BlackBerry Storm vs. Apple iPhone: 8 reasons pro and con
Who says you can't have it both ways?
With RIM's (RIMM) touchscreen BlackBerry Storm set to be released in the United States next Friday, CIO.com has published eight reasons to choose the Storm over Apple's (AAPL) iPhone.
The same day, it published eight reasons to pick the iPhone over the Storm.
Both pieces are by Al Sacco, who probably doesn't pay for the phones he reviews.
Here's why he prefers the Storm:
- Stereo Bluetooth capability
- Removable battery
- Expandable memory
- Video recording
- Works as a tethered modem
- Tactile feedback
- Copy and paste
- Multitasking
Here's why he prefers the iPhone
- It's now second-generation
- Built-in memory
- iTunes App Store
- iTunes integration
- Full QWERY (virtual) keyboard
- Wi-Fi support
- iPod media player
- Safari browser

I own an iPod touch and am considering both the iPhone and Storm. I went to the Verizon dealer last night and tried the Storm. It was quite a disappointment. I couldn't believe it didn't have wi-fi and couldn't compare with my Touch in most ways, especially the touch screen itself. It seems that the Apple is better built and more user-friendly and just more fun to use.
Then there is the network. It would be so easy to solve if Verizon had the iPhone instead of AT&T. I think this was done to really screw people up.
my Verizon contract is up in a few months and I have to make a decision. Do I buy the phone or do I buy the network? Doesn't seem that you can have it both ways, damn!
Look I'm no apple fan at all. I don't like mac OS at all… i wanted to say that up front just for the apple lovers out here.
So I bought a Storm and I had problems with it the first day so I brought it back, it wouldn't keep my contacts. I thought just a fluke it was a bad phone so they gave me an other, I thought it was great until it started locking up on me, and my email was very slow to come to me. I thought it was me. So I went back to Verizon to get a bit of training on the device. well to my surprise I wasn't the only one having major issues with the phone there was a slue of people there returning the phone and getting something else. I was floored. So I went to the Apple store and played with an Iphone. I was impressed. It was so easy to use. and the picture quality was fantastic. I cought myself liking the IPhone. Again, like I said I didn't like Mac anything but the Iphone tweaked my interest. SO I bought an IPhone and now I love it. I own a business and it help me run my business from anywhere its incredible. I even have a credit card reader on it for the Itune App store its the best phone I have ever had. it probably raised my profit by 25% easily. Now I don't hate mac stuff so much and i am looking to buy a mac pro soon, ya I said I'm going to buy one. I cant believe what a phone did for me so I'm going to see what the rest of the Mac products will do for me also….
TO Laura,
I would wait and check out the new Nokia N97 or E75 or even the E63. Those are better than the iPhone and, the reception is outstanding with Nokias. I have an E71 and plan on updating to a full qwerty N97 or the E75. Both blow both the Storm and iPhone out of the water. I am on ATT and have NO dropped calls with my Nokia. Check those out before giving in to Verizon and their crippled devices. THere's no wifi because Verizon forced RIM to remove it. I would look around for a better device. The iPhone radio is very weak thus all the dropped calls and spotty service. Good luck!
iPhone is better than blackberry storm in terms of user interface, and also the Blackberry storm lacks wifi, which is simple careless on Blackberry's part.
See ClashEm for a direct comparison.
looking for suggestions. I had an iPhone second generation. It died of a hardware problem 3 days after my warranty expired. Now I loved my iPhone and was very depressed that it died. However, my service sucked and since I am no longer in a contract I am planning on switching to verizon because it has so much better service. So here is the question. Should I go with the storm, go with one that has a real keyboard or what? The main complaint I have seen on forums about the storm is the keyboard, If I was used to the virtual keyboard on the iphone would it really be any big deal? give me suggestions please
sooo, my boyfriend just got the storm and I've had the iPhone for a little more than a year. Honestly, It's completely obvious that the iPhone is more high-tech. My boyfriend has already had to call Verizon four times because something happened with his phone. It doesn't work correctly 80% of the time. Everyone's talking about all the cool features and such…well, at least the Iphone freaken works. =/
Okay so here's my opinion. I love the Storm. I had a curve with AT&T, it would constantly restart on me and I sent it in 5 times, and they never offered me a new phone. I had dropped calls all over the place. I'm with Verizon now and my service is better but I still might go back to my curve. My friend has an iphone and I'm always typing wrong letters. It's a little slower on the storm to text but I like that if my finger slips to a different key, it doesn't select it unless I actually click it. I can't really say too much about the iphone because the texting is all I've messed with and I don't own an ipod. So far I like the storm, still getting used to it. I have 20 days left of the trial. Watching videos is really good on it. Ever since I got with blackberry I loved it, one of these days I'll test out the iphone more, but for right now I'm pretty happy with my storm.
Storm is king!!! Video, pics, and web browsing is no comparison to the inferior iphone. By the way, AT&T sucks! At least us Storm followers don't have to send out phone to get battery replaced. The Storm has blown in!
I love the BLACKBERRY STORM!!!!! I hate AT&T phone service. Verizon is more realiable. AT&T drops calls and has really bad connection.I would never switch my Blackberry for an i phone. Blackberry storm and Verizon are the best!!!!!
I have had my iphone since the release of the first gen. I did not upgrade to the new 3G as I run fine with my edge network.
People talk about battery life issues, I have never had any issues with battery life except for not plugging it in. I just flew from DFW to Bermuda and watched two movies and listened to music and still had 3/4 battery life left on landing.
Well i just bought the BB Storm, and all i can say is how much i love it. It is everything i could want in a phone. I have used the iPhone 3G as well, but in my experience, its really just a phone someone gets to say, "I have the Iphone 3G." its nice if you like to play games, but in my opinion, is not a very wise decision for the business world. I am not here to bash or argue, just here to say that if you are a big blackberry fan like me, then the Storm is for u! Also if u have the BB Pearl, the Storm is a wonderful choice for your next phone. Also Verizon has better service in my experience also!! Thanks for readin!
The apple iPhone IS THE BEST TOUCH SCREEN phone. For many reasons.
FIRST-apps applications. Tons of them released everyday for almost any need makes the iPhone as usefull as laptop computer. YouTube videos, iTunes music, safari, google gps, app store.
SECOND- the iPhone can be jailbroken and unlocked. Enabling the owner to fully customize everything from font to wallpaper and system colors, ect… You will never get bored of the same old factory look. Making your iPhone unique as a fingerprint. Unlocked iPhone enables you to use any gsm carrier.
THIRD- choice of 8 or 16 gig of memory enabling your iPhone to hold tons of multimedia. Pictures, videos, and music on your ipod. Thousands of pics and music or videos from iTunes podcast even watch high definition movies.
FOURTH- multitasking. Whether your surfing the net while listening to your iPod or writing email or even doing some homework for your online college course and being able to make phone calls or edit and sync data to a computer.
Even though at first the iPhone didn't allow copy and paste or recieving picture messeges or video recording, after easily jailbreaking your iPhone all that is possible with new 3rd party apps from cydia or installer which are similiar to the app store.
Think these are the most obvious reasons why the apple iPhone is superior to any other touch screen multi task phone.
Over time it only gets better with apple updates.
AT&T is also a great carrier. With my monthly plan never going over $72.No dropped calls or loss of 3g service which is fast. Texting and writing emails is easy. Don't forget the sexiest slim design of the iPhone beats any bulky blackberry.
I think that's enough reasons why the iPhone is superior.
The price of a blackberry storm is $199. With 1gig expandable memory. Upto 16gig for another $90.
Apple iPhone is 199 with 8 gig memory.
I owned the iPhone 2g and loved it. When 3G came along, I jumped at the chance for faster data and GPS. No sooner had did I get the iPhone 3g, the trouble began. Dropped calls. Inability to make calls. Generally, the phone is unreliable as a phone. Everything else works great. I'm VERY close to dumping it and AT&T in favor of Verizon and the BB Storm
I had a BB Storm for a week decided to return it. Then thought, why not keep it for the full month. I kept it for 29 days. It is a great consumer toy. It is not a business BB. Texting is awkward at best. Email just does not work. Errors, errors, errors, this is not a business reliable product. I returned it. While I miss the screen and some neat features I'm back to my BB World phone which allows me to function satisfactorily. Maybe Verizon will have the BB Bold available in the next year.
Another issue I encountered with my Storm after having it for only 2 days is last night the battery went completely dead so I plugged it in to charge. I plugged it out this morning, turned it on and it started going haywire doing all kind of weird stuff. I had to a hard reset to get it working again… Anyone else had this problem? I really love this phone but after reading alot of the posts, seems to me like this phone has the potential to have alot of issues.

I have blackberry phones, HTC phones, palm, and Iphone and of all the phone that I carry one off the best investment I did the Iphone is the best phone ever make, I be able to deal with no receiving pic message is ok but every other feature on the phone is great I dont have any problem and I thinks that people that complain about the iphone dont know what they talking about, some people dont have aney tipe of knolegde about this product
TWO WORDS FOR THE iPhone… ITS GARBAGE, GO WITH THE BLACKBERRY STORM ITS MUCH BETTER. ITS NOT WORTH THE BAD SERVICE ON AT&T. I GOT VZW AND IM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH THE SERVICE!
I've had the BB Storm for about a day… it definitely takes some getting used to, but so far I like it. Anybody who just dismisses it after playing with it in a store for a few minutes has no business owning a smartphone. You have to give ANY smartphone or pda at least a week before you really know if it works for you. I've never owned an iPhone, but I have an iPod Touch, which at least functionally, is about the same. I love my iPod, but there's no way I'd switch (back) to AT&T just for an iPhone. In my opinion without decent coverage, it's just an iPod with a camera, that will drop a phone call. I don't care what anybody says, Jobs would have had exponentially greater success with his already popular phone if he'd taken it to the network with decent coverage and call quality.
I decided to go with Storm mainly because the iPhone's battery life sucks. There is no use to carry a cellular phone if you have to charge it all the time. All these comments on the forum are like the "Nintendo DS vs Sony PSP" fanboys debate, hardly any difference. Grow up, boys.
i recently switched from an iphone to the storm, the difference is tremendous. i switched from att because of the outragous inconsistent bills and literally cried because i was losing my beloved iphone. I will never miss that POS again after getting acustomed to my bb storm. its way faster, more pixels, and has more capabilities than the iphone could ever process. lack of wi-fi, who cares? who needs wi-fi when your 3g provider doesnt lose service every 45 minutes. i havent had a single dropped call in the 1 1/2 months ive had vzw. not to mention i have service EVERYWHERE, and not the staticy cut-out kind either. in my experience with both bb storm wins hands down.
i hate everything about the iphone, every time ive played with one or tryed to use it it froze or becomes very confusing but thats apple for you, (even there computers are confusing and backwards)
i think the apple i-phone is nothing compared to the storm,
i have never been a fan of touch screen and apple made me never want one but when blackberry claimed to have the click i had to try it and i think blackberry conquers the touch screen world with the click.
