Its amazing that the tech industry has created another duality in the world – Good vs Evil, Light vs Dark, Horus vs Set, Repulican vs Democrat, Bloods vs Crips, and now PC vs Mac. It's all the same. Use what you got and shut up. Buying a piece of equipment designed for FUNCTIONALITY to gain the approval of others is hilarious.

I don't see anything positive in Apple moving forward. Windows 7 is getting great reviews, Ubuntu is catching on and Google is coming out with an OS which will surely cut into both Mac and Windows market share. The problem with this article is that it looks at past trends and attempts to make some sort of prediction based on these trends. But the future does not look so bright for Apple, Google's Android platform will soon flood the market with more affordable and more capable mobile phones. And Mac only accounts for 10% of computers worldwide which is a larger market that just the US. So lets look at the big picture and please don't let brand loyalty cloud your ability to be objective.

Apple got to be "cool" because it seeded the elementary and secondary schools with free computers in the 1980's under an initiative called A'pple Seed" and got special tax credits from a congressional approval for doing it.

Apple also is a price fixer. They tightly control their distribution to keep margins high. They quash anyone who tries to sue them for price fixing with their legions of lawyers.

They once told a person suing them.. "you spend a dollar, we spend ten dollar, who ever runs out of money first loses."

Apple sues everybody and has probably got lawyers more than designers to thanks for their "success."

The reason why Apple has done so well is its ability to differentiate itself from its competitors. People stood in lines in the freezing cold when the iPhone, iPod touch was launched. This halo effect has carreid over to Mac Computers. Mind you iTunes is the number one selling online music store. It is for this reason and being the cutting edge on innovation that Apple has been so successful at increasing its market share. Plus there are hunders, if not thousands of PC manufacturers so the competition is much more steep with PC. There is nothing to distinguish Gateway from Dell for instance. Low profit margins too.

Let's not kid ourselves. Apple can only grow so much because in reality it supplies a particular niche. The main reason why it took so many years before we had 1 billion PC users globally was that PCs were too expensive for the majority of people. A business model based on high markup will only pick up those who can afford it. Apple's not going to get very far by being the most expensive of the lot, because most people around the globe make PC purchases based on cost alone.

Yes, but let's get the facts straight.

"1. OSX is still a $300 copy of freeware"

OS X is proprietary software built on and open source core. You can download the core from apple for free and do with it what you like…

"2. You still can’t run 90% of the software out there without loading another operating system."

Flat out bs- there are equivalent programs, especially on intel macs (on PPC macs to) that will do anything you can do on a PC.

"3. As far as Linux platforms are concerned apple is still the weakest of the bunch."

OS X isn't Linux. It's built on BSD Unix, and again, its GUI is proprietary.

If you want to slam something, at least get the facts straight.

So it might be cheaper but you get what you pay for I guess.

Yes, when it comes down to it you can look at a few simple facts.

1. OSX is still a $300 copy of freeware

2. You still can’t run 90% of the software out there without loading another operating system.

3. As far as Linux platforms are concerned apple is still the weakest of the bunch.

So it might be cheaper but you get what you pay for I guess.
