this pseudo "gps" technology has been around for years. it is based on the same concepts as gps, but instead triangulation occurs between handset and cell towers as opposed to gps satellites…it is definately a handy feature, though not as accurate as real gps.

Your just hearing about it now because software vendors such as google have finally created user friendly mapping applications to leverage the technology.

All cell phones have this "pseudo" gps technology built in as long as the mapping applications are available

If you download the new google maps the Locate Me function already works.

I don't really understand the importance of GPS on my phone. I have one in my car but it's mainly for my wife, who has a terrible sense of direction. In my entire life I have never been lost. EVER. And if I were, I would just consider it an adventure. Am I missing something or are there a lot of directionally challenged people out there?

I used to run a hiking shop and I used GPS 15 or more years ago when all they did was Lat/Lon and UTM with 200 waypoints (no maps). I wasn't that useful to me then and it's not now.

I don't know how many people are wandering around lost because they don't have GPS but have to wonder if it will help them since they can't read a map anyway.

I hope people aren't using this feature on their phones while driving (and if walking how dumb are you, can't you read addresses?) because that's an accident waiting to happen. It's bad enough just talking on a cell phone.

Just like no FM receiver on iPod it gives something for tech nerds to gripe about but if it's something that use up my battery I hope I NEVER have a phone with GPS.

I recently converted to a Mac from Windows for home use. I also have an IPhone having replaced by old cell phone and Ipod. From my short time with Apple, have to say I notice a marked difference in software stability. Ironically, the only programs that have crashed my Mac have been MS Office 2004. I also attended the MIT Technology Review conference in Boston this past fall, and noticed most of the scientists at the conference used Mac'.