Also i think the black berry is easier to operate after playing with mine for a while i knew it inside and out,
ALSO if you really love i-phone but dont wanna deal with at&t's service or dont like some of its features you can get a theme for the storm witch makes it the i-phone with still all the blackberry features.
and i dont think the i-phone can ever be the storm.
oh and this talk about wi-fi yeah its cool and all but i think i-phone has that option cause to be honest at&t sucks i never had a problem getting service with my storm for online or calls.
i just think the blackberry storm is so much better then i-phone and i can say its the i-phone killer
I got my Storm when it first came out and I've used it for a month. Basically this phone is a POS. I wish I have taken it back before my 30 days were up. I miss my Bold which is easier to use. Also AT&T's service fees are a lot less. Don't make the same mistake I did. If email isn't your primary use for a phone then save yourself the money and just get an iPhone.
Dan
Actually once you get used to it, texting is quite easy and more convenient on the clickable screen. You don't have to worry about accidently selecting something.
You seem to be one of the few users who do not have a problem with battery life on their iPhone. That is a very common complaint that is seen everywhere.
The Storm comes loaded with Verizon's version of iTunes. You'd be very hard pressed to find a song that is not on there. Believe me, I've tried.
I have weather, news, sports and more from the home screen. And I'm really not too lazy to type in Youtube.com to watch the videos on a better screen then the iPhone.
I can also click on an icon on the home screen and click a button to get back.
I think you'd be surprised to find out how many people have more than 3500 songs on their computer. I have over 7000 and that's not a very large amount compared to most of my friends. Granted I am a musician so I probably have more then the average joe, but 3500 is not that many. And why would you want to be limited in your storage? What if you did get more videos and songs someday? You wouldn't be able to store them on your phone, I would.
Sleek, cool? So is the storm. Maybe it's not as popular cause it just came out…but I'd also prefer functionality over "sleek and cool."

Apple actually did go to Verizon prior to offering the phone to AT&T, but Verizon declined it because Apple wanted everything included and Verizon wanted to charge extra for everything like they do with all their other phones. You can get visual voicemail through Verizon for $2.99/month, with iPhone and AT&T apps like that are free. Read the article/blog here http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/29/verizon-passed-up-apple-iphone-deal/
You people are funny as hell. We should start a nerd fight club between Storm and iphone users. Ya gotta get that consumer aggression out..lol
i have the BB storm and love it. people complain about testing it in stores and it is slow, what they dont realize is that people mess with them all day instores. its like a computer and you have to close a program. it would be like 100 people opening shit on your computer and not closing anythin. mine is really fast and i can text faster than my cousin who has an iphone. there is like a week learning curve and once you master the blackberry it is amazing!! plus i send pictures all day and i have to email them to my cousin that has the iphone haha
hey, i got s BB Storm and love it. It could be hard in the beginning, but as you get used to it, the better it gets
I am a current Apple iPhone user. I love my iPhone and wouldn't trade for a BB Storm. I went to a Verizon Wireless store the other day to try out the BB Storm, it sucks, and it was totally confusing. The storm's touch screen isn't as sensible as iPhone. My girlfriend and I travel a alot. She has a Verizon phone and sometimes she will not get service where I get service. I have no problems with the iphone, and I don't get dropped calls. Most importantly, I love my iPhone.
ATT service "s_cks" in my area, unable to get any signal. The only service company I get great signal is Verizon service. Too bad Apple chose to only deal with ATT, (IMHO BAD DECISION). Everyone has their own opinion. I love the iphone, but not with ATT service. Wish Apple reconsider contracting with Verizon. Still waiting.
My only disappointment with the iphone is no bluetooth stereo support. what good is having all my music, videos and such if im still wired. comon apple lets get wireless..other than that no other phone ive owned beats the iphone
Apologies for the repeated post. The first one I forgot to include my name and it stated that it would not post but; it did in fact post without using Name, City and State. Sorry about that. Cmcken1
Wifi is very cool and, up until today, I never have used it nor thought about using it- until now. I have used up almost all of my minutes for this month and, on my Nokia E71-2, it allows net calling. I set it up for VoIP after reading about how I can use that feature to make net calls and aviod going over my minutes. I think this is fantastic. It's not just for faster internet usage. It sure comes in handy for sure and, whether at home or on the work network, I save money by using WiFi. Now I understand why VZW disables it on their devices or, has the OEM remove the feature altogether.

Now I understand why VZW disables it on their devices or, has the OEM remove the feature altogether. This is why I stay with AT&T and, in my opinion, the device choices are far greater. For me, I buy unlocked devices and have full use of the features that are in my device and I get full 3G signals on Nokia as well due to an outstanding radio design vs. the Bold that I had. It works great and other than the email client; it works better and performs better than the Blackberry and iPhone. Nokia just works-something that the iPhone was supposed to do but, (in my tests) failed to live up to. At least the phone / radio part of the device failed to work as good as other devices I have used.
believe it or not, wifi actually DOES make a difference…it's many times faster than any 3G on ANY network.
i still don't get how selecting a letter AND THEN pressing the screen down just for one letter is supposed to be good. A text would take minutes. That and only being able to have a qwerty keyboard in landscape mode is just retarded. No feedback on the iphone is fine, who types on a qwerty keyboard without lookin at what they're doin? wtf
to those complaining about battery life: no, you cannot switch the battery out. Why does it matter if it lasts all day anyway? i can go several days without charging mine, and that's with heavy usage of Safari and playing music at the same time.
And music is another thing- the blackberry can only do drm-free songs, when a lot of media players use drm now, to enforce the copyright. The iphone can access itunes and the app store straight from the phone and buy it on the phone.
The iphone also comes with more internet features, like being able to access youtube and stocks and weather straight from the home screen.
There are no dropdowns or anything to worry about either. you click on an icon from the homescreen. you click a button to get back. Works great every time.
For not being able to have removable memory: apps and contacts and such take up a miniscule amount of data. The rest of it is for music, movies, etc (which is great for airplane rides). 16gb holds around 3500 songs. What percentage of people has more than that on their computers?
And one last thing: i'd rather be seen in public on an iphone than a blackberry. The iphone is a lot more sleek and, really, is just plain cool. I'm sticking with the iphone.
I have the storm do i think it is better then the i phone hell no. but i would never go on to att there service sucks by me people that have there phone can never make calls and have to use my phone, im sure its getting better but when will it? i just wish they would sell the iphone for verizon! i would buy it in a heart beat on the verizon network.
I couldn't take the Storm home either. I left it on the counter and sure glad I did. I am going to wait for the new N97 to come out next year and go with something that I know works. Having owned several Nokias over the years as well as BBs, I prefer Nokia personally. The new device is just what I was waiting for from Nokia. Full large display, touch and full qwerty to type emails out on. This is what I wish my E71 was and, now it's finally here.
After receiving a post card in the mail from Verizon that a new Blackberry was coming out. I was really excited. I didn't care how much it was going to cost, I wanted it. After watching all the commercials on T.V. I was more excited.
The blackberry was released 11.20.08. I went to purchase 11.25.2008. Of course, before I purchsed I tested. Really wasn't impressed. There is no comparison betwwen the iPhone and the Storm.
I currently use the Blackberry Curve, I feel the Curve way better than the Storm. the Storm crashed when I was testing it.
I got bored just testing the phone. My husband has the iPhone navagating with the iPhone is easier than the Storm. You have to press the screen, wait for a click for about 3-5 sec. in order for the Storm to navigate. It took me more than 2 min. to send a text, more than 5 min. to go to msn.com. Simple form the screen makes it not user friendly. SO I DIDN'T BUY THE STORM. I stuck with the Curve. I would like to switch to the iPhone, but I like the service that I get from Verizon. The complaint my husband has about the iPhone is that the battery life and sometimes his service sucks.
My husband is right, nothing can compare to his iPhone. I agree with him. For now. Waiting to see if Verizon will make changes. (it really needs it)
Funniest parody ever!
In today's episode, BlackBerry Bella has the new BlackBerry Storm in her hands. The only one in Canada since they are not sold here yet. Then iPhone 3G Sophia comes along ..
Check it out!
ha, 6000 apps? now lets all be honest, they are mostly rubbish and some good games, but really, its a PHONE, if it can email, text, make a call and do a bit of web browsing, then im happy, it doesnt need to speak a thousand languages for me, or let me play mariokart, because its a PHONE
As a multi-media artist, iPhone is the perfect cutting edge device for displaying my art & animation portfolio.
Give up the ease of web browsing, iTunes music/videos, and 6,000 apps for "Cut & Past and video camera" ???
I don't think so.
how is the apple best for music lovers, when it doesnt even have stereo bluetooth? thought apple was all about the music!
to: Rob in Palm Springs…as to the limited shipments. its actually a simple idea. build the hype, provide just enought to keep the hype going and keep the demand high. its been a tactic electronics fans have had to deal with forever. PS3, Xbox, Wii, iPhone, Storm. its worked for years. it creates a bragging right for those of us who do end up with the first blackberry storm on our block.
just a thought, does the storm need to beat the iphone? or vice versa? surley its more the battle of the service providers isnt it?
The Storm is not going to beat the iPhone any time soon.
Read this crazy detailed indepth blog and you'll agree too:

Here's my "Aww, poor baby" story:
I am very upset that Verizon only provided 27 new Blackberry Storm phones to my local store on its release date. My name was placed on a waiting list before the release and that didn't make a difference. I was told there were 50 people lined-up for this new phone at 7am and only 27 received them. Why? Why would Verizon provide so few when Verizon had a waiting list for them? Doesn't Verizon think I, and perhaps others, considered switching to ATT to get the iPhone out of frustration and disappointment due to their lack of proper preparation? Doesn't Verizon think that management arrogance could lead to future problems at Verizon similar to what Ford, GM and Chrysler are experiencing now? I have never bought a GM and don't expect to. I can't imagine ever buying a Ford again what I went through with their product and service. I will never buy a Dell computer again for what they put me through. I stopped shopping at Circuit City, Vons and Ralphs grocery stores due to their bad management decisions. Doesn't Verizon think that people talk about their experiences and decide to go elsewhere? Verizon is at a critical transition point in my mind and Verizon needs to respond. So there you have it, my "Aww, poor baby" story. I will wait for the Storm to come back in stock and give it a try.

