being Research in Motion's (RIMM) "App World" for the BlackBerry, set to open this month — but that hasn't slowed the developers writing programs for the iPhone and iPod touch.
In fact, judging from the slope of the graph at right, the number of applications available for download seems to be accelerating.
The latest milestone: the 25,000th app, reached sometime overnight Thursday, according to the website 148Apps, which keeps a running count that updates automatically.
In mid-January, Apple announced that it had passed the 500 million mark in downloaded apps, but it's hard to say exactly how many more have been downloaded since then. We do know, however, that the global addressable market of iPhones and iPod touches continues to grow apace. By one calculation (provided by reader KenC) it's almost certainly larger than 23 million units. He includes 19 million iPhones (the 17+ million sold by end of 2008 plus at least 2 million more sold in January and February) and a minimum of 4 million iPod touches.
For a breakdown of the types of applications included in those 25,000, see 148Apps' Count by Category below the fold.

Now is the time for Apple to start getting more picky about which apps they allow. Some of them are really dumb!

In the Count by Category table they should add a column for "Frivolous" which would probably be around 24,000. And perhaps another for "Holds your attention for more than 5 minutes": 500?
I've seen articles that show that 95% of apps don't get used beyond the first day after download.
Apple is clearly going for quantity over quality. It will be interesting to see if Blackberry chooses a different strategy and puts more effort into ensuring app quality.

This is all great for Apple. I love the iPhone and Apple as a company.
I am also an iPhone developer (http://www.virtualmouthvideos.com) and I would not discount the chances of success for the Apple store competitors because with so many iPhone apps, it is very hard for a developer to get decent sales.
From a developer's perspective, I am really investigating porting my app(s) to other mobile platforms to get more visibility in a less crowded market. I bet others will do the same. Apple is the first mover but unless they provide an innovative way for developers to get noticed, developers won`t remain exclusive to Apple, they will port their apps to other platforms too.
It is better to clone a fish to be in several a ponds than to be a lonely fish in a big pond.

I just bought an iPhone after having a BlackBerry for almost 5 years. The iPhone is SOOOOO much cooler! I also just downloaded my first game from the app store, JigSee, which allows you to take a picture with the iPhone camera and then it turns it into a jigsaw puzzle. The kids love it!

Programmers, I'm in the phase of comparing fees you would charge to develop an app for my original music. Just contact me by searching for Steven Cravis on the main search engines.

With around 8,000 games and entertainment titles, I guess Apple was right calling it the 'funnest" iPod ever. That's a heck of a lot of fun considering some of the games I've seen lately.
