RAZR2: Motorola's comeback kid? Photos (1/5)

RAZR2
(1/5) Motorola (MOT) hopes to recapture the glory of the original RAZR – and regain some market share – with the launch of the RAZR2. The phone will be available within the next month through Verizon Wireless (VZ), AT&T (T), Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (DT), as well as Alltel and US Cellular. Unlike Apple's (AAPL) iPhone, the RAZR2 phone works on 3G networks. But will it be enough to gain on Nokia (NOK) and bring Moto back from the stock market doldrums?

The problem is that Motorola allows the cell phone companies to monkey with their phone's interface. The result is always a poorly thought through mess, that looses most of the "gee wiz" Motorola put into their designs. Motorola should only allow the cell phone companies to add features; unique features, but never, ever, take any away.

In contrast, ATT had to take the iPhone "as is". The iPhone sold by ATT is idential to the one sold directly by Apple.

Truthseeker… do you even know WTH your talking about?! AT&T ***HAS*** a true 3G network based on WCDMA called HSDPA. and it is available in select major cities. AND… its download speeds are slightly faster than EVDO which Verizon and Sprint uses. Wiki it. And for all you iPhone haters…check it out first. You either totally against it or not. But for what its generally used for, it is pretty sweet. Mot can pretty much top this phone, but I don't know why they wish not to?! am confused. True through…Mot is a true RF engineering outfit. compare voice quality of latest offerings from K1 and up… You will find that these phones are able to be heard in very noisy environment. Anyways, hoping and wishing that some of the coolness in MOT comes out soon. The strictness in quality is a double edged sword. MOT does not like to release bad phones these days BECAUSE of what it's learned passing out defective RAZRs

Karl, Have you even used an iPhone? I can type between 30-40 wpm without that keypad, which I'd argue is faster than you could on any phone you have. The fact that it has a virtual keypad means I don't have to depress buttons which actually saves time in the end. Battery change? The phone lasts for days under heavy usage. 3G? Wifi… and Edge isn't as slow as it's claimed to be.

This is related to the razr in name only. Completely different phone otherwise.

@feetfetishweirdo: that's funny, my v3xx is on AT&T. It's 3G and super fast. Google maps is as fast as on a DSL line. Does full html web browsing too. And it's not $600.

iPhone is over hyped. I love powerbooks, no doubt about it, and even have several Apple products. But sorry, the iPhone isn't all that.

The biggest problem with the original RAZR was that it was too wide. Now this one's wider?!? What the hell is Motorola thinking?!?

Ah well…it won't matter. Apple will simply come out with the iPhone Nano and destroy the remaining competition. BTW, to all those that dislike the fact that the iPhone is still a 2.5G phone, that's simply because of AT&T's lack of a true 3G network. But notice that Apple is about to release the 3G iPhone in Europe. Watch and see how well it sells then.

Wouldn't give that Apple toy to the janitor. Motorola knows more about phones than Apple knows about computers. I-phone: no keypad, check. No battery change, check. No 3G, check. What a ridciculous piece of junk.

Yeah.. that thing looks like the old RAZR… iPhone is cool.. but I am holding out for Google's gPhone :)

Weren't all those years of RPA-based workplace Darwinism supposed to 'evolve' Motorola into a company of super-achievers? Razr2, bah! Is this really ALL the creativity these ubermenschen can muster, the same old worn-out idea dressed in new clothes? Did all those years of grief and management-employee antagonism lead to just this?

nothing new here…blah blah blah!…the future is with Apple and it's iPhone…