oh, just to clarify the figure of 1 every 13 seconds below, that does NOT include the 8500 pre orders (the iphone hand around 1000 if you were wondering) so yes people are voting with their feet, i guess the real result wil be in a few months when sales then are compared, as both will have been on the shelves for a while.
I checked out one of the demos, just could not get a feel for the keyboard/pad. Maybe they should have called it a Leap frog…..like the computer for kids. I think people (like me) that have been using Berry's for years will not care for the Storm and will regret switching to one after they do. I have two separate Verizon accounts (personal/business) based in different parts of the Country and at one location they will only give a Storm to new accounts- which to me means they are more concerned with some marketing hype and a sales spurt than they are about their customers. I’ll wait another year and take a look at the next version of the Storm that has all the problems worked out
firstly to the comment below, all blackberrys take a while to load, not just the storm, and the storm and iphone have virtually identical keyboards, so not really a great comparison, but i can say that on the day of release in the UK, the offical figures, are one sold every 13 seconds, which i am led to believe is the largest uptake on a new phone, ever!
I just tried the Storm out this morning and did not care for it at all. First off, it froze up when rotating and we had to take the battery out and reboot. Takes forever to boot too. Then, I did not like that the entire screen moved like one giant button and, there's a slow and sluggish feel to the input as well. The screen looked great but, as far as using it, I did not care for it at all and left it on the counter. For me, I did not have to spend more than ten to 15 minutes with it while they were having issues with their computers; in fact, it was a darn good thing that happened as I had more time to try it. Scrolling was also funky- not smooth like the iPhone nor as precise when clicking to select either. Slow and sluggish along with that keyboard design just did not appeal to me. Just my two cents on this new device.
rick from canada, i feel your pain, a 3 year contract! ouch! and i think the post below does sum it all up, diffrent phones for different people, some like flip, some like slide, some like touchscreen, if you like it, then buy it, theres so many phones out there, that the storm and iphone is only scratchin the surface (htc anyone? thats the sony X1 and the G1) a phone is not the be all and end all.
To me, this is nothing more than a bunch of(over aged), school children arguing over who has the best daddy. This is completely insane! I came to find some honest, professional comments on the Storm……. Well, I found SOME. And some very good comparison's. The rest was nanny, nanny, boo, boo! I recently switched from AT&T, but not of my free will. They said I was OEN, (out of extended network), more than 50% of time. Bad, bad, customer, we will now have to cancel your contract, and can't get my money back on 1st gen Iphone. But that's okay, lesson learned. Loved the Iphone while I got to use it! Won't have another one though, due to some limitations. I now own an LG Dare, which I despise! cheap!! after using the Iphone it wasn't even running a close race to 5th place. But now comes the Storm……….This from what I have seen, experienced and read has me wishing I would have waited to buy another phone. I see the pro's and con's of both. But, if someone is happy with their Chevy and you have a Ford, why bash their Chevy?? Does this make you feel good to spit in one's face because they don't agree or have the same product that you do?! I think it's great that we can all agree to disagree, but the name calling over a product, that you did not design…………..Just getting way to serious. Relax, enjoy, be more humane and professional. This is just material stuff and you can get something else, when, if the time is right. I think we all tend to have buyer's remorse at some point in our life. I just saying- Apple user's, if you like your phones, then stay. VZW user's, if you like Iphone better, than switch! If not, if you like the BB better…………… Need I say more? Then stay and weather the Storm!!! Have a wonderful day to all who reads!
Having just signed up to the Bold from Rogers communications in Canada, I seriously considered both the Storm and iPhone.
iPhone would have had me months ago if they had a user replaceable battery. As a business user the last thing I want to have to do is send in my iPhone for service.
Telus in Canada is introducing the Storm, but I couldn't get much information on its features. What I did get was the fact that it did not have WiFi.
Signing up to a three year contract with these carriers, one would want to know that they have all the communications options covered. In the end, I went with the Bold.
can anyone answer this question, if a phone runs out of battery, is it still a mobile phone? now if the battery runs out on ur iphone, then its not mobile, if the battery runs out on the storm? yep thats right, u just put another in, so when is a mobile not mobile? when its an iphone, virtually the only phone for sale in the UK without a swappable battery, because if you cant turn it on, it really doesnt matter what its capable of
just read the posted review link below, methinks hes not been using it properly, the screen? hard to use because of surepress? its ADJUSTABLE! if anyone knows what that means, then his point has no use. end of.
I just found this review of the Storm: http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/19/blackberry-storm-review/
ex ped: We had that one this morning.
iPhone user for over a year, and loving it. In fact our whole IT department (I'm not in that group) at work is anti-Apple but now almost all have bought iPhones because they can't get their precious blackberries to sync with their Exchange network very well. But the iPhone seems to do it pretty seamlessly.
Can't wait to see the next "iPhone Killer" and what it has to offer.
“i’ve had an iphone 3g since launch. it is the buggiest piece of garbage ever. mobile safari is COMPLETELY unreliable and crashes all of the time. 99% of the apps in the app store are complete garbage”
Actually, I have found the Apps from the App store to run the gambit from total crap to excellent. In order to ensure that I am not wasting my money, I take the time to read reviews from people who have used them and if they are generally negative, I skip that App.
As far as Safari being unstable, I have found that if you are truly hving lots of problems, Clear the cache and do a complete phone restart (Power it down by pressing the button on the top of the phone until it asks if you want to power down and swipe to do so.) When it is off, turn it back on and try Safari again. This will clear up any browser issues I have generally. Since it is a true Operating System it can use a reboot once in a while, the more you use it, the sooner a reboot will be required. I generally do so every 2 weeks or so. Actually not a bad uptime.
My blackberry also gets a reboot about once every 2 weeks, but that is an 8820 World edition. If it is not rebooted, it just stops working altogether. Our mobile devices department actually troubleshoots the devices by pulling the battery and then reseating it. It solves 90%+ of all their issues. Smartphones are simply too complex to be on all the time.
you state that one of the iphones pros is a full qwerty keyboard…ummm Storm has that as well in landscape my friend. So how can it be a pro if both devices have it. Oh and a few things iphone wont have even with updates are MMS and copy and paste.
Posted By Andy Manalapan NJ : November 18, 2008 11:48 pm
I have used both Blackberry phones and the iPhone. Ihave not used the Storm yet and cannot speak to how good/bad it is. However comments like this make me really irritated.
The iPhone is fully software updatable by Apple and the feature set is in no way frozen. It has been through many updates that have added many features and in the last couple they have found frameworks in the OS for Copy and Paste functions. The feature is being asked for and will likely be provided in an upcoming update. The only thing you cannot add to the iPhone is a user replaceable battery or some other HARDWARE change. Otherwise, it is a fully adaptable device that is able to have any software alteration done if Apple chooses to. Adn do not pretend that you know what Apple will or will not do, who thought that they would license technology from Microsoft to put in their phones? (ActiveSync anyone)
Both phones have their place, and neither one is a Fad. Anyone who says they are, have not been paying attention.
"i’ve had an iphone 3g since launch. it is the buggiest piece of garbage ever. mobile safari is COMPLETELY unreliable and crashes all of the time. 99% of the apps in the app store are complete garbage"
That's what I have been hearing too and; if that's supposed to be the so-called "strong point" of that device-forget it. It's useless. What else does it have going for it really? Eye candy? It sure does good. But, spotty service at best on an inferior 3G network along with a browser that crashes all the time kills it for me. I have heard from many that's the case with iPhones in general. That doesn't sound like a solid device to me at all. I have noticed lately that all my calls are garbled on AT&T -even on my old cell. It used to be clear on Cingular and worked up in Arrowhead, Big Bear, Crestline etc. It was perfect for me. Ever since AT&T took it back under it's umbrella, call quality has gone downhill on my end. Not speaking for anyone else but, all my calls sound bad-even voice mail sounds bad. This is why I switched to VZW years back. I tried AT&T in 2002 and it was bad then. I switched to VZW at that time. When that was up, I went to Cingular and was very happy with the service. Now after that so-called merger; AT&T is sucking wind here once again. Looking forward to VZW and the Storm (minus the extortion of their plans) LOL
I tried a blackberry curve for 2 weeks for free from verizon and I did not care for the browser. I was split in 2 and had to do alot of scrolling.
Yeah i was comparing my blackberry to my old Macintosh 128K computer and the blackberry is much faster.
Did i miss something here or when did the Curve come into question. As far as i knew we were talking about the Storms abilities not the curves. unfortunatly in the US we won't have this chance until 11/21. I was able to play with the Storm for about 15 mins and it is impressive. First impressions, the screen wasn't as responsive as i would like and the OS ran a little slow but it is an amazing phone. VZW is working very hard to fix the bugs that it might have before the release.
i've had an iphone 3g since launch. it is the buggiest piece of garbage ever. mobile safari is COMPLETELY unreliable and crashes all of the time. 99% of the apps in the app store are complete garbage.
i didn't think i'd care about not having flash for the camera, but wow, talk about having the crappiest phone camera ever on a modern 'smartphone' if you can even call the iphone that.
looking forward to switching to the storm.
