Mac news from outside the reality distortion field

Apple tops Fortune's "most admired" list — again

Apple HQ (via Fortune)For the second time in as many years, Apple Inc. (AAPL) is No. 1 on Fortune Magazine's list of the World's Most Admired Companies.

"It's been a rocky year for Apple," writes Alyssa Abkowitz. "CEO Steve Jobs' health made headlines, and critics said Cupertino wasn't being open enough about it. But customers remained loyal to the brand that made white ear buds cool. As much of the computer industry struggled, Apple shipped 22.7 million iPods during its first quarter (up 3 percent from last year), 2.5 million Macs (up 9 percent), and 4.4 million iPhones. No wonder Apple tops our Most Admired list for the second year in a row." (link)

In the nine key attributes used to rank the companies, Apple got top marks (1 out of 12) for innovation, people management and quality of products/services. It got lower marks (5 out of 12) for social responsibility and global competitiveness.

Curiously, when judged by its peers (i.e. other companies in the computer industry), Apple came in No. 2 after Xerox (XRX) and above Hewlett-Packard (HPQ).

In the broader list of most admired companies in any industry — judged by companies both inside and outside the computer field — HP came in No. 30 and Xerox didn't make the cut.

This is interesting … #2 spot when judged by other companies in the computer industry is quite a compliment I think. That has to be a lot of strictly Windows users still giving props for innovation and a well run company. Not bad at all.

Creo que el desconocimiento de la Revista Forbes , respecto a la Cía XEROX es total . Como ejemplo le adjunto un comentario leido en Yahoo que plasma claramente el funcionamiento y comportamiento de XEROX . We have been politicly correct! We promote women and minorities. We are a Green company reselling old equipment. We don't overpay our retirees. We have less than average health care. Our shareholders are losing money. Isn't it great?

@Asher Pat – this is not about "cult of mac" – it is about continued, market leading innovation, the highest quality products and services, near flawless execution (yes they did have a couple minor stumbles over the past year such as the flawed launch of mobileme), and customer loyalty that is the envy of EVERY other company. Far from being a cult. Just a great company with great products that deliver as promised. What a concept…

Apple are one of the few companies that are still delivering quality products that are groundbreaking an innovative, and most importantly, relevant to our daily lives. I think they are really just getting started, after spending the last year or so tracking their patent filings…

This really isn't a surprise considering their continued product demand and growth.

Steve Jobs, goes the old joke at Apple, is surrounded by a reality distortion field; get too close and you might believe what he's saying. Apple has made believers out of millions of customers — and made a lot of investors rich — but Elmer-DeWitt believes that an ounce of skepticism never hurts when writing about the company. He should know. He's been covering Apple – and watching Steve Jobs operate — since 1982.
