They only way to safely backup your data is to an external device. Any backup to an internal drive partition or second internal drive is not any more secure than the original install.

One of the key advantages of the Apple hardware and operating systems for years has been the ability to boot from any external source by simply holding down the option key at startup. This is something that windows users cannot due without separate third party software. Having an external bootable copy of your drive is an affordable (plug and play drives with one touch backup are very easy - 250gb for under $100) way to really protect against data loss.

I can't wait for September 26... iMean October 26th! (see article title and above comments)

Time machine works seamlessly with the hard drives due to its rebuilt architecture. It sure will be something! ;)

External USB HDD's are cheap cheap cheap, and when connected to an Airport Extreme a USB HDD becomes in effect a cheap server or backup volume at minimal incremental cost.

Well, proof will be in the sales, but suffice it to say that, regardless of what Apple thinks are the top selling points, Time Machine is a *major* selling point for me w/ Leopard. External Hard drives are relatively cheaps these days, and while programs what back up to an external hard drive had been around for quite some time, I will gladly pay for one that's integrated seamlessly into the OS, and does it with the ease of use and stablity that Apple has become known for. That alone is worth the $129 to me. The other stuff is just gravy.

With the new airport extreme, the extra hard drive can be attached to the base station/router making time machine backs seamless.