To cmcken1, Ontario, Ca : November 19, 2008 1:44 am
The call quality on the iphone is very loud and clear. The reception with att's 3g is not the best, it bounces around to much, but what lead me to buy a iphone 3g was, while I was in hawaii last month I tried a blackberry curve for 2 weeks for free from verizon and I did not care for the browser. I was split in 2 and had to do alot of scrolling. Maybe trying it out for 2 weeks will help you chose. I am going too even though I have an iphone. Who know's I might like the blackberry better. Good Luck
What I've noticed here so far, is what I see again and again, the defenders of the universe. A club that are madly in love with their iphones. One very important key element anyone owning an iphone owner has failed to admit. A smartphone is only as good as its network. Having said that, I can have a flip phone with Verizon, and I'd still get better quality calls than an iphone. There's no need to brag about what it has. Picture this, you have a watch that does everything imaginable, except give you the proper time!!LOL. The Iphone is a trend, a fashion statement. If your serious about your device get yourself a Storm. Blackberry's history is without question superior in the smartphone market. Any smart person will tell you that if your serious about your Blackberry, why bother with anything less than an UNLIMITED Data plan? Unless your living in your parents garage and your digging in their purses and wallets, and your stealing wifi from your neighbors and if that's the case, then I must advise you to run and get the iphone
WOW! I dont believe how many people on here will knock a phone because it doesnt have wi-fi… you are talking about 2 of the most enhanced phones on the market, and all you care about is wi-fi? wi-fi is not fast, wi-fi is less secure, and wi-fi works in less places… so as long as you can go to Starbucks with your Iphone, and have extra time to check your emails, and dont care that someone else maybe checking YOUR emails too, then get a wi-fi enabled phone…. if you want a phone that is a functional device… FUNCTIONAL… Then get a Storm… If you want to buy a blackberry without a data pkg… then you might as well get an entry level phone, because thats all you need… STOP BEING STUPID
let me clear this up for some people…GSM, lower frequencies, lower power consuption, more interference, single packet information sending. which all comes down to any interference and you loose your call. CDMA, higher frequencies, higher power consumption (double), multiple packet information sending. which means if part of the signal makes it through you maintain your call/browsing. the iphone will always suffer from a shitty network, until apple desides to wise up and allow a CDMA carrier to offer it with a GSM ability overseas…like the Storm. sorry to rain on the apple fanboy parade. its a great "device" otherwise…which leads me to my next point…just buy a touch ipod, at least that way you aren't signing a 2yr agreement with a company thats using the same wireless tech as most third world contries. news flash…they use it because its CHEAP.
thanks for reading my rant.
I am not going to compare the Berry to the Apple but I do want to say one the. No network will give you 100% coverage. That is what AT&T/Cingular and Verizon expect you to belive from their commercials. All wireless carriers have flaws and .To the guy talking about not dropping calls because your I-Phone has Wi-Fi you better get your facts corrected. Wi-Fi has nothing to do with your carriers signal. It's only function is to get you on the Internet.
And in case anyone is really interested Verizons PTT Service is relayed via the internet as opposed to Sprint/Nextel which actually uses the cell singals as a radio repeater and they xan also be used for direct short range communications where Verizon can't. Thats why they used Nextels in New Orleans after Katrina.
To Mark in Gardena: Is the iPhone decent as a phone as far as call quality is concerned? How's the reception on it? I just checked the iPhone out again for the second time but, I am not sure if it's the device for me. I am a Mac user and have been for a while along with owning a classic iPod but, there's something about that phone that I am not buying into. It looks great and it feels great as well and, in the store the call sounded very clear as well. I loved the BB layout and I found it easier to get around on vs. the iPhone. I never even owned a BB before and it was really intuitive and well thought out. I just spoke to VZW about their deal and they claim that I can test drive the new BB for 30 days and not have to pay the ETF if I don't like it. But, man, their plans are like highway robbery. Nickel and dime for this module, that module and no rollover minutes.
What I don't get is why they think the Storm does not have a full QWERTY keyboard and we all know it does, also the blackberry will have it's own app store. Which of course, won't be as limited as the iTunes store is.
I don't know which phone will be better, but I do know that Verizon and Rim have had the worst marketing campaign that I have ever witness.
As a Verizon customer who has been constantly received email and marketing materials from Verizon to upgrade my current Treo 700W.
I called yesterday to ask about the Storm and could not get an intelligent answer on when the phone would be released. I pointed out that I had just received an email from Verizon stating the phone would be available on November 21, 2008, but the representative that I spoke to could or would not confirm.
I believe that this Blackberry may have some technical problems. We will see. But Verizon and Rim have not raised any excitement over this phone.
They both need to take a lesson from Apple.
PS; I would never buy an Apple phone, anything that does not let me replace the battery is pure junk. I also carry a spare battery for all of my phones.
you state that one of the iphones pros is a full qwerty keyboard…ummm Storm has that as well in landscape my friend. So how can it be a pro if both devices have it. Oh and a few things iphone wont have even with updates are MMS and copy and paste.
Simply call verizon and if you are switching from T-Mobile (like me) to a new contract, you get the special offers. And better yet you don't have to wait on line at the store on 11/21/2008, when you sign up they guarantee you a BB Storm shipped to a 2 year contract.
I think even you'd agree that WiFi is a thing of the past. WWAN is the future. There are hardly any free WiFi spots left, and whenever a corporate communications giant finds the last of them, they'll be sure to charge you for them too (like Tmobile and starbucks).People that buy a PDA for WiFi are just asking to be screwed. If you want something, you have to pay for it, and as far as PDA features go, no one can touch the Blackberry. In fact, there's no one else on planet Earth that actually has dedicated servers that push your email for you. All other devices use a wireless syncing program of one kind or another. In the industry, iphones are considered a fad — when the hipsters turn old and gray, who's going to buy Apple?
If you want a bb storm from verizon, you will have to buy a service contract just like iPhone. Both are good phones, just personal preference. BB storm does not have wifi on purpose, because verizon is forcing you to buy their Internet service. I bought the iPhone because of wifi. I have no problems at all with dropped calls.
why on God's green Earth would anyone want to buy an Apple product with a service contract attached?
ah, i just wondered if it was out, because i live in the uk, i have on, it came out last week over here, and its amazing, and sold out everywhere!
Actually the battery life for the BB is longer than the iphone for both standby and calling modes. As you can see…
No, it is not out yet. Friday is the offical Verizon launch. We will finally see a public opinion as to which is better
I was going to get the bold as well, but then held off because I figure it wold drop calls just as much. I have been a verizon customer for 2 years and ATT customer for 2 years and ATT is clearly the worst company as far as 3G goes. Im going with the BB no matter what. There is no other choices because once you had an Iphone, you cant go back to a regular non touch screen phone.
Iphone is 200 dollars, loads way faster then a curve because no matter how you twist it your comparing 3g vs a non 3g curve. Your a moron face it. Yes ATT sucks, but VZ has a ton of flaws to. No WI FI is stupid…sorry. Why would i want a freakin clickable screen that feels like a button? Might as well have a button. Iphone multi touch is clearly the best. Its the same things as using my computer. Even when it comes to drop down on a webpage. Your just a moron who doesnt have the facts. BB is a good phone and i will get it because ATT has the worst reception. I dont care about anyhting else.
To the user that says they will get the G1. Good luck, the battery lasts like 2 hours. So im sure you will enjoy doing all your business work on it. The BB is not better then the Iphone. Only thing is better is the service.
I think most of the pro-iPhone fiesty comments are coming from the idiots who switched to an inferior AT&T network, signed a 2-yr agreement, and paid $400 for an iPhone that doesnt even load web pages faster than the BB Curve.
In addition to the AT&T comments about dropped calls on 3G; I just returned my BB Bold as it too was dropping ALL calls. What good is it when the device doesn't function as a phone? AT&T does stink when it comes to 3G and, the iPhone users also suffer. I am still on AT&T with an old 9300 communicator and it works without dropping any calls. There seems to be a real problem with 3G out here in LA.
As far as the BB Bold is concerned; I also had issues with the software in my BB Bold which was 4.6.0.167 where, it would sporadical crash and reboot and I would lose all my email inboxes, the trackball stopped working and the audio signal was all hiss. I had to hard reset by removing the battery at least 5 times a day just to get it back to normal. Sometimes it would not reset correctly despite removing the battery. I loved the device itself but, it did not work for me at all.
I am looking forward to trying the Storm but, I will wait to read some reviews before going with VZW and the Storm. Tempting as it may be, I am worried to just get one and have it not work and then have to pay the ETFee for canceling it.
i actually own an iphone 3g and just upgraded my other phone to the new bold last week. i use the iphone for personal use, and the BB for work.
anyone who is buying a touchscreen phone for work purposes is a fool to begin with, if you think your going to be able to type long emails on that touch screen you might want to think again. i challange anyone to a typing race with my new bold.
the WiFi is a huge deal, who cares how large the 3g network is with verizon, on a Wifi network it runs 10x faster, and i am hardly anywhere where there isnt a wireless network around to connect to.
i think people are missing the largest shortcoming of the storm; ITUNES. the ipod on the iphone makes it worth the price.
how about the applications store, have you seen the applications available for purchase?? its amazing the things you can now do with it.
anything that the storm has for the most part is just an update away for the iphone, so i wouldnt be worried
firstly id like to clear up the comment i made about the zoom on the iphone, it was the only way i was shown when the shop demo`d the pone to me, so if it can be done another way, then i cant argue, but i can say that alot of people here have never seen a bb storm, i work for vodafone, the uk arm of verizon, and i own a storm, so from the storm i speak of experience, as i use it everyday, and the phone, well i havent owned one, so my comments are from our customer feedback, what i must say though, is if i take a photo of my girlfriend at night, i have a flash on the storm, so i can see it, far as i know, would be blank on the iphone, as there is no flash? is this true? but like alot of people, and i have said on here before, different phones for different people, but if sales are anything to go by, our store recieved stock in the morning, was sold out by lunchtime, has been the same all week.
First off all this negative talk about the actualy iphone is pointless. The browser is the best that there is. The battery lasts me all day, meaning I can litterally be on the phone and internet and use the ipod withough worrying of it dying on me. The only fault is that ATT sucks b@lls and the more bars more places is a gimick. That company has the worst service I ever had. The thing with no WI FI on the BB is pure retardation and thats what sucks with verizon. Same as how they block bluetooth from working to send free data. They are pieces of Sh!t as well but have the better network. If this blackberry has some dumb @ss verizon software over it then i will never switch because that stupid. All the VZ phones look the same no matter what brand. For all you sitting talking about the battery, if the BB cant go a full day with heavy heavy use then thats stupid as well. This is not an Iphone killer…its the network that kills ATT's network…
I have an Iphone 3G and the actual phone is ok. What sucks b@lls is the ATT network. I drop calls every efing day and im sick of it. I cant wait for this blackberry to come out and switch over to verizon. I dont know how people can use the Iphone and be happy with it, when its constantly searching, looking for service, dropping calls, giving errors saying network connection not establishes. ATT is a piece of sh!t and im happy to be swithching out of it.
I think I will go with the BB Storm or Google's G1 because they have all the features a professional needs.
The iPhone is for a generation that likes to play instead of work (okay that is an over-generalization, but the shoe fits many…)
The copy/paste function is important, and Apple messed up when they didn't include it. I really don't want crazy ringtones because they are not as professional, so I will keep my tunes on my iPod and not my phone.
