Mac news from outside the reality distortion field

Steve Jobs is 54

Steve Jobs at Standford 2005Tuesday, Feb. 24, is Steve Jobs' birthday.

He turns 54.

To celebrate this very personal milestone, we thought we'd re-post what may be the most personal public speech this intensely private man has ever made: his commencement address to the Stanford University class of 2005.

If you haven't seen it — or haven't heard it recently — we give you Apple's (AAPL) CEO on life, death and calligraphy.

“Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That’s it. No big deal. Just three stories…”

Below the fold, 15 minutes, via YouTube:

The transcript is available here.

Wow. I had never heard that speech before, but it is now one of my favorites. His logic is simple, and his messages are sincere– Something we don't see too often nowadays. Good luck and Happy Birthday Steve.

I had pined the transcript of that famous speech in front of my study table the first time i read it. Nothing more inspiring than those words from the great man.

I bought a Mac when it first appeared on the market. It cost almost $5000. I am now on my sixth or seventh Mac and I'm still in love with the product. Thank you Steve Jobs. Happy Birthday…..Live long and prosper.

"You can only connect the dots by looking backward."

This is a gem of an inspiration from the Edison of the 20th century. Investing in watching it is the best thing you will do this week.

That never stopped Bloomberg from excoriating Steve. And while they're at it, why not humiliate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg for being guilty of having pancreatic cancer? And Randy Pausch too. The nerve of these people to get cancer!

Bitter sarcasm aside, this speech is one that should be viewed and listened to carefully. Whether you like or hate Steve Jobs, you can learn a lot from a brilliant and successful man.

That the media has so little compassion for the suffering of those confronted with cancer speaks volumes for their bitterness and insensitive nature. My hope is that common people reading this will hold the media accountable for their often slanted views and sloppy reporting.

Thanks very much for this article, Philip. For once, it's not about technology, business or what's new. It's about life. And last I checked, it's far more important than anything else.

Steve's Stanford speech has shaped my views and ideals. Hours after viewing the inspiring speech, the words still ring deeper in my heart. Even when I sit in dark, I could feel his words. I could see him speak to me. It's so much personal. I am so glad to live in an era graced by Steve Job's presence. Happy Birthday Steve! God bless you.

Few days go by for me without thinking about part of this speech. In particular, the (paraphrasing) "whenever the answer is 'no' for too many days in a row" part. Yes, we have to do things we don't want to do sometimes. Just don't let it become the rule for your life.

Well written, and from the heart.

A speech by a man who has been at the bottom and has been at the top and has the ability to still see how it all happened and what is most important. He remains an inspiration to us all – think different!

Steve Jobs, goes the old joke at Apple, is surrounded by a reality distortion field; get too close and you believe what he's saying. Apple has made believers out of millions of customers — and made a lot of investors rich — but Philip Elmer-DeWitt believes that an ounce of skepticism never hurts when writing about the company. He should know. He's been covering Apple – and watching Steve Jobs operate — since 1982.
