Can you trade an old iPhone for a new?
OK, there's a new, faster iPhone 3G coming on July 11. But what about the 6 million people who bought the first one?
That depends when and where they got them.
According to reports Monday in Gizmodo and Ars Technica, citing AT&T sources, U.S. customers who bought an iPhone from Apple (AAPL) or AT&T (T) after May 27 will be allowed to trade it in for a new one with no additional charges (beyond the usual 10% restocking fee).
Customers who purchased an iPhone on or before May 27 are out of luck.
In the U.K., O2 is offering its iPhone customers a better — if more complicated — deal. You have to know what "top-ups" are to understand the terms offered on O2's website here. It's a little clearer as MacWorld UK explains it:
"Existing iPhone customers on the £45 per month contract will be able to upgrade their existing model to the new 8GB iPhone for free on July 11 by visiting the O2 Website. As we reported, you will need to sign up for a new 18 month contract. Existing customers on the £75 per month contract will receive the 16GB iPhone for free.
Current iPhone users on the £35 per month contract will be required to pay £99 to upgrade to the new handset and sign up for a new 18 month contract. They can, however, move up to the more expensive £45 per month contract and get the iPhone for free." (link)
No word yet on trade-ins from Orange in France or T-Mobile in Germany.
David, you are very welcome. While I was testing the Gen 1.0 iPhone for you for the past year, I'll bring you up to date of what I discovered. With this phone I have been able to spend much more time OUT of the office traveling, skiing, snowmobiling and boating, all the while keeping in contact with my office and all the information I need to make all the money I make. But, David, I suggest you wait and allow me to test Gen 2.0 for a year before you take the plunge. If you wait for Gen 3.0, the price may be lower for you, no sense spending all your annual allowance in one shot for a Gen 2.0 iPhone, as surely something better will come along next year.
As an O2 user, I think that this deal alone is enough to guarantee Apple their 10M iPhones by the end of the year. I think they could easily get 50% of the 6M shipped again giving them 9M without having to lower the general price more than they want.
Its brilliant for us existing users (I have four people fighting over who gets the old phone) plus I get GPS and 3G.
And Apple gets 3M people older iPhones in the hands of people who wouldn't have gone out and bought them anyway but who will no doubt soon be saving up for the new models.
I received the email offer, and immediately registered for the offer with O2s website, by iPhone, from a gate at CdeG airport. Do that on a Nokia 95.
those of us with v1 iPhones will be able to sell ours for far more than we paid and upgrade to iPhone 3G. Nothing like getting to use an iPhone for a year and not having to pay for it!
David, David, David. You know, most of us buy vehicles even though we know that there are going to be newer models in the near future. It all depends on what you want at the time. If $200 keeps you from buying something that you want right now because you want to wait out the next model then you probably can't afford it anyway and you posted your response from the library because you can't afford your own computer either.
"no addition charges"?
You need an editor.
ex ped: But I have you! Seriously, thanks. Always appreciate sharp eyed readers.
Please!.. There's always a better and newer toy around and if you just sit and wait for it to come you'll never get anything. I love my iPhone and I'm not sorry I bought it 4 month ago.
i just sold my 1st generation iphone (unlocked) for $373 on ebay the day after the announcement. People still want the 1st gen phones
Why do I have to read some smarmy insult to the author for almost every comment before I get to the meat of the response?
People, we are not stupid, we dont need someone else to tell us when a story is biased. Just leave a constructive comment and let the readers decide what is or isnt crap journalism.
David in cleaveland, do you understand anything that happens around you? I suppose being from cleaveland…
The most o2 customers will pay is £159 for 16gb on the £35 contract, (new customers are offered a £30 contract)
How much is an iPod touch? Thought so.
What phone do you have? A Nokia 3210? You just sit there and enjoy snake David.
Btw I posted this on an iPhone…
dave, being a gen 1.0 buyer is not as bad as you think, i'll upgrade and sell my v1.0 phone for more that the $200 i'll need to pay. yes there is still a market for unlocked gen1 iphones. hehehehhehe
David, why be a hater dude? Yes I enjoyed being cutting edge from Day One and I'll probably shell out the extra bucks for the enhanced speed. BTW, I didn't go into debt to pull the trigger the first go round and I'm lucky enough to have the means to give it another go. As an early adopter, I can assure the "Johnny-come-latelies" you will enjoy the experience of having everything in one device (unless you have super huge fingers). Kumbaya David from Cleveland!!
A different question: Can I move existing number from edge iphone to 3G iphone and then use the edge iphone on one of my other non iphone lines?
Thank you, thank you gen 1.0 buyers, hope you enjoyed being on the "cutting edge". Now, anti up another couple hundred to get the upgraded version. hahahahahahahahahahah

is it May of 2007 or 2008?
ex ped: 2008. There were no iPhones purchased before May 27, 2007.