The commercials make it seem like there is a full keyboard on the BB Storm? What did I miss there?
Some of you guys are just ignorant. The blackberry Strom Has push email for some of you retards saying you need to conduct business and prefer the bold. Those of you saying how important WIFI is are retarded as well. The verizon 3g network doesn't need WIFI because it is the fastest service everywhere. The good thing about the storm is that it IS still a blackberry, which means reliable email and business use, but is a multimedia powerhouse as well. The Iphone is a cool media device but has no practicle use in the business world. If you are a 10 year old get an iphone. If you want to have a reliable, cool phone with business applicability and multimedia, get a storm. Also – the storm has the click keyboard which feels like a real button (I have tested it) and allows you to type emails and SMS on a full quwerty when the phone is sidways, unlike the Iphone.
You know, it’s funny. So many comments about “No Wi Fi” on the BB Storm.
Just use your imagination for a bit. Just a little bit.
I’m a former Palm generation person from the Palm 1 to the Treo700P.
There were rumors that Palm was coming out with wifi for the 600, then the 650, then the 700P. It never happened. Then by the sheer necessity of that function a company came out with a Wi Fi card for that style phone. Granted it wasn’t supported by Palm due to a voltage issue but it did work on some of the models. So I ask you people,
would it be possible for someone to come out with a MicroSD I/O Wi Fi card for the BB Storm.
I mean, I’m not even sure if it’s possible but would if?
Hardware and software that’s it.
I think that would silence just about everyone.
I won’t be the 1st. person in line on the 21st. but believe me, in about 2 weeks, I be BB Stormin it.

if you need to charge your iphone every 2 hours for the amount of business you claim to do…i suggest you check out one of those laptop things, pretty neat. turn your 3g off if youre not using it all the time, change your push settings because youre most likely in your email where it will check when you log in and you battery will last longer, trust me.
I think folks on both sides are missing the big point (and I agree with cynik – do your research, preferably try using both phones first, before starting a flame war). It is clear that both devices will sell well, and AAPL and RIMM will collectively keep getting customers in the growing smartphone market.
If you want to really see the distinction between the two devices — past the small UI differences or haptic feedback in BB vs multi-touch in iPhone — then just look at the long-term strategy of both companies. Both are placing emphasis on software rather than hardware – this is what makes smartphones "smart" (and why Nokia had to acquire Symbian to stay competitive). Only RIMM's strategy is focus on their mobile platform. AAPL's strategy is to re-use OS X, the operating system they built for computers originally. Thus, they are creating a unified UI experience across the different devices. In 5-10 years you'd have an Apple smartphone, and Apple laptop, an Apple large home touch screen interface similar to Microsoft Surface, and perhaps some device integrated into the car. All these devices would play music, with an iPod essentially built in.
Personally, I think APPL has a competitive advantage for the future with this approach. However, I could be entirely wrong – and I freely admit that RIMM has a good chance of catching up and grabbing back some market share if they execute right. (In my opinion, going exclusive with Verizon and omitting wi-fi are not examples of such execution).
I've been reading this blog for quite sometime now, and think that it is time to get the facts straight about the Black Berry.
The "BulkBerry" rumor. Yes. It is a little heavier on the ounces, by .8th of an ounce, its thicker by .10th of an inch, and just a hair shorter then then iphone, so its not bulky at all.
The No-WiFi OMG we love our wifi. The Storm is going to be running on the nations largest coverage network, with 3G capabilities nearly everywhere you get coverage. So basically we (verizon customers) will have coverage when and where we need it, we dont need to waste precious battery life on a useless function. were going GREEN!
As for the price. $300 (US) for a 16GB iphone. The Storm, $149 @ Costco. a 32GB MicroSD, $80, most anywhere, bam, there goes the iphone. I don't ever want to have to worry about memory. Music, I'll throw it in. If you have itunes, you can sync your "free" music into the storm, just like that, so yes, you can still download, and use itunes.
The Storm does everything the iphone does and more, PUSH email, Lotus, a better more efficient BlackBerry OS, and a screen with tactile feedback, if you dont know what that is, look it up. The iphone screen does not compare. In fact the resolution on the Storm is 12% higher then the iphone, and arent apples supposed to be some amazing graphics machines?
Speaking of editing photos, while running your browser of new profile pictures that you just took with your 3.2 megapixel camera that takes stills, with a flash, auto focus, and video recording,(compared to apples 2 megapixel, still. with no frills) yeah, try multi tasking with an iphone, oh wait, thats right, you cant.
While I'm doing all this at once, while not wasting any of my wifi connection battery life, say my batter has just been on its 360 hour standby ( 300 hour iphone) I can just swap it out real quick out in the middle of no where, because I love camping, and don't have my solar charger with me, I can do that, sorry iphone, your dead in the water still.
I also have stereo bluetooth capability, so with the 32GB's of music and video I have that play back on a 12% better screen, come through crystal clear, in STEREO, no wires. No BULKY attachments iphone!
Lets just say that with all the corp.links to my office, and job, and my blackberry is stolen. OH MY! All I have to do is call Verizon, and then can remotely wipe my blackberry clean, so no company information leaks out, impressive, no wonder the COO of Apple JUST got an iphone LAST week. (previously blackberry)
I'm reading an email, and i see this HUGE link, I can simply just copy and paste it, god i love that tactile screen, its amazing.
I don't need a phone that looks cute and cuddly, and little bubbles here and there, no. I want a phone I can instantly connect to the world with any time any where, where I can send a MMS, without emailing it. I want to type with my thumbs, not peck with fingers, I want to have a better battery life, more memory, a battery I can swap out while traveling, so I dont have to plug in my phone everywhere I go, so I can stay in touch with my office, I want instant access to my email, the web, photos, voicemail, and do it all at the same time.
So please, you can have the first shatter at the drop of a hat screen, the storm has you beat. no matter how you slice the cake.
Comments welcome.
@ dave UK: Actually, you can zoom in and out with the iPhone by double tapping the screen. Using your fingers is if it doesn't quite get the zoom you desired and want either a closer or farther look. I'm not a fanboy or anything, I just want to keep the facts straight.
Touch screen phones are nice and dandy. I currently own the LG Voyager…really like it, but not in love with it. So, I'm looking to upgrade. BB Storm all the way my friends, because VZ has great coverage and the best customer service. I have been with ATT before but at this moment VZ plans fit my lifestyle. I suggest you look for a plan and a phone that fits your lifestyle. When I shop for cell phones I do look at what is new and cool, but mainly check to see how it feels in my hands, next to my ear, sound quality, features I appreciate and use often….etc. After all a phone is a phone and it's primitive function is what??…to make a call.
Plus, I believe it is stated on the VZ website that you will get an 8GB mem card with your purchase, and that's plenty of mem for the average user.
I posted earlier but I have one more thing to say. i work for VZW and I got to use the Storm for a good part of the day and I have to admit that after being a big fan of the iPhone, the storm blows it away! Hands down! The SureClick capability is far better than the iPhone.
jus a very simple point to make, put it in pro or con, its up to you, on the iphone, to zoom in and out ya got to mess about with your fingers, and with the storm, u click zoom in and zoom out, now im not saying one is better than the other, but does seem logical to click zoom in and zoom out like you do on a computer.
"1. Tactile feedback (Screen that allows you to physically click buttons not just touch them)"
Now I know what it is, i want it. Sounds neat.
As for the guy who says he gets three days from a charge…
He is a liar. LIAR!
Now is the time we need some thought and comment on the topic of blue tooth ear pieces. This will get you started. See
http://saturdaymorningpost.com/2008/07/12/are-you-talking-to-me/
great bit of infomation im not a love of the iphone got many reveiws
http://www.cellmod.info/
im glad you wrote this reveiw it very straight to the point …im with htc diamond the phone is great
WHo told you that the Storm doesnt have PUSH email. WRONG it 100% does. And that article above, Lots of the same plus's in each column for each device?? How about spending a little more time for some solid pro's and con's. That Bold is a little expensive for a device thats already beyond its time and only has 1GB memory without a card?. The Storm also has a FULL QWERTY touch screen keyboard. I wish I had this reviewers job. The old redirector took 15minutes to get email. The free BIS is PUSH baby. Upto 10 email accounts,Fast too. I admit the Iphone is a cool idea, but VZW and BB nailed it. It doesnt need BT data connection profiles that are incredibly slow when the network is pretty much everywhere. That goes for WIFI too (why have to find a hot spot when the US with VZW is practically one. Thats why AT&T put a WIFI deal together. They dont have the data coverage to support users everywhere like VZW does. 100% solid the Storm.
As an iphone onwer you are a liar. You are lucky to have that things battery last a day under moderate use.
ex ped: No need to call anyone a liar. This is not a Presidential campaign. It's possible he's managing his battery use very carefully.
Sorry, I need the ability to have PUSH email delivered vis BIS or BES. I need to conduct..oh.. what's that called.. oh yeah, business. Don't really need to view cool photo slide shows and youtube videos on the go. I'll take the BB Bold over both the Storm AND the iphone any day for the physical keyboard and push email. I like how my gmail and yahoo are delivered to my phone instantaneously and my business emails are delayed at most by 15 minutes.
The battery time is just one of the down sides to the iPhone. The amount of useage I do, requires a charge of every 2 hours …at least sometimes every 1 hour. With the BB its every 6 hrs.
I love them both …but just wish the power package (just bought one for the iPhone) was better.
i know the story is about the apple Vs storm, but do u have the G1 phone in america? also called google phone, quite similar, made by HTC? jus thought id throw that into the mix
This article is terribly misinformed! Do your research!
Here is a real list of what Storm has that the iPhone does not… And vice versa.
What Storm has that the iPhone does not…
1. Tactile feedback (Screen that allows you to physically click buttons not just touch them)
2. Removable battery (lets you buy additional batteries and allows you to quickly swap batteries and instantly charge your phone – I always have a battery charging at home and never have to wait for a charge)
3. Removable memory with pre-installed 8gb card (lets you buy as much memory as you want – you can have different memory cards with different mixes)
4. Video recording
Works as a tethered modem
5. 3 megapixel camera with autofocus and a FLASH! ( iphone has a basic 2-megapixel camera no autofocus and no flash)
6. Copy and paste! (amazingly iphone lacks cut and paste)
7. Multitasking (you can run more than one program at once)
8. Screen is much sharper.. %12 higher resolution…
9. Higher quality audio speaker
10. Stereo Bluetooth capability (freedom from the cables – to get this on the iphone you have to buy a separate bulky device that attaches to the bottom of the phone)
What the iphone has over the storm…
1. Apple’s aesthetics
2. Wi-Fi support
3. Familiarity of the iPod media player (but storm can play in high quality all media files… audio and video… and has cover flow. The STORM also SYNCS WITH APPLE ITUNES….
