Huawei's stake in 3Com could raise security concerns
When does a Chinese company’s strategic technology investment become a national security risk?
Lawmakers were starting to ask that question Friday after 3Com, a struggling manufacturer of networking equipment, announced plans to sell itself to private equity firm Bain Capital Partners, and Chinese networking giant Huawei Technologies in a $2.2 billion cash deal.
Google adds video to its custom alerts
Want to be notified when the next embarrassing celebrity video hits the Web? Google’s (GOOG) on the case.
The search giant’s “Google Alerts” feature, which automatically notifies you when a subject appears online in news outlets, blogs or elsewhere, is now adding video to its arsenal, the company announced on its official blog. Users can choose to receive an e-mail when certain terms show up in a new video’s text description.
iPhone gets better at corporate e-mail
When Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone first came out, one of the early knocks on the device was that, straight out of the box, it doesn’t handle corporate e-mail well. It seems that situation is changing; I got a demonstration yesterday of a solution that looks pretty good. You can see it for yourself, in somewhat blurry fashion, in the video below.
At IDF, Intel talks about new chip for HDTV
Intel (INTC) CEO Paul Otellini said this week that the chip giant is working on a project due next year, called IA System on a Chip, that should bring more PC-like power to advanced set top boxes and high-definition TVs.
Apple OS X already boots on Intel's next-gen chip
Intel’s (INTC) next-generation Nehalem chip is already working with Apple’s (AAPL) Mac OS in tests, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said Tuesday.
During his keynote address at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Otellini said that Nehalem, due next year, will bring major performance improvements. With Otellini looking on, engineer Glenn Hinton demonstrated a system using Nehalem that was running Windows XP. A voice from the computer said, “Hello Paul; I am Nehalem. I am only three weeks old, and I am already talking.”

Google officially launches ads on phones
Google (GOOG) has officially launched AdSense for mobile, giving its network of advertisers access to the growing number of people who are browsing Internet content on cell phones.
The move is unlikely to have a big financial impact in the short term; the program is tailored to publishers that have cell phone-friendly versions of their sites, and there aren’t yet a whole lot of those.
But the move is still important because Google is, for the first time, directing piles of advertiser cash toward the mobile web. If publishers see that there’s real money to be made from building tailored mobile sites, there’s a greater chance that they will invest in developing mobile-only content.

Refresh this page for updates as the event progresses.
Intel (INTC) CEO Paul Otellini is giving the opening keynote at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, the chip giant’s biggest event of the year. Intel controls 75 percent of the global semiconductor market, but is in a pitched battle with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for the future of chips that sit at the heart of PCs, phones, servers and more.
Companies such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL) and Apple (AAPL) use these chips across their product lines, and they, along with the rest of the information technology industry, will be looking to Otellini for a roadmap to the future.

Live: Adobe Systems Q3 earnings call
Adobe Systems (ADBE) has reported Q3 earnings that blew past analyst expectations and the company’s own projections, based on unexpectedly strong sales of its Creative Suite and Acrobat products. Because Adobe is the first major technology company to report earnings during this cycle, executives sometimes offer insights into the technology buying patterns that affect larger players such as Apple (AAPL) and Intel (INTC).
