| (1/8) IN THIS CORNER. SanDisk (SNDK), the number-two maker of MP3 players, is rolling out its latest challenge to Apple (AAPL) and the iPod: The Sansa Clip, which goes head to head with the iPod shuffle. The Clip is available in September, in black, red, blue and pink. While the shuffle is still smaller and sleeker, the Clip has a tiny screen, a tiny price tag, and other features that could give the shuffle a run for its money. For details, read on …. |

Interesting how the comments show that the iPod is really a fashion statement more than it is an mp3 player. If you need an iPod to be 'in', then this is not for you. If you want a good player, an expandable memory player, an inexpensive player, or otherwise look for function over form, then the SanDisk line is the place to look. I have two SanDisk players and see no reason to own an iPod.
All you have to do to determine the success/failure of this product is look at it. It's ugly. The image of the ipod is what makes people want it. I can't picture myself ever dreaming of owning a sandisk player.
There were "uncountable" tiny mp3 players. Where are they now? Making the player smaller doesn't work out..

Looks like a repackaged Sansa Express. The UI shots, the features, the buttons, even the battery life are an exact match. It's just missing the microSD slot and the native USB connector in exchange for a smaller package, a clip, and a slightly lower price.
I have an Express, it's a slick little device. Some people would like it to support playlists, and I'd like its volume to go a little higher, but it's a very capable player. Adding a 2GB card gave me a 3GB player with a screen, FM tuner, voice recorder, and a host of other features missing from the 1GB Shuffle.
Even paying retail for the card and player, I've still saved a couple of bucks over the Shuffle, too.