Both have an app store but iPhone’s is much more extensive and offers a developer kit to programmers.
and about that touch screen…
just a little reply to what cynik has put, yes you do get email push wth the iphone, but i believe its yahoo only?? now yahoo email accounts are easily hacked, as opposed to my pop3 account, which storm can do more than just yahoo, but its really all about preferences, i dont see why everyons throwing their toys outta the pram, when the sales figures will im sure speak for themselves.
In the end, the Storm wants to be a really awesome phone and the iPhone aspires to be a hand-held computer. With Apple soft/hardware behind the evolution of the iPhone there is the potential that they could change computing as we know it today. Everyone else will be following their lead as is already evident.
I think the crucial point about the iPhone's problems is this:
All these problems are DELIBERATE.
That is to say, nearly all of them have been understood, and yet deliberately sustained. None of these "problems" stems from a lack of technology.
The limitations on the iPhone are part of a new Apple policy that puts the market in its place. The Apple executives clearly believe the market is stupid, and will accept products that have been downgraded in order to milk more revenue from them.
Everyone in the developer community knows that this is how Apple has become, in recent years. In times past, everything was free for people who wanted to HELP APPLE by programming for their tiny, tiny market share.
Now that Apple are popular, developers have seen all the free material evaporate to be replaced by not-so-cleverly-disguised plans to skim money from the development community. if you want to access the useful information, now you must PAY. If you want to program the hardware you own, you must PAY.
I was once a die hard fan of the Apple development environment. Now I am disgusted by it, and will not write another line of code for Mac until I see serious changes in their corporate culture.
Some big names at Apple need to go. The attitude that the market is stupid needs to go. The hubris that surrounds the new improved Apple needs to go.
The idea that developers should pay apple for the privilege of helping Apple gain market share in enterprise……
The guy who suggested that, and everyone he hired, and the guy who suggested his promotion, all of them need to go.
Apple is turning into Microsoft with one fundamental difference: they have not achieved market dominance, and they have yet to succeed in the enterprise market.
I was going to post here about how pissed off I am about my iPhone.
The lack of a tethering capacity is full scale industrial corruption. Apple have deliberately made their product worse in order to scam more money from their customer base. I think there is only so long you can do that and stay in business. For those who do not know, the iPhone can and did work as a tether to a laptop, but then big brother apple stopped that option, and now forces people not to use it.
But anyway, i turned up here to slate the iphone, and i read this:
"Iphone is a cute toy but without tactile feedback it’s still silly to call it a “business” phone."
Huh? The burkberry doesn't have wi fi. I don't even know what tactile feedback is.
But anyways, leaving aside the insanity, the real point of this post is as follows:
The technology in the phone is not the issue. The issue is the price of bandwidth.
Phones are now being designed to make sure bandwidth providers can charge as much as possible for as little as possible. Both the iPhone and the burkberry are examples.
The iPhone doesn't tether. Why? AT&T objected that they would not make enough money.
The burkberry does not have internet browsing. Why? Because that way it can do it's limited thing with very little bandwidth.
In the end, the discussion about the technology is pointless. The real discussion is how come bandwidth has become taxation without representation.
My last two months iPhone bills in Europe have totaled over $1000 (US). Why? Because I use the technology.
Good luck using this technology if you are not being paid very well to do so. It is a joke.
to chris in miami..
The Storm is pre-loaded with an 8gig micro sd chip, along with 1gig internal. You can upgrade up to 32 gigs..pretty nifty
I've been scanning the comments and something that seems left out is the "SurePress" technology built in the Storm. You can accidently slide your finger over a letter, but unless you press down you don't accidently select the wrong letter. Very cool!
I don't like iPhone that much, I have one, I only used for a couple months and I had to change it. I got the Nokia E71. it is by far the best phone ever. it is not a touch screen, but it has more functionlity than iPhone or any BB out there.
Does anyone know if the BB Storm is Adobe Flash compatible?
If it is, is it browser based or stand-alone .swf, or both?
Thanks!
I just bought the LG Dare a week ago but I am thinking about returning it for the blackberry storm. I was wondering if anyone would care to comment on how those two devices compare. Also, how much of a difference will this new touch screen technology make?
is the writer of this article for real?? anyone that iv shown a working bb storm to loves it for one main reason – the moving screen thats awesome! how can that not be a MAJOR selling point?? what an idiot to miss something like that! and do you get email push with iphone?? didnt think so, no contest, unless u like checking ur emails all the time to see if you have any? u dont? then the storm is for you. and while removable batteries may be a good point over the iphone, isnt the iphone just about the only one that u cant take the battery out of? iphone, face the future, ur days are numbered.
Iphone is a cute toy but without tactile feedback it's still silly to call it a "business" phone. The Storm will be a step up in that area, but by how much? In the end it's tough to beat a REAL keyboard. Hence why the Blackberry Bold is the best phone on the market.
well reason 3 and 4 and 7 on why he prefers the iPhone in my opinion aren't very good reasons because for reasons 3&4 iTunes isn't that great whene theres lime wire and other free sources of music. And for reason 7 ummm correct me if im wrong doesnt pretty much all phones play music.??? Especially if you have a SD card in your phone you can hold hundreds of songs. Also he forgot to mention RIM's Revolutionary NEW touch screen format which from what i hear from independent reviews its amazing and unlike anything on the market today. Also from what i have been hearing the battery life of the storm is suppose to be longer in talk time and standby time then the IPhone. but in all fairness I would take the #2 away from the storm cus really its not that big of deal to make it better then the IPhone so i would add 2 more reasons to the storm with taking the one away which would give you 9 reasons to buy it. compared 5 reasons taking numbers 3,4,& 7 away from the IPHONE.
the most important negative point about iphone is i cant exchange any picture or music via bluetooth withmy friend,s N 95
i have the unlimited internet, but i cant use messenger yahoo or msn, how funny
i dont about the storm yet
Umm honestly, Apples and Oranges so to speak. The functionality and target market are slightly different between a Blackberry and iPhone. iPhone is more intuitive to pleasure, adding the ability to have games and iPod functionality. For Business, i would choose the BB over the iPhone simply because of removable battery, GSM and CDMA "World Edition" enabled and basic word, spreadsheet doc fuctions. Also, removable flash storage allows me to store programs on my phone like the tethering service application. This would allow me to hook the BB up to a computer that is not on the internet in the field, copy the app onto the computer and run it. I could than tether using the BB to troubleshoot an issue online. The BB is a very effective tool in the field as a tech support engineer. The tethering isn't a T1, but it is very fast.
So it is functionality, if you are an ipod user, not in tech support or business, than go with the iPhone. This type of user will not understand the functions of the BB and will always resort to "wi-fi" and movie comparisons.
Also, I travel, so GSM and CDMA, world edition is a must.
Theres an app. called EasyWriter in the App. Store(free) that will let you compose emails in landscape QWERTY.
all the iphone lovers need to realize that there can be something better than what you have i have an iphone and compared to the storm it sucks the storm beats it in everything but 2 feature app store and wifi other than that the storm wins and i dont even own one i still have my crappy iphone with missed calls and nonremoveable battery that doesnt let me edit any files but lets me view them
I think that Al Sacco is a bit delirious on one point as far as why the iPhone is better than the Blackberry Storm.
5. Full QWERY (QWERTY dude) keyboard
I'm pretty sure that anyone with eyes has seen in Verizon's ads that the Storm comes with a full QWERTY when you flip it over on its side – if anything this should be a minus on the iPhone because when you are composing emails, the landscaped QWERTY is not usable – only the cramped version can be used. Why can you use the landscaped one with SMS, but not email? Who knows…
But the BB Storm DEFINITELY has QWERTY.
What amuses me about Shawn from Best Buy comments' is that he blasts the guy for not spelling QWERTY right when immediately following, he misspells offending. Come on! I am a recent Verizon Wireless employee but have worked for a GSM wireless carrier for years. If there has been one thing that I have learned in my many years as a cellular representative, it is this. No phone is designed for everyone! Plain and simple. I really enjoyed using the iPhone, it is an amazing phone. I am also very excited for the BB Storm. One can only take the information given for the device to make the best informed decision for themselves and not be persuaded by self deluded individuals trying desperately to make silly points.
I own an iphone and is a cool phone but depending on your area reception is too bad and you will get a lots of call drops (I tell you i lost businesses and clients because of that) so first do yourself a research about iphone in your area before you get one otherwise like me you will get an IPda instaed an Iphone and regards to the article: KEYBOARD is NOT A PRO in the iphone is the worst keyboard you can use in a phone unless you have Barbie's fingers.
I have the iphone 3g and I think it is insane and you said that on the blackberry u can multitask but you can multitask on the iphone 3g
just bought bb storm, it's way back behing iphone, to be honest I'm going back to store tommorow to change it on other phone. Don't meet any of my expectations.
i used to be with verizon and there bluetooth capabilities were useless, vrzn tries to force you to purchase their ringtones, wallpapers, etc. Hopefully they changed this.
and to answer the battery question, its about 15 days standby, but obviously changes alot because of internet use as well as call use, but think its bout 7 hours, which is quite high, also batterys are available, bout £30, so dunno what they are in dollars.
cant believe people are slating the storm because it doesnt have wifi! im from the uk, so i dont know what the situations is in the US but with the storm tarrifs over here, unlimited internet as standard means this really doesnt matter, plus the phone is free, whereas the iphone is minmum £100 so makes sense both ways! an i gotta say, how many i phones are on ebay with cracked screens??? not good if ur careless!!
Great, another pissing contest.
Ask yourself one question. Would there be a "Storm" if the iPhone never came out? Would there be fifty so called iPhone killers if there never was an iPhone?
My iPhone works great. I keep waiting for all the dropped calls I'm supposed to get from AT&T that people keep talking about. I leave the Wifi feature on ALL day. Yes wifi at home counts because that's where I use it the most like right at this moment. I charge the phone once a day at the end of the day every day.
The battery life and backup battery is a good question. Can anyone provide the details that a real road warrior would need to know?
