Apparently there is a service, www.brickmenow.com, that will "brick" your iPhone, iPod, Xbox, PSP, or other device on purpose.

Computer Hardware is built to run Computer Software. Computers are not purchased to look pretty, to 'dazzle' or to impress, but to make our lives easier. Prior to the events of the last three weeks (cutting prices, firmware updates, etc), the iPhone left me with the impression that Apple had finally done something right.

That said, now that I have witnessed Apple's heavy handed approach to third party software developers, and Jobs recent misstep with cutting the price of the device, I will certainly not consider the iPhone when making my next purchase.

I believe Apple has no choice but to lock the phone. The iPhone is a potential Trojan horse which could put ATT out of business. The danger for ATT is the WiFi chip in the iPhone. As more and more iPhones are sold, WiFi hot-spots will multiply. Eventually, people in cities will make all calls over the internet. The Cell Phone business will be wiped out. I look forward to that day.

Apple made it abundantly clear before the first iPhone was sold that they would not allow any third party software on the iPhone other then apps built around Safari.

Apple made it abundantly clear that they would not allow any unlocking of the iPhone before the first iPhone went on sale.

Maybe they didn't make themselves clear enough for the completely brain dead people out there.

Apple is doing exactly what they said they would do and somehow you are shocked by it.