Storm – Does it come with an extra battery and charger? If not, how much? How do you charge an extra battery with a Storm? Is it like my laptop where I need to swap it in to charge? If so then it will almost never have charge except when I can predict it ahead of time which is rare Can I charge both together so they'll both be charged always?
There are product that plug into your iPhone to provide extra long power (http://www.mophie.com/products/juice-pack-iphone-3g http://fastmac.com/iv.php). It appears you charge your packs and iphone 'as a unit' so you'll always have both charged.
Sounds like this isn't a huge differentiator. How do they both rate on battery life BEFORE you think 2nd battery or add-on packs? That's even more important! My impression is both devices need to improve in this area.
The edge for the Storm is really when it's time to replace the battery since it's an easy self-service operation.
To Shawn N. ( Best Buy )
When trying to give your so called great opinions to consumers you should NOT tell them what is a necessity. You dont know what their needs are. Like the other gentleman said experience will come. Last you should get authorization from Best Buy to leave such comments from carriers which whom you support.
For business purposes the Storm is the better solution. Unlike the Iphone the Storm can encrypt its memory. This point alone has prevented this phone as a acceptable choice within my company as well as others. The potential leak of information due to a lost phone is too great to allow the use of this system. The IPhone is a great gadget. It is fun to use and is very flexible, but until it has encryption this system will not be a viable solution for industies that require encryption of their mobile devices.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned voice recognition? Backberry has had this forever, Windows Mobile 6.0 has had it for two years. Apple? They support it ONLY with a purchased software package, and that package is years behind to times. You actually have to train a voice tag for each contact. How 1990's. After having phones with this capability I would never consider one without it.
Full support for integrating Outlook is also a necessity – including syncing emails.
Wifi? Only useful if there is no other option – you can't leave it on all the time if you actually use the phone because it kills your battery life. And since Apple doesn't let you have a spare battery….
Mental Note, Not going into any of the Best Buy's in SLC UT! They only hire idiots who think they know it all!
Thanks Shawn N!
Dear Shawn from Best Buy,
It's rather easy to see sense your tenderness in years and experience from your comment. A rather obvious lack of experience and youthful bias pervades your attitude. As a plus, your work at Best Buy will expose you to many ways if you take the time to listen to tohersas opposed to drive 'the solution that works for you' onto your customer. Maturity will come with time.
Both devices are great and come from great companies. Differences exist, and the importance each of them varies by who you are, where your knowledge and experiences lie, your needs for the device, as well how you live your life day to day.
For me, the key difference between the devices is wi-fi, where I spent 90% of my time (home and work) it's available and the difference is HUGE. Yes, I have a laptop, yes I have several desktops — the phone is the device that is ALWAYS with me and that is the difference. I want what is always with me to be as fast as possible as much as possible.
You mock mobile gaming? Again, your needs may be different, but the basic difference of having the device always with you is what makes it so useful. I never have a bored child with me anymore.
Strangely, if quality of experience is what makes you slight the mobile gaming world, it's strange you rate camera and videos #1 and #2? Mobile photography and video is clearly 2nd rate if that's your logic. However, the magic of being 'always there' is invaluable.
I love the iPHone, I love the Storm — which one is ritght for you depends on you. I hope the discussions properly highlight the differences so people get the device which is right for them, not the device that is best for the arrogant kid at Best Buy that only understands his life and priorities. Maybe there is a new SNL skit here….Best Buy "Guy" (I can hear him say…."…MOVE!)
also jus a little sumthing to add having read all ur posts below, alot of you have said – vote with ur money – well in the uk the iphone had 1000 pre launch orders, the storm had over 8000, and vodafone (think thats verizon to you lot) had to courrier out storms to the shops because of demand, seems its the winner in that sense, but i guess everything is down to tase.
i live in england, and the i phone and storm are out over here, looked at both, and although the they are quite similar, the staff tryin to sell me the storm were far better than the ppl trying to sell me an iphone, so for that reason, and the java situation im gunna get the storm, and while it doesnt have wif, here in the uk, we can have unlimited internet, so kinda doesnt matter
I would say: Get them both and get rid of your land line. enjoy. Both products are revolutionary gadgets that are at the top of the game.
In fairness to both sides, my comments are now showing up on my iPod, not just my laptop. Buy what you LIKE AMERICA, and complain about crap that you don't have, it will only force technology to get BETTER…
ex ped: Dan, there's no mystery here. Comments on Time Inc. blogs have to be read and approved before they are posted. It's early in the morning and you're typing up a storm. I'm doing my best to keep up.
Shawn, we can weigh the pros and cons all night long, no one seems to realize what the real argument is here. BUY WHAT YOU LIKE. If people dont buy a storm because it lack wi-fi, they will be forced to add it.
These arguments are all just a pissing contest. What is actually better, and iPhone 3g, or a BB Storm? We can't answer that as a whole. The market will decide. You have made a fantastic argument for the BB Storm, but at the same time, I love my iPod, and have not had to pay a monthly fee for it. In the end, the market will regulate itself, and everything debated here, will eventually fade away into the next-newest-best thing… .
Also, let me add, that it is strange that I posted a comment 10 minutes ago, and it shows up on my laptop, but not on my iPod…
I won't even attempt to explain why, just an observation, draw your own conclusions….
Please please, some of you need to think before you write some of your comments.
Just to give you a little bit of background info about myself. I work at Best Buy in the Best Buy Mobile dept. I sale three carriers; Verizon, At&t, and T-Mobile. I know these carriers and what they offer, I have also been paying close attention to the BB Storm. I compare these carriers to each other all day long so I can assure you my opinion is a good one.
First of all lets talk about networks. If you take a look at Verizon and At&t's coverage maps and compare them, you will find that Verizon has far greater coverage than At&t, At&t doesnt even come close. At&t's network always seems to be having trouble with their so called "3G". Im pretty sture I have never heard of any problems with Verizon's network….Ever? They are actually rated #1.
And by the way, because At&t's network sucks so bad, almost every iPhone user has come into the store and asked this question.."something is wrong with my phone, it always drops calls..What in the hell can I do?!?" I tell them, Switch your network to Edge. I give them my card tell them to call me if they have any problems, and I never get a call from any of them…At&t needs to update and fix the glitches with their 3G, plain and simple.
As for the phones. It really makes me mad that people are like "OoO no WiFi!!! not buying that!!"..can I just say one thing? SHUT THE HELL UP, seriously. WiFi is not everything on the phone, Verizons connections with their aircards and amazingly fast and probably faster than your ghetto DSL or Cable..so please stop complaining like little girls, its annoying.
Anyways, back the the phones. I will just compare the two with some key points of both iPhone and BB Storm, that matter in my eyes.
iPhone:
1. App Store
2. Applications
2. Browser
3. Coverflow (pretty cool)
4. WiFi (a plus, not a necessity)
BB Storm:
1. 3.2 Megapixel Camera
2. PictureMail and Ability to record Video
3. Expandable Memory
4. Removable battery
5. Extremely better screen resolution
6. Browser
7. Verizons Network**
8. Word, Excel, and PPoint
9. Tethering
Must I keep going? Seriously…
The reason the Storm is so much better than the iPhone..as you can see above.
I put browser on both of them because both browsers are pretty much the same, full HTML. If your going to spend your day on a Mobile browser..get a life. And was it just me or did the Al Sacco just start pulling shit out if his ass on the iPhone just to make it to 8? Because as far as I know, the BB storm has a HTML browser, Full QWERTY Keyboard? who cares about second gen, it looks exactally the same other than the back. Built in memory is a drag and its 100 dollars more for the 16Gig, and the storm comes with a 8Gig SD Card in the box. and you can also sync iTunes with the blackberry. so yeah…. stop trying guys….
oh and someone said that iPhone has better games and crap?? right…if you going to play games on a mobile device..please again, get a life maybe go out with some friends? try to talk to girls idk..just try for the sake of…trying?
and also the design of the phone, you think apple could of come up with something different..but no, it stayed the same. BB is all about looks and damn that storm is sexy. and if you think otherwise, just stop thinking. All apple did was what Microsoft did for the xbox, made the same thing..painted it black and put it out on the market.. woopdidedoo! big dif, I think not!
and im sorry if my post seems biased, Im really not. I thought the iPhone was a great peice of technology when it came out it still is, But please dont try and compare it with the blackberry storm.. you make yourself sound like an idiot..just like the poster who cant even spell QWERTY, serioiusly? its right on your keyboard all right in a row?!?!? anyways, if I have affended any of you.. I really dont care, stop trying to compare. wow I just rhymed.
Cool its late, there is my opinion. have fun with it.
What is it that you morons don't understand about this "pretend argument?"
I own a 2g Ipod touch. I will never have an iPhone, or a Storm. You vote with your dollar. If you like the storm better, buy it, if you like the iPod or iPhone better, buy it. What is with this "Ford vs Chevy" redneck pissing contest?
I'm not trying to argue either side here, the simple aspect is that people buy what they like. The economy will sort the rest out. If the storm is better, apple will need to build a better iphone, if the iphone is better, Blackberry will need to build a better storm.
This crap is just silly… Stop arguing about which one is better, and just buy the one you like.
iPods/iPhones need flash, java, etc… I know very little about the storm, but wi-fi would help. Chevy vs ford, PC vs Mac, it doesnt ACTUALLY MEAN ANYTHING. Buy what you like best, and the economy will sort it out…
It would have been nice if you had numbered the reasons correctly.
In BOTH lists, the number 8 reason above is the number ONE reason in both articles!
My main reasons for a "NO" on the iphone? You are locked in to using (in the U.S., anyway) ATT for phone service, and if you already have an iPOD, the iTunes part is just more crap to waste your money on.
Jerry w
Apple is the company that everyone else copies the iphone is the only reason there will even be a storm the same way it was with the the computer and if your a mac person there's no better phone.
ok ok..lets get the story straight here. The Storm doesnt have wifi because vodaphone didnt want it included….period.
as for point regarding Itunes…blackberry already works with Itunes via Desktop Manager or 3rd party apps (umm wont say its the same user experience as iphone and itunes but at end the day you can still listen to your tunes, besides who pays for music anyways)
there both great phones. its just all about prefrence. if u like mac/apple. iphone is the way to go. if your a mac iphone hater then get a storm? who cares really try both mess around with them find what suit's u better then u find your solution? but then again to all you storm fans. it is quite funny how they talk down on an apple iphone when most of the concept of the phone was jacked from it. GG tho.
I'm so tired of people whining about the lack of wi-fi.
I currently have a Treo 700P and I don't miss wi-fi. I went out of town on business and internet on my Treo was faster than the wi-fi at the hotel where I was staying.
A couple of reviews said picking the Storm over the iPhone is stupid.
The iPhone can't edit word or excel out of the box (if at all), it can't cut and paste, it can't receive MMS messages, it has no video recording, and the camera has no flash.
this is so stupid. the iPhone is the best. I dont care how many people say this, but using the keyboard on the iphone is amazing. if u use it enough, you go so fast it shocks people. the iphone is supper fast, has wifi.
it has the app store which is like the best invention of life cuz u can download any game or app to customize your phone. it has a built in ipod! whats better than that.
WHO CARES IF THE BLACKBERRY HAS A REMOVABLE BATTERY! and expandable meemory cost crap loads. it only comes with 1 gig!
WiFi be helpful when there is no cell signal, like in the basement where my server room is… I have lots of WiFi but no bars on any cell network. Why not open up the Storm to a broad array of options and let the user choose when and where to use it????????
I don’t really care if some think 3G is better than WiFi, or vice versa – I’d just like to use any connection that is available. Some kind of connection is always better than NONE.
I am a fan of the Storm. First of all, I don't think WiFi is the killer for the storm. While it would be better if it did have WiFi, Verizon's 3G should be enough for me. I wouldn't use WiFi that much anyway, since I am mostly moving about, away from hotspots. Also, here are reasons why I disagree with Sacco's iPhone pros. I like the removable memory, not to mention, Verizon includes an 8GB micro SD card in the box. Next, storm will be getting an App Store in the coming months. While it may not be as good as Apple's, it is still an app store. Also, iTunes are manageable on the Storm. It can also play any other music. Finally, the storm has a Qwerty keyboard also! It is actually bigger than the iPhone and has is in landscape mode. With the Click-through screen, the keyboard should definately beat the iPhone's.
They both seem like solid phones, though the Storm has yet to prove itself in the real world.
Some feisty comment on the boards. Seems to me that all phones are going to have some compromise of some sort or another. Different people will choose one over another based on what they deem as acceptable compromises.
Preferences aside though, one has to give credit where credit is due. It's Apple that has elevated the standards of what's to be expected of smartphones. Without Apple all of these other vendors would be cranking out their typical lowest common denominator devices. In my opinion, it's that where Apple and the iPhone gets my support.
iPhone can tether using NetShare which was released for a certain period of time and works great. I imagine that it will find its way back in the app store.
I Know that the iphone is better in general but the one feature that may sway people to get the storm is the ability to make it a tethered modem.all the other reasons are dumb or you can get if you jailbreak it
umm.. maybe if yall read into stuff you would find out that Verizon ALLOWS WiFi!
and BB did NOT make this phone with WiFi.
Verizon has the best 3G network!
AT&T ALWAYS has trouble with it.
Verizon is the way to go!
The Storm is the way to go.
LOL who wrote this?? the guys an idiot. the reasons for prefering the iphone
1 second generation…uhm so? when did that make it a better product? in my opinion they just added what should have been there fromt he start like 3g. edge on was stupid.
2 built in memory…who cares? i would rather have swapable memory so i can essentially have unlimited memory. plus he has removable memory as a pro for the storm…fool.
3 and 4 itunes store and itunes integration. both things that dont really matter since you can have itune without the iphone and last i knew the storm IS supose to sync with your itunes. As for the app store for the iphone..nice but you know i get sick of hearing it like apps arent available for the storm my god they have apps all over the place sure you cant access them direct YET(they are adding it) HOWEVER its better to not go thru the app store because they limit what makes it to that store anyway. just get your lazy butt on the net and look for what you want
5 the iphone QWERTY keyboard…uhm when did they get rid of the QWERTY keyboard on the storm??
6 wi-fi now this one in some select areas matters. from what i have heard for th UK is awesome. here in the U.S. theres not hotspots all over the place and manytimes they arent free. i have wifi on my hone and havent used it. ill take the 3g connection thanks. after all i have it to be MOBILE
7 ipod media player. does this play something i cant play on the media player on the storms media player? doubt it
8 the safari browser..not used it so cant really say much, but i will say ive heard all good on the browser for the storm.
so i wish people that would get out here and write these articles would put some thought into them and not be an idiot yes they both have strong points and until i actually get my hands on a storm i wont decide if i actually want one. i may hate the push technology on it. but at this point FOR ME blackberry wins hands down…plus i hate the things the EVERYBODY has…and since the iphone has outsold the moto razor i dont want it. i dont want to be a me to! person. plus like others have said. i really dont like AT&T
The point of wi-fi is that it enables you to join the local network. With the iPhone, can control the music playing in the living room from the porch, or control the computer in the den using vnc, or play multi-player games with another person with an iPhone, all over wi-fi.
You would not buy the Blackberry Storm over the iPhone unless you are out of your mind. It's not a contest. It's not even close. iPhone wins going away because of 1/Elegance of design, 2/App Store, and 3/WiFi
Both phones suck, but not because of feature trade-offs but because you can only get them on particular vendor networks. That sucks and it is why I refuse to own either of them. No vendor should be able to keep me from purchasing a product and using elsewhere.
Interesting that he lists Expandable memory as a positive for the Storm and also lists built-in memory as an advantage for the iPhone. Seems pretty contradictory to me.
And WHY NO MENTION OF THE PRICE?? Storm=FREE in Europe.
Storm-$99 in the US with the NE2.
Why is wifi suddenly a necessary component of a cell phone? Where do all you wifi needing folks live where its readily available, and dont say your house because that doesnt count. Besides the airport or starbucks where is there wifi readily available. Most places that have it require you to "log in" before you can access it anyway in which by the time you do log in you would have already had the info you needed if your had simply loaded it up using the cellular network. Also, since all iPhone users have to use ATT it makes sense that you would have a natural gravitation to wifi since att's 3G is nowhere near as fast as verizon's.
the problem with the iphone isn't really the iphone.. it's AT&T.. I can tell you that at least here in NYC, AT&T call reception is terrible. (I had to return my iphone within a week because of dropped calls and poor clarity.) What's the point of having a fancy phone if you can't be heard. That's why the Storm will be better – it's the network! (Verizon)
iPhone is only useful when you jailbreak it. Easy to tether then. Wifi very useful to access intranet locally. The "full qwerty" keyboard is not full in all apps. I use my palm to text to email accounts routinely. The iPhone keyboard is numeric only in the text message app and you cannot enter the @ in email addresses. No cut and paste between apps. No search capability between apps (cannot locate note with specific text). Cannot edit notes on your laptop unless jailbroken. Very nice hardware, software needs lots of work.
Folks:"3G" networks are no where near as fast as WiFi, try max of 2mbits/user (typical 384kbps) on 3G vs 54 mbps for wifi, typically 11-20mbps depending on equipment, and up to 36 for a good deployment. I have been involved in the development of both and I think wifi is essential for web surfing, etc. Data on wifi, voice on 3G. You need both.
Mike from Seattle — I'm a developer too, and Safari is actually the most fully compliant browser available. But you're comparing Safari to Firefox in the usability department, which has nothing to do with standards. (And I agree with you… Firefox is better.) The next release of Safari may turn the tide. Chrome might too, if they ever get beyond beta.
here is an idea, you want most of what the iphone lacks but the bb has?? jailbreak your iphone, you get everything and more. and as for the futures of both these products, apple has a pretty big head start. i also see apple being able to step up its business capabilities, i don't see bb being able to catch apple in the areas its clearly leading…ie: ipod features, app store, and UI. the storm will be a very solid, and popular product, but i really do see apple continuing to become a much larger player in the mobile market. and lets face it, apple doesn't live and die by its phone business, rimm needs to diversify because the cell market is getting way too crowded for anyone to be the hands down leader.
You honestly think Safari is worth anything? As a web developer I can tell you that all it is, is a cheap crappy version of Firefox with lots of quirky bugs in it that they refuse to fix. It's like they've never heard of web standards before.
The iPhone is better designed for idiots. For example, removable media sounds nice, but so many people then run into problems with bad reads/zapped data on removable media.
Many of Blackberry users are too proud to admit they're also idiots…so they continue to use the device requiring the most effort.
Let's not forget that Storm has email push on any account you have. iPhone supports push only from your Yahoo account by contract between Yahoo/AT&T/Apple.
The Storm has a full QWERY (virtual) keyboard, syncs with iTunes and comes with a pre-installed 8gb card…
I have just purchased The Blackberry Storm with Vodafone UK, and thank God it came with a 14 day money back guarantee! We run Apples iPhone for business purposes and although it has some drawbacks it certainly is easier to use than the Storm. With that said, the Storm is a good looking phone but everything, including making a call is so much more work. My own opinion is stick with the iPhone.
You've got to be kidding me. Someone thinks that built-in memory is better than removable memory? What a joke.
The Storm is on verizon CDMA REV A network which is already as fast as your wifi so having wifi would be redundant-
What iphone doesn't have frikin MMS, Video recording, flash, upgradable media card, native integrated copy/paste, – I think i'll pass
First of all, the storm doesn't have wifi because verizon doesn't want people to have it. Plain and simple, they disabled it on my 8830WE.
You want wifi on a cell phone because even the fastest 3G connection pales in comparrison to a fast wifi connection. If you are downloading whole albums, or movies it does make a difference.
Also the storm does have a ful qwerty keyboard. Its very nice and much easier to use than the iPhone's.
Safari browser- whoopty do. Opera all the way.
Obviously I'm a bb fan. Better product all around. Sorry apple guys. I love my iPod touch though!
What is the point of wi-fi on ANY cellphone that has a good 3g network? Of course that's given it's indeed a good 3g network.
No cut and paste for the IPhone? No haptic feedback? No removable memory/battery? What good is it?
I see what the previous poster is saying, but both phones have their ups and downs. If there was one phone that catered to the needs/wants of EVERYONE then we would all have the same thing. to each his/her own.

All of my co-workers have iphones, I am the only BB. I can't tell you the frustration these guys have with dropping calls, phone switching off, losing connection on e-mail. The storm takes some time to get use to. I hated it at first, but now I love it. and I type faster than when i had buttons on the BB. I travel for work and have NEVER had a problem with not having internet. And I can be in some pretty remote places. Don't worry about wi-fi, cause if you can't get the connection on Blackberry, it wont help to have an iphone.
